I wonder if we can accomplish something similar to what Neat video does using a process similar to dark frame subtraction? If the user can identify an area of pure noise, could that be tiled and extracted from the base image?

For the hell of it, I shot a low light raw clip on my 5d2 at iso 6400. After white balancing in MLV App and denoising in neat it actually looked great. I know this might be apples and oranges, but I really wasn't able to get something comparable in MLVApp yet.

Everything seemed normal! - besides what you mentioned.

This time my camera did reproduce the issue where it wouldn't stop. Found a temporary fix for that.

src/raw.c
static void raw_lv_disable()
{
// ASSERT(!lv_raw_gain); // dfort - 7D cannot stop recording if this is enabled
    lv_raw_enabled = 0;
    raw_info.buffer = 0;

This issue was still occurring for me on your latest test build - I'm assuming this code was included? This issue does not occur on reddeercity's Feb01 build.

I don't think anyone is trying to minimize your efforts - I'm very excited by everything you've added to the 5d2, and I'd hate to see development stall!

Could you explain the pros or cons between crop_rec_4k_mlv_snd /crop_rec_4k_5D2 in your opinion? When I added your crop_rec to crop_rec_4k_mlv_snd it was very stable and capable of all the same great stuff.

My understanding is that crop_rec_4k_mlv_snd more closely resembles development on other cameras and thus will be easier to keep the 5d2 up to date moving forward? It would be a shame if all your hard work was the last act for this legendary camera.

Now on the 5D2 I'm interested if the crop_rec module is working, it is from waza57's crop_rec_4k_5D2 branch. If it does work it would be interesting to see if reddeercity's crop_rec module works in this build.

I am getting a Raw Detect Error with 3.5k 5x mode on Crop_Rec. When adjusting values in the menu, at first it acted like it was in the 1920 1:1 mode, with 1984 as the max H resolution - after some bumbling around the menu now it expects to be able to get up to 2880x1080 - and I recorded a few seconds with accurate framing in liveview but frozen during recording. The black level is totally off in the clip, but it seems to be valid 2880 x 1080. (Uploaded the MLV here, M22-1357.MLV: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1vfodz-Dsk8T0NppBxFIQaCt59NSDEyZP)

And then, randomly, it now gives me a Raw Detect error again and I can get it to record again.

1920 1:1 works fine, with accurate framing until you press record. 12 bit has slightly incorrect black level, green tinted shadows.

Generally this build runs a little slow - the UI is slightly unresponsive here and there.

EDIT:

It does. And much better. Adding the crop_rec module from reddeercity's magiclantern-crop_rec-3k-1080p-5D2-eXperimental.2019Feb01.5D2212 to magiclantern-crop_rec_4k_mlv_snd_experiments_waza57.2019Mar21.5D2212 works like a charm.

Max resolution in crop_rec 3.5k 5x mode is 3008 x 1080. All bit depths work. Will keep messing around a little more.

Notes:
Sound Recording works, but after stopping recording the camera is stuck at "Stopping" for a long time - requires a restart but no battery pull necessary.

Is there a raw_twk module I could be trying on 5d2? MLV_PLAY hasn't worked for a long time with any of these 3k 5x builds, and the raw_twk I tried adding just gave me an oldAPI error.

Can we expect to see a build to test soon? Are there any specific kinks you're still working out?
#32
How large is the crop factor? I love the high resolution 5x stuff but the closer we can get to full frame with higher rez is obviously desirable.

Darn it -- thought I was onto something that would work with the 500D/550D by using RscMgr memory but no such luck. Sorry for the false hope.

Not sure why 10/12-bit isn't working properly on these cameras yet. Seems to me that it should be possible.

It seems to be at the same point that the 5D2 was at a few years ago - 10/12bit was working in 5x mode but not 1:1. I'm still not sure what the most stable version of 10/12 bit is for the 5d2 but maybe the progress there will provide a clue.

Aha! I hadn't tried it in 5x mode - everything works! Either module and at any bit depth. Here's an example of a 10bit file in 5x mode:

Tried MLV_Lite and MLV_REC at all bit depths - nothing worked. Just rapidly alternating black and white frames with some purple and pink corrupted lines. Here are some examples:

Eager to test this out! Fantastic work!

5d2 is great, but with some drawbacks.

1080p isn't possible, but 1856 x 10?? is close enough, and still far superior to 8-bit compressed 1080p. You can exceed 1080p at 5x zoom in a standard nightly build, and the recent experiments with crop_rec have led to roughly 3k at 5x zoom.

Out of all of these modes, the standard MLV_REC at nearly 1080p is great, and with bit reduction and a fast CF card you can get continuous recording. I haven't checked a nightly in a while - not sure if bit reduction is standard or still more experimental.

That said, and maybe it's just my 5d2, I get serious vertical line noise even with RAW. The sensor on the 5d2 is highly susceptible to this kind of pattern noise. Maybe it's a symptom of age or overuse, but the image starts to fall apart at 800 ISO. That, and moire becomes pretty bad and more noticeable when you're shooting raw.

The fact that you can get a full frame camera that's excellent at stills and can do 1080'ish raw for like $500 is still pretty amazing.

Hey! Nice video!

I will say though - I think every single shot in your video needs to be brought down 1 or 2 EV. The whites are so hot it's almost hard to look at - and you're essentially desaturating your shots they're so bright.
#39
Curious about 30 fps in the Canon menu - why is this necessary? I tried it today with 24 and 30 and didn't notice any difference in my results.
#40
My tests went well! I had one freeze/battery pull but it happened when I was bumping my camera around a lot getting it onto a tripod shoe so I'm not exactly sure what caused it.

I was surprised at how long I could record with my Lexar 1066x. The icon was red but it just kept going. I got to 2 minutes before eventually stopping it myself.

Raw Video / Re: Before I give up on ML raw video ...
January 05, 2019, 02:36:26 AM
While we're making some helpful critiques, I'd like to offer my own. In the video, the difference between your landscape and more artsy transition versus people mugging for the camera makes the final product kinda confused. Vacation style video of people tends to drain the artistry out of it for everyone except the subjects themselves, maybe.

Everybody is frustrated with youtube compression, unfortunately I don't think there's a good way around it. But yeah, I don't see how starting with uncompressed raw footage would in any way hinder your final project.

If you're sick of your 5D3 I'll gladly take it :0

Oh, and your "comparison" link is the same as the first one - curious to see which video you were looking at for comparison.

Very expressive, very cool! Would be interested to hear your thoughts on speed ramping/transition effects - you use them very effectively!

What frame rate and resolutions were you shooting?

Great stuff!

General Chat / Re: Panasonic GH5 or Canon 5D Mark III?

Ok--so both cameras can exceed HD resolution, is that important for you? I'll tell you a dirty little insider secret, many productions are still shot and mastered in 1920x1080. About a year ago I was considering drinking the GH5 Kool-Aid so I signed up for a local workshop with Panasonic GH5 guru Griffin Hammond. Guess what, he doesn't shoot in 4k either. So which camera has a better looking HD image? No doubt, 5D3 raw video.

Griffin is the best! Such an incredibly nice guy who does great work. He and my brother go way back so I've talked to him a few times. His advice for me was just to be super nice and do good work which I find to be a good grounding principle. :)

General Help Q&A / Re: Magic Lantern's LV DIGIC Peaking
November 01, 2018, 05:33:56 AM
Honestly, I'm pretty new to neat, and I don't think this is an ideal solution whatsoever but it may eliminate the really noticeable flickery look on the silver portions. While building the noise profile, try sampling from just these areas.

I hope it helps, but I don't want to get your hopes up. If you send me the files I'd be willing to try with my recently purchased copy of neat.

I know it's not an attractive solution, but assuming you're in a tight spot, I would try something like Neat noise removal to at least diminish those harsh spots.

Nothing too fancy, but I really enjoyed being able to walk around with a just 50mm and zoom in for some detail. I do regret, however, that I forgot that the standard full-frame mode doesn't work on that build so only half my shots turned out!

Anyway, check it out!

I get it! I'm a linux n00b so a lot of basic stuff goes over my head.

Looking around a bit, it seems someone solved a similar issue by launching their program with something like
GDK_BACKEND=x11 ~/Switch/bin/Switch_MAIN.sh

This fixed the error I was having, I was prompted to pick a file like before, but then pretty much the same stuff followed. I'm only pasting a few lines because it goes on for a while:
ls: cannot access '*.MLV': No such file or directory
ls: cannot access '*.mlv': No such file or directory
/home/username/Switch/bin/Switch_MAIN.sh: line 80: /home/username/Switch/bin/mlv_dump: Permission denied
ls: cannot access '*.MLV': No such file or directory
ls: cannot access '*.mlv': No such file or directory
/home/username/Switch/bin/Switch_MAIN.sh: line 85: /home/username/Switch/bin/mlv_dump: Permission denied

Appreciate any ideas anyone may have.

I'm trying to run Switch in ChromeOS as a Linux container. I'm running into this error:

(yad:708): Gdk-WARNING **: /build/gtk+3.0-NmdvYo/gtk+3.0-3.22.11/./gdk/x11/gdkwindow-x11.c:5573 drawable is not a native X11 window

It successfully opens up a file-picker, but I just get a long list of "No such file or directory"s

Any thoughts? Would appreciate any help. Getting this running smoothly in a container would make my life on the go so much easier.

All these days lurking have finally paid off! Thanks for your hard work keeping the dream alive reddeercity, waza, a1ex, and greg!

For those of you who are a little worried the workflow is beyond your depth, it's not hard at all.
Here's what I did:

A: Downloaded magiclantern-Nightly.2018Sep02.5D2212.zip from waza: https://bitbucket.org/waza57/magic-lantern/downloads/

B: Deleted the files on my card, copied the build files over, and went through the installation process.

C: Loaded the modules adtg_gui / crop_rec / mlv_rec & rebooted.

D: Enabled Crop mode in the Movie menu, and selected 3.5k 1:1 centered x5.

E: Enabled Raw video (MLV), went to liveview, and pressed the zoom button once to enter 5x mode.

F: Entered settings on the Raw video module and scaled my resolution up to 2880 x 1080.

G: Set my bit depth to 10bit and pressed record!
