Hi

I am new around here. I have read a lot of the benefits that ML brings to its users, until I found that there was a version that could be used in the Rebel T4i, so I decided to give it a shot and find out how it works on mi camera. The result is that I busted my SD card 

I did everything you recommended to do:
•   I up dated the firmware to 1.0.4
•   I did a low level format to the SD card

Then I dounloaded the EOScard from the website: http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/EOScard but didn't work, I started to look for another software that make the SD card bootable, so I googled it an found this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CovIqmKODzg

After viewing that video I downloaded the WIN32 DiskImager and I also had to download the 2014-01-07-wheezy-raspbian that was needed to make the SD card bootable.

I used my SanDisk Ultra 64GB (SDXC I) to make it bootable and to upload the ML the result was the following:

I could upload the ML (magiclantern-v2.3.NEXT.2013Aug03.650D104), it even run perfectly. But the SDcard memory got shorten; it now says that its capacity  is about 56MB; I formatted it, I lost what I did when uploading ML; and the SDcard it is now 56MB of memory free (I can take up to 6 pictures).

I got worried about the camera, and checked it, and everything seems to work perfectly, but the SD card is busted.

MY question:

-   What did I do wrong?
-   Was it wrong to use de WIN32 DisImager?
-   Have I just lost my SDcard forever? Or can I fix it and make it 64GB again?
-   If it's definitely broken, what SD card can you recommend?
-   If I did any step wrong, could you teach me how make it right?

Hi,

First right click my computer on the desktop and click "Manage". Now the Computer Management window should be appeared. You'll see some options at the right panel. Under the storage option, go to Disk Management. There you will see your SD card. Please describe what you see there, what does it say about your card?

Just swapped my 50mm f/1.8 II backup lens for a 18-55mm IS II lens online. This is gonna be my first zoom lens with stabilisation. I always used primes without stabilisation before. Going to do timelapse in a week or so. Will post results

1600 iso seemed kind of too high to me. I'm very sure that'll produce very grainy images at night.

What about keeping iso as low as possible and cranking up the exposure time before trails? Wouldn't that be enough to see stars?

Well, if I end up using 1600 iso, i guess i'll use my trusty Neat video and Neat Image noise remover.

QuoteIf that's the effect you are going for then fine, but maybe you should consider a touch less wide with something like the rokinin 14mm?

Well, i don't have the cash unfortunately. Unless you're gonna send me yours for free :P

Great, thanks everyone for wonderful advices and suggestions.

dmilligan, I'd like to ask one thing about lenses though. If 30mm on cropped camera like my 650D isn't gonna be wide enough for astrophotography, then is it a wise to go for a cheap Canon kit lens (such as 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6)?

I was browsing the online stores and came across few fisheye lenses which also has a minumum f/3.5 aperture.  So in terms of minimum aperture the kit lens and fisheye lenses are the same. 8mm Rokinon f/3.5 is a good example and it costs around 250-300 bucks. But a 18-55mm kit lens only cost around hundred bucks. I can have wide angle for cheap!

I don't have much cash to spend on glass you know and all i have with me is this 30mm Sigma f1.4.

Thanks

Thanks.

I have Sigma 30mm f1.4. Do you think my lens is wide enough to capture the night sky?

Hey guys,

I'm kind of an semi-experienced video shooter but a beginner in terms of photography. So please bear with me. I have found a very good corner of nature for timelapse videos. No residential areas around and no light pollution! So I would like to know more about timelapse shooting at night sky.

First of all, how can I do it in post production? The camera takes pictures in certain time intervals, yeah i get it. But how can i get these pictures together in Premiere Pro to make a fluid movie? That's the part i don't understand.

Secondly what are the safe values for astrophotography? The highest iso i can set, right exposure settings etc...

Edit: There also people who shoot HDR timelapse. How do you do it?

Is there anything else I should know?

Audio Features YAY! I'm so happy! Love you guys!

Yea, you likely won't have wav or raw+wav as using those functions freezes EOSM and so likely 650D. But headphones/audio controls will work.

Umm that's sad to hear, especially for those who shot raw on their 650Ds. My SD cards aren't enough for RAW and even if I had fast cards, 650D can capture maximum 720p RAW anyway...

For me (and I guess for most people) the key feature is audio monitoring. As I mostly go out to run and gun, I would really like to know whether wind is ruining my audio or not.

What about the wav recording only? Is it working on EOSM?

I have also problem with temperature over 50°C using ML 2014-01-03 02:55:09

So what? I've seen mine go over 54°C as I was vlogging. Nothing's burnt.

Maybe you'll be able to 1:1 port it when I do EOSM.

Yes, I could do it gladly. Just let me know.

General Help Q&A / Overriding 59,94 FPS barrier @ 720p
January 03, 2014, 09:12:57 PM
650D user here,

I know the FPS override feature is not for slow motion, and I'm not asking things like 120FPS or something. Since I know I can't get that much frame rates from 650D, i'm slowing down my footage using Twixtor/After Effects. But when using Twixtor, every bit of extra FPS is helpful. So I was playing around with FPS override feature today just to squeeze extra few FPS out of my little 650D. But no matter what I did actual FPS didn't go over 59,94. Is there a way to set FPS at 65 frames? or 64,63,62 ? :-)

By the way, here's a video of mine shot @ 60 FPS and 720p on 650D and then slowed down via Twixtor.

Exactly! I hope that in 2014 this option is available or 650D is the list of supported cameras ..

But the main thing, we already have 80% of ML now available for 650D, and both I and all those who use the alpha we wanted to know a percentage or all that remains to be implemented, some being released by this developer alpha.

Thanks ...

Couldn't agree more. Need moar 650D implementations...!

Yes a graphical display of the recorded volume or audio output trough USB as on the 550D would be the last features I would love to have.

A fix for a flickering Magic Zoom would be awesome. It says only solution is to hardlock the UI. But i yet find out how to do that. And it flickers so bad.

Love ML

Does anyone know if Audio Functions will ever be available or if anybody is working on the development of this?

Thanks

M

Hey mate,

Same question asked here many times by me but devs apparently don't like such questions and categorize them as "troll questions". So they just can't give us a time frame on anything since this isn't a job for them but a hobby. You just have wait and hope one day they fix it.

I visit here and check nightly builds everyday, hoping to find something new. I suggest you the same.

I see that 600D now has the audio tab enabled. I believe that 650D owners also need such special treatment!  8)

As an 650D owner I'm ready for any testing whatsoever. I have the SESCOM audio cable (A/V to 3.5mm jack), FiiO headphone amplifier and monitoring headphones. Everythings ready. Just throw me an experimental build with audio tab enabled and I'll check the audio monitoring and all other features. :)

Hi guys, I wasn't here about the last six months I'd just like to know how the things going.

Does this alpha version have problems or looks great in every field? If doesn't, finally I'd really like to try it.
By the way how far is the beta version (or the final)? What else needed to get that status?

Thank you

Magic Zoom is flickering and audio features are disabled. Apart from these it is fully functional.

Nobody knows when they will be fixed. I am also waiting for it.

Solid as a rock making a living with it

I agree, it is very stable. If only MZ wasn't flickering and audio features were enabled. That would be totally awesome.

I came across to this thread: http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=2032.0

Since 650D and 600D are similar, is it possible for us to implement 600D Audio features to 650D build?

I guess it shouldn't be too hard to copy 600D audio features to 650D nightly builds.

I guess I didn't understand the whole thing. Do I have to repeat the whole installation process for each new SD card i plug in? Because I did everything and I can't seem to make ML run on my second SD card.

So let's say I format an SD card with ML files in it? Do I have to repeat installation again?

Why did you format the card after making it bootable!? You should just copy files on it. Then you can format it in-camera.

I formatted it in camera.

First, you should make your card bootable with EOScard for Windows or MacBoot for Mac.

I did. And then I did a low level format before extracting ML files to the card. But still no go. Nothing happens when I press the trashbin button.
#74
I installed ML for my first 32GB card, for my second 32GB card I just copied files from the first one and it didn't work.

What are the steps I should follow?

Reporting a potential bug

I have a Class 10 SDHC card which says it can write and read up to 20MB/s. So I tested CBR modes today and starting from 1.2x to 3.0x I couldn't notice any difference and when I checked the bitrate of the files, I saw that CBR settings doesn't actually cause any effect on the video. A video shot with CBR 3.0x settings has roughly same bitrate and filesize as CBR 2.0X or 1.0x

Can anybody test and confirm this?

***
ALSO

All I have to play with is the CBR. Where is the VBR (Qscale) mode on 650D? I couldn't find it anywhere.
Thanks in advance.

OK I had to press Q. Got it...
