In After Effects / Photoshop / OSX Preview...

I've tested 1920x960 50p 14 bits lossless, convert the .mlv file with mlv_dump, all .dng are black for the moment, don't know why. I had no error message during the recording and stopped it myself.
I've also tried 4K at 24p, but I haven't found the way to get the 4096 x 1440 ratio it is written everywhere?
In 4K, preview isn't working, right?

Thanks and many thanks to all the team which is doing so much work to fill the gap Canon has let behind.
I'm currently finishing my second short with the help of Magic Lantern and it is great to be able to get such video quality!

Sorry don't be pissed at me, but what is the best solution to convert 14 bits lossless .mlv files?
I've red we can use cr2hdr.app_4K, but i don't seem to find a link to it, only the cr2hdr.app version. Is this application compatible with all the .mlv flavours?
Is there better way to do so? I've always used MLVMystic which is simple and elegant to use...

Thanks,

S/.

Thanks for the answer and the search tutorial ;)
That was fast, I have missed that.

Hello,

I've just downloaded the last nightly build for my 5DMKIII - 1.1.3 firmware.
All MLV modules are loaded, but I don't seem to have all the options I see in the forum for the sound.
Here I just can select the sound recording frequency, the beep and the play volume.
How can I access to all the sound parameters as digital gain, input source, ...
I have made a search but can't find the answer.

Thanks for any help on this.

OK, I won't explain everything sorry. This is exactly what I was looking for when I have imagine this piece.
Some people get it as I have think about it, some people don't. No problem. It isn't smart vs dumb. Like in all arts if it speaks to you, fine.
I like the way this short disturbs people. These events have troubled me a lot. All the pieces are here.

Thanks a lot,

Thanks for sharing this. I like the mood of the piece. Very well grade too.
Could you share with us your workflow on the shots as all appear to be slow motions.
How do you archieve that? Fps? Resolution...

Thanks,

Sorry to interrupt ;-)
It is really nice to watch people exchange some thoughts about a piece I have done. Really interesting.
As for the part 're-living the fact that 9/11 killed her lover' it is, for me, more complex than that... It is not about memory.

Thanks for the infos, I will definitely check Cinelog-C.
I have tried MLVFS at the beginning of its development. Sounds really cool to gain space and prevent the converting stage but you still need ProRes for the edit right?
Or is MLVFS+AE really fast to edit in this format?

Some technical infos:
All has been shot in RAW with ML at 24p, 1920x960 for the most part to have some room to reframe in the 2.35 format.
Extreme close-ups have been shot at 2240x954 in crop mode.
I don't remember the parameters for the slow motions, but I had to do a vertical scale to find the good aspect ratio.

My workflow has been:
MLV -> MLVMystic -> CinemaDNG -> AE -> ProRes422Proxy
I've used the ProRes for the edit and linked the ProRes files to the CinemaDNG for all the grading.
I've used LUTs found on the web as a base, then used Colorista to fine tune things, with some of the regular AE filters.

I've spent so much time on the grading as the light was far from perfect on set.
There are lots of invisible vfxs too, to correct the much I have been able to do in the time I had, so working inside AE was easy to do these tricks.

Thanks for the comments guys!

Happy ML!

Hello ML nerds! I'm proud to share with you my first short film LIPSTICK.
Filmed on Canon 5DMKIII with Magic Lantern of course and all in RAW mode.
All the short has been edited, vfxed and graded inside After Effects by myself.
It has already been nominated by VOTD and selected by FilmShortage.

So here it is:

General Chat / Prepare H264 to be played by 5DMKIII...
December 28, 2015, 09:36:32 AM
Hello, here is a strange but interesting question...
Is it possible to prepare H264 movie files from AE or Premiere to be played inside a 5DMKIII in order to use the camera as a player (for TV output for example)?
Make movie files as if they were shot by the 5D to fool it.

Thanks,

S/.

Hello,

I use ML primary for the video part which brings incredible quality to my shooting needs (all what Canon hasn't given me due to protection purposes). But the workflow asks more steps, so we have to find ways to simplify them. I've tried to use raw2dng first but the lack of a simple UI made me choose Mystic over it (which is really great, simple, all I need is there). As I have understood Mystic is no longer in development because of parts of ML code used. So I was planning to buy RawMagic instead (I've tried to use the last raw2dng but my MLV files weren't recognized). As I have red the forum, RawMagic seems not to be a good choice now because it doesn't support all a1ex and other coders' work. I encourage all people to do the same until licence issues have been clarified. They clearly not coding ML to make profit but I can understand the frustration to see others take their work to make some. So, for me, a paypal account would be a good and natural thing to support the work (we all have paypal accounts but bitcoins is more under the hood). Just my two cents to ask a1ex not to stop the video part development, we need it to continue to express our passion.

ML is free and free is great but it is as fragile as liberty so we as a community must be vigilant to support all efforts done.

Thanks ML!

Modules Development / Re: MLV PLAY (mlv_play.mo)
August 25, 2014, 05:23:07 PM
Thanks for all the hard work. The MLV Player addition is great for ML workflow!
Would it be possible  to add a loop function? I find difficult to play a particular clip again and again to check if all is OK.
You have to go to the one before, then go back to play it again. If several clips are almost the same, you are lost in no time.
The loop function could be automatically set to loop at the end of one clip or perhaps a loop button to restart the clip each time you press it?

If there is a simple way to do that please tell me I've missed something?

Regards,

Raw Video Postprocessing / Re: ProRes 4444 XQ
July 12, 2014, 11:31:21 AM
I'm certainly not an expert, but I'm not a dumb either. Why people are so inclined to go for a rant!
I don't need alphas for ML (but certainly for other works I'm doing), but as Danne mentioned, Apple is saying the new ProRes XQ codec is better than the standard one in data rate and dynamic ranges. As I have said, the RAW workflow is slower than what BlackMagic and others are proposing in their cameras.
I don't use Resolve for the moment, only After Effects and this new codec seems a very interesting path for me to stock my files after importing them with ACR and use them in AE with faster interactions. That's just what I hope.

I don't know if it is better but, for me, if it works as expected, it will be the answer.
RAW files are huge to keep, sloooow to proceed and I never really liked movie files in image separated manner.
The new codec is far better than the "standard" 4444 ProRes with bigger files so more quality and latitude to grade.
And it will surely react a lot better in all Adobe products like After Effects than DNG ones.

Woooh thanks, I will test that as soon as possible. If this works it is a very good news for RAW workflow!

So FinalCut demo is the only way to get that new codec? And we can't access it from QuickTime?
Thank you so much Apple to continue to make our life more difficult ;-)
Have someone made more tests with this?

Thanks,

I had similar troubles not to be able to delete a file after viewed it from the MLVPlayer.
Second bug, File Manager never print the real file weight when the file is too big (more than 10GB).

Thanks,

k, thanks I will stay with 1.1.3 for the moment.
This forum is so huge it is difficult to trace the good informations.

S.

Question for a1ex: is there a reason to stay on 1.1.3 firmware for ML? Are there some 1.2.3 limitations? Lost speed? Still more bugs to trace than in 1.1.3? Anything to know?
Thanks,

S.

I've red all the topics but I'm not sure to have all well understood.
To resume, there is no way to have the image not stretched when you record 48, 50, or 60fps?
You can choose any aspect ratio combined to any resolution, you will still have to unstretch the image in AE?
Or have I missed something?
My concern isn't in the quality loss but more in the stretched grain which tends to make visible patterns to appear.

Thanks,

S.
