Share Your Videos / Re: CATS - ML .RAW 600D short.

Thanks for sharing your kitties in RAW video for 600D. Seeing the peeps shooting RAW on a 600D is awesome. I am in the middle of a huge project shooting h.264 so I dont know when I will get around to shooting a little raw short. If I do, I will share mine too. Never heard of VSCO. Why do you use it to grade? Is it a plugin or its own app? thanks

Good to know cam0110. Thanks for posting your issue and solution.

I have been avoiding shooting in raw due to post workflow. Based on your video I may consider doing a short raw project. Thanks for the video, explanation and inspiration to shoot raw on a 600D.

So I had to go look it up in my 600D manual. Says the same thing. Still images are impacted by a hot sensor but not video. There are two warning icons for heat. The first is a white icon and the second is a red icon. You should shut down cam if shooting stills and get the white icon warning. Video can be captured with a white warning icon. In either movie or still mode once the red icon warning is displayed that cam may shutdown by itself if the user does not shut it off. Obviously, Canon wrote this for h.264 and not raw.

Yes. The camera wont produce good images without light on the sensor. Light the scene in as creative a way as possible to keep the dim vibe real in post. Use contrasting dark and light areas of the scene and light it brighter than what you want as a final product and then begin to create that "dim room" in post. I think that lighting the scene well and as creatively as you can will be the best solution for reducing noise...maybe you can reduce ISO cuz you have more light. Keep your aperture as big as possible. Either way you have more light on the sensor. Your 5d3 video should look awesome if given enough light, and then post process for that church basement/ strip club look. Oh darnit....Now secretly wishing that when I go over to my bag I will find Canon elves have left me a 5d3 with a gift card for 10k$ of glass. Use as much light as you can to keep your sensor happy.

It is an interesting filter and the polarization factor is there, for obvious reasons. Just before full open there is a tiny little range that will make my digital TV screen content disappear while everything else looks the same so it looks like the TV is not on. I also did some experimentation with panning from dark to bright while giving the vari-nd an artistic and well timed twist and had some satisfactory results with keeping exposure levels at a suitable levels. Very similar to auto exposure on a camcorder without changing the ISO or aperture. I have not used on water or glass reflections but figure that there is polarization in play all the time with this filter, or at least when specific angles are set. Still thumbs up for this vari-nd. It also has potential for in camera fade to black/fade from black, which is something I did not think about previously.

I can't provide any insight for you on the Beachtek hardware. Get a nightly up and running and use the audio features. It may be all you need. Lack of funds requires that you work with what you have, right?  And ML is free, and audio features are free. Good luck.
#58
I dont think anything has really changed for 600D Audio since it was first implemented after v2.3 was released. The first usable Audio hacks were introduced via nightly builds for the 600D, so functionality should be stable for that portion of code. That being said, I dont use the Audio ML feature for my 600Ds, as I record audio thru an H4N.

Choose an April build. I was running apr30 recently. Nightlies for 600D have been failing in May. You can find out more about that in the nightly builds forum.

It looks great. Can you share what resolution you shot @ and what SD card? Also, I assume you had to uprez to 720p. What did you do? Thanks.

Great to hear when people get all giddy when a plan works out. Chuffed sounds like something bad to me, especially as a bean, but I guess I have been "chuffed" many, many times and just did not know it.

The sensor and camera will heat up with use. An "Overheated" sensor will increase noise in the recorded image/video. It is a temporary situation. I don't have any details about this subject only what i have read. I personally have never noticed this in my video but the camera does not stay on very long for most of my shoots.

So the initial verdict is a big winner. I purchased a 49mm Promaster HGX Variable ND for 99usd today. My Variable ND candidate lenses dont fall into the wide angle range so concerns raised by garry23 should not impact me. I am generally shooting wide angle indoors/set where an ND is not likely to be required. It appears to provide exactly what I need. Time will tell. I also bought a hoodman hood loupe, model ch32 @ 99usd. It is collapsible and has no direct way to attach to the cam and it designed to be held up for viewing purposes. I think they sell a rubber band as an accessory. I attached mine with a quick assemblage of three "street" rubber bands and BOOM!, all done. So the combo of the hoodman and the vari nd will improve my outdoor shoots for sure. I will be shooting this weekend outside so I am pumped to not squint to see my lcd, or try to (uselessly) cover with my hand, as well as, keeping that shirt/face/prop from blowing out. Thanks to everyone for their input. My 200$ investment should serve me well.

It does allow for follow focus, but one must use their fingers to push buttons while using that feature. Follow focus does not provide for in camera continuous focus during video. I will recommend that you read the user manual just like I did before I even installed ML initially. It will provide you with just about all the info you need about the capabilities of v2.3.

I am going to buy a Vari - ND today and run it thru its paces. If it does not perform to my satisfaction then I wont be using it and move on to normal ND filters. I totally appreciate the conversation around my question and the knowledge I have gained from asking it in this forum. I am also getting a screen hood to see what the hell I am composing and focusing in these bright day shoots. It would be cheaper to put a cardboard box on my head with a hole for the camera but then I might come off looking a bit silly probably.

QuoteWhen shooting RAW on my Mark III, I get a lot of noise when my ISO is above 1250 in a dimly lit room. Is this normal? Sometimes I see videos with very high ISOs without any noise. The music video will take place in a dimly lit room. Is there a setting to decrease this noise?

Post processing with denoiser either with the tools in After Effects or use a 3rd party denoiser like Neat Video can make significant improvements in visual noise. As stated by a1ex get light in there to reduce noise during shooting.

t3i with ML does not have autofocus capability in video?

That's right. ML does not provide any video autofocus capability beyond what Canon implemented for either camera.

@reddeercity - Thanks for the testimonial and the link. Video is the main work for my cams so I will definitely give the Promaster series a good looking over. I noticed that the link is to HGX series which seems to have additional coating properties and is slimmer. I looked up Promaster vari nd at my local Mike's Camers but they dont seem to carry the HGX series. The HGX series seems to be top notch. The line available here in retail are much cheaper but not branded HGX. Any opinions on non HGX series quality? I may just give them a call to discuss.

edit: I did call and they have digital HGX variables for 49mm (52mm and 55mm)  thru 58mm, priced at 99usd to 120usd. Too bad I need 4 of them. Thanks for the info guys. I will likely start out with the 49mm since those are my fastest primes, which are OM lenses. I may buy a cheaper one to see how it performs on my canon lenses. It will be great to have more control of that pesky but critical sunlight.

General Help Q&A / Re: Image Flicker
June 02, 2014, 08:24:48 PM
I am running v2.3 on my 2 600Ds currently and I dont have this issue.  Re-install per instructions and make sure you clear all cam settings in Canon Menu, and re-update Canon firmware. Then do ML install. There is no feature in v2.3 that should make your cam produce this weird exposure during video and if it was a bug there would be many people complaining about it. Archive the video and images from your card and reformat before you install. It should work.

General Chat / Variable ND filters

Anyone have experience with variable neutral density filters? Sunny days are killing my brights. even at 100 ISO. I am trying to decide whether I go with sets of fixed density or variable. Variable sounds great, less filters to buy, less filters to carry and less fiddling with the cam to deal with super bright days. I need several sizes to cover my glass collection so I am leaning towards variable but would like any input about caveats or other aspects I should consider before I buy variable ND filters. Thanks.

The 600d is a great camera. I have two. I think the t5i has full time autofocus in video mode. Pull up the specs for each model and do the comparison and see which one fits what you need. They are both nice cams for still and video in that price range.

That definitely helps a1ex. Kudos for your immediate response.

I'm looking for some nightly builds for January 2014 back thru July of 2013. I could only go back to February 2014 in nightly" show older builds". I want to do some testing with my 600d. Surely some of you folks have builds from those time periods. If you have any nightly builds send me a pm and I will try to compile a group for  testing  between v2.3 and whenever we get a working nightly for 600d. Thanks for your help.
