Do I need to convert the DNG files with Adobe DNG Converter?
I can already open the DNG files that Raw2DNG spits out...

Very curious as to what pros and cons there may be, in terms of the larger resolution sensor, and presumably faster processors, buffers, etc.

Wondering if there are plans to get ML working on the new Canon 5DS camera.  :-*

Every installation guide I find, people always seem to forget the part about THE SD CARD HAS TO BE MADE BOOTABLE

Raw Video / Re: MAC - raw2dng vs RAWMagic
September 15, 2013, 02:38:17 PM
Cheers, I'm starting to get my head around all this.

I guess we have to go through the extra steps in the process with RAW, just like we do with still photography and ACR.

I hope some time we have better RAW file support in software such as Final Cut, After Effects, etc..

Raw Video / MAC - raw2dng vs RAWMagic
September 15, 2013, 03:29:53 AM
Just wondering what the experience has been for you fellow OSX users?

When I use RAWMagic, it converts my .raw into a folder of DNG files.
RAWMagic processes very fast.
I can preview these files DNG in finder, though they have a magenta cast.
They open fine in ACR.

When I use raw2dng, it is slower than RAWMagic.
It outputs DNG files which I cannot preview in Finder. It also outputs a .mov file.

Are people having the same experience with these apps?
Are there any better alternatives for RAW>DNG conversion on OSX?

Thanks

General Help Q&A / Re: A couple of stupid questions
September 15, 2013, 03:02:56 AM
Thanks for the reply. I appreciate it.

Yes I figured out 1 and 2. Once I changed the "LV Func Setting" to Stills+Movie (movie display), the RAW recording started working properly.

I'm using the most recent nightly build. It seems to be the best so far.

OK I am making progress.

Had to set LV Func. Setting to "Stills+Movie" / "Movie Display"  ....

This could be a stumbling block for other people I suspect.

General Help Q&A / A couple of stupid questions
September 15, 2013, 12:03:07 AM
I have a couple of silly questions. Thank you if anyone can reply with an answer!

(5d2)

  • ML is recording ".raw" file but also ".thm" and ".mov" ... Is this the way it should be?
  • What setting is best in "LV func. setting"? = "disable/stills only/stills+movie
  • Is it possible to open a ".raw" file directly in something like Final Cut, without having the convert to DNGs?

sorry if any of that is stupid. thanks.

Thanks for the link g3gg0 but it seems you still need to convert the new MLV format to RAW, and then convert the RAW to DNG files.

I was hoping we might eventually be able to record to one file, which we can open and adjust directly in After Effects /  Final Cut  etc

Seems like there is something about RAW video that I don't fully understand.

General Help Q&A / Re: 5d2 vs 6d .... Raw Video

Thanks for your thoughts. I guess I won't bother changing from 5d2 to 6d. High ISO and WiFi is not very important to me.

Thanks for the reply. Still finding the end of the process a bit confusing.

I wonder if ML will come up with a different output format or if editors such as Final Cut will eventually give better support for files such as .raw

General Help Q&A / 5d2 vs 6d .... Raw Video
September 14, 2013, 05:30:29 AM

Pretty straightforward question...

For someone shooting Raw Video, is the 6d a worthwhile upgrade to the 5d2 (for improved ISO) or does the 5d2 win because of slightly less moire, and faster write speeds with CF?

Thanks

I think most of the music is corny, but the video production is amazing.

It's nice to know I own a camera that can produce work like this, if my talent and knowledge improves. Thanks for inspiring me.

Raw Video / Am I even getting close?
September 14, 2013, 04:36:32 AM
(5d2 / OSX / Transcend 16gb 1000x)

Hey all.

So I just found out about the ML Raw Video feature today and decided to investigate.
That was 8 hours ago. I feel like I've fallen down a rabbit hole. There is a lot to take in.  :o

PLEASE could you advise me, am I going in the right direction?
Please correct or by all means, chastise any of my assumptions below...

Here's what I think I know so far:

  • Magic Lantern is a free, third party firmware "sidekick" which ads functionality to various Canon cameras.
  • ML is in ongoing development. New features get more refined and straightforward over time (I hope so)
  • With Magic Lantern on my 5d2 I can shoot Raw Video.
  • Raw Video requires large file sizes but will allow me more dynamic range, greater control over colour/exposure/sharpness etc, just like when shooting stills and using ACR.
  • Faster cards are recommended. CF cards tend to be faster than SD. 1000x UDMA cards are good.
  • When recording RAW video, eventually it will mess up, so recording smaller dimensions such as 1600x900 buys you time
  • Certain settings can be applied in both Canon menu and ML menu to optimize performance (????)
  • The video file will be saved as a ".RAW"
  • Video editors such as Final Cut and Premier cannot open RAW video files. They must first be opened/adjusted in Camera Raw, just like with shooting RAW still photos (????)
  • On a mac I can use something like "RAW2DNG" to convert my .RAW file to a series of individual frames, dng files.
  • dng files are different from cinema.dng files (i think?)
  • dng files can be compiled into an editable format such as .mov by first opening them in Adobe Camera Raw, making adjustments, then exporting as TIFF, then compiling them with Quicktime (?????? there must be a quicker way of doing this????)
  • DiVinci Resolve can be used to umm.. open dng files and convert them to .mov?? (not sure)

Am I getting there?

I managed to get ML installed, and shoot some video at 1600x900, but converting the RAW file into something I can work with in Final Cut is my main stumbling block right now.

THANKS for any tips!

Great thread. Thanks.

I only installed it today but for now I'm getting the best results on my 5d2 using 1600x900 24p continuous shooting with 1000x Transcend card ...
