Raw Video / Re: More noise than usual? (recent build)
September 01, 2014, 10:17:03 PM
Yes, I am aware that this is not a great comparison (as I stated). But I think its quite clear that the top shot suffers from colored noise. I greatly respect those that have the time to do studio tests and proper troubleshoots, this was an attempt to report a problem I know is there. Theres more noise in this build/firmware (Aug 7, 1.2.3, 5dmrk3). I did a second test with GD off, raw_rec instead of mlv_rec and no monitor. Same noisepattern showing.

Thanks for all the great work the developers do around here!

I am also noticing noise in middle/gray areas of the frame at 800 ISO. Ive added two screengrabs from davinci, not the best for actual comparison, but its easy to spot the noise int the 1.2.3 aug 7. build (first picture). Second picture is an old 1.1.3 build.

Only thing I am doing differently, is that I have mirroring ON, using the monitor as a clean frame and having GD on the back of the camera. Turning it off during the next test.

I just installed nightly from march the 15th, and shot through 6x 64 GB Komputerbay 64 GB (two different batches) and 2x Lexar 64GB
Firmware 113
HDMi monitor connected
raw_rec module, not mlv_rec
Global Draw off when recording

I put the DNG through Resolve and outputted Proreses that I watched. Did not see any colou-strips frames. I really believe this to be connected to Global Draw. I might also have been corrected in the nightlies, since my latest install was from November I think.

Since Global Draw doesnt overlay correctly on HDMI out (it "enters" the actual frame, making it difficult to frame correctly) I want it gone on recording anyway. But there is still (?) no way of making GD kill itself upon recording. I saw this feature beeing enabled in mlv_rec, but I am staying on raw_rec for this next shoot at least. Or have I missed something?

Yes, it´s time consuming, but not THAT time consuming if you know where to cut corners.

Take 5 minutes to read my article .. to my knowledge that´s the fastest way to batch process DNG sequences in After Effects, at least for the moment:

wow. Thank you so much for this article! Ive been looking for a great non-dng workflow, and this is it. Thanks!

There is no module for that, what he means is that it also works with .mlv recording.

I think you press Q under your Global Draw settings and you can access the various settings which should allow you to set it as enabled only during preview mode and not under recording.

I cant really get this to work the way I want. Quickreview is only displaying the rec indicator upon recording, nothing else. Liveview mode is not different from "ON.all modes" as I see it. Any tips? I found somewhere to clear overlays upon recording, but that just gives me a clean 3:2 frame when recording.

Thanks

On mine there is. MLV_REC has it too I think.

Hmm. You mean there's a module for this function? Could you please share how you make globaldraw hide on rec?

Raw Video Postprocessing / Speeding up ACR workflow
November 29, 2013, 02:15:34 PM
Hi guys (and gals?)

Been working with Resolve to output ProRes from my DNGs on some projects now, and quite happy with that. I think its the most speedy way of doing this as of now.

You people doing the ACR workflow, are you actually transcoding several shooting days like this? I might have missed some automation steps, but you are opening every shot in AFX with ACR import manually and then adding all the comps to AFX prores render? Its sooooo time consuming, right? What am I missing?

BUMP! Yes, this really would be an amazing setup. Lets face it, even with audio working again on RAW, its not hi-fi going on inside the DSLRs. External sound is still the better option

I believe it's caused by our incomplete understanding on how EDMAC works. I don't think it has anything to do with the card.

Lowering CPU usage might help (for example, turn off GlobalDraw).

Is there a way to let Globaldraw kill itself upon pushing rec? I really need it before, but not really during recording.

I've been using the latest nightly builds for the 5D3 and had this happen to me a couple times. Have not isolated why yet...

Interesting. What type of cards are you on?

5D Mark II is Fat32 system, it can not work with exfat!
That why the file are in 4GB spanning.
I never test my cards with benchmark test,
Start at smaller frame size full card then
Keep moving up on frame size until you the
Size you want.
Some times you need to brake in the card.
I had to do this on my 64GB Lexar 1000x .
There is no other way to record raw on
5d2. If you do not want spanning file
Then stop before the 4GB mark :)
Forgot to mention I am on 5dmrk3 where exFAT works beautifully. But will keep your tip in mind :)

I had this problem once on my 5D mark ii, back in July
I recommend that you use the Oct 24 built from A.D. Hack built for the 5D2
https://bitbucket.org/a_d_/laboratory/downloads/af9a60fe144d.zip
This one is the Best built to date and completely  Stable for Paid Work.
Plus I always Format my card in Camera before I shot raw, every time.
and use raw2cdng to extract.
Use Lexar 1000x 32,64 GB Max. size 1872x1250 23.976p for about 800 to 1000 frames
also Sandisk 90MB/s at lower frame size(1872x936 @23.976p ;)

Edit: I noticed that in ACR, the dng is set to 8bit, change that to 16bit in advance pulldown menu.

So youre not using exFAT formatting on the card? The camera formatting will make it FAT, right? Its a big one for me to have non-split files. If the problem is related to write speed as someone mentioned, Im still thinking its a card issue. What is peoples go to method for card testing outside of the benchmark function? Just shoot a card full, and speed through it in Resolve etc?

Ok, thanks.  But is it possible this is a "bad sector" on a cf card? I would think the entire recording would stop if that was the case..right? Always nice to narrow down the causes..

How about trying a more recent Nightly build.... you guys are running builds that are almost or over a month old. Things move fast around here.

Sure, will do. But do people using this for work actually use the very latest nightly build at any given time? I would think you stick to the ones that works safely..?

I saw the same stripes on some of my footage the other day. Have a 5dmrk3 on a late october build. Have used ML raw on four different small docus lately, and this one shooting day is the only one that has the stripes. Anyone know how to avoid it?

How do you "reinstall" ML? Just put a new version on the SD card, or do a new bootflag or something?

EDIT: This was on a new batch of KB64 cards. They otherwise perform great (no indication that anything is off). Could this be CF cards related?

I have 4 KB 64GB which work great. Used them both for 1DC 4K and ML Raw. Just ordered 4 new ones. Havnt benchmarked them, but will try that to see how they perform in theory.

The biggest contributor to heat is the display screen. Perhaps lowering the brightness might help, or even better using an external EVF monitor which would cause the internal one to turn off.

I saw it rise to 53C yesterday after perhaps 10 minutes use and standby. This was with external LCD connected. The room had alot of lights (food packshot) but it wasnt that hot actually. 3 minutes of downtime cooled it down to 47, and I kept rolling. Is there an onboard temperature shutoff function?

In other news. I brought the packshot to a pro grader in a Davinci suite. He could not believe his eyes. It mimiced RED Epics cleanness in many ways, he said. And we tried a skintone key, which was "through the roof". Exciting times!

What is the considered safe working temperature for 5dmrk3? And how do people manage temperature issues, what is quickest with regards to cooling etc.
Thanks!

Some questions regarding CF Cards and black&white focuszoom

1. Have several Komputerbay 64 gb cards, formated on my Mac as exFAT. They all work great, except the first couple of files, that will linger at writespeeds around 72 MB/s. The third file will get write speed at 90mb+. Is this to be expected, or is there any way to avoid it?

2. When a card has been transfered to my mac, I just delete the files from the card and I dont do in-camera formating (to keep the exfat structure). Does this method create issues down the road (messy file structures on-card). How do people maintain their exFAT formatting over time?

3. Why is the first step of focus magnification black&white? It's also pixelated and much harder to judge focus on. Is there any way to use the standard magnification? (5dmrk3)

No you're right, the Resolve workflow is much quick but the debayer quality is much better with ACR.

Youre basicly saying that afx exported video should be sharper than Resolve video? That would be a Magic Lantern-related issue then? I mean, people are using Resolve to export feature films after grading, so I would be shocked if AFX is better at it in all cases.
#21
Thanks for input, starting to manage the workflow a bit better now.

But for quick turnaround shoots, im starting to favor putting the dngs out through Resolve, making them log and applying suitable LUTs. Then export (very quickly) to punchy and saturated prores 422 almost ready for edit/ delivery. Got to underexpose a bit in cam, and not right for all shoots.  The deliver stage in resolve is so much less click and time-consuming than afx. Or am I missing something?

1. 1/48 is what Canon cameras can do, ML setting appears as 50 but I'm pretty sure it's just 48 in reality.

2. Your DNG don't have any metadata from the camera, so the white balance value is whatever the app you're using defaults to. You need to set it manually.

Thank you very much for quick response. Are people experiencing any flickr in PAL/25p land with ML video at 1/48. Should be a problem I guess..

Hi! Thanks for a great community!
To questions

1. Why is my overlay shutterspeed saying 1/48 whilst my ML menu is saying 1/50 +180 degree. I need 1/50 so which is the correct one?
2. All my dng/raw files are reporting to have been shot at 5500 kelving whitebalance, even though I set it differently in ML Menues. How can I change this?

Thanks!

Hi!

What exact workflow do people use when they load their footage into after effects, for premiere editing. Export file by file to prores4444 (send to render
Or add all files to a comp (merging files) and export to prores or other format that way?

Im using the Premiere Pro CC and afx, but this verison that the cloud gave me doesnt seem to support DNG natively (as advertised..:/
