Hello,

I shoot some raw video with my Canon 60D at 1280 x 544 pixel.
I convert the MLV files with MlRawViewer Version 1.4.3 to get some DNG Files.
I open the dng files in AE CS6 .. and also tried DaVinci Resolve 11.

I noticed some difference when i open the DNG Files in DaVinci.
Have a look:

AE CS6 Version (good):

DaVinci Resolve Version (bad):

Resolve VS AE comparison (scale: 150%):

AE looks so much better. The "camera ISO noise" is much smaller than in the "Resolve" Version.
I tried different settings in Resolve (set everything up to high resoution) but
cannot fix that problem.

Its not only the noise... when you donwload both imges and switch between the two images
you will notice that the davince version is darker than the AE Version.. but i use the same color temperature,
gama, etc. (i did not change the gama at all). But the main problem is the noise.

"anyone doing any better with raw?"

What do you mean? "anyone" tried raw to a different time.
What do you want? Check the latest release an try raw for yourself
if you want. And post video, too. any feeback is good.

Check this thread:

If you check this thread you find some videos...
and some people post infos like this:
--------------------------------------
370 Frames
1280x720
Sandisk Extreme Pro 16gb 95mb/s
--------------------------------------
610 Frames
1280x582
Sandisk Extreme Pro 16gb 95mb/s
--------------------------------------

610 frames / 25 fps = 24 Seconds.

You wrote "so, is my Scan Disk extreme Pro 95 MB/s a FAKE?"

No. You card works fine.
The 60D ist not able to write faster than 20 Mb/s.

With a 20 mb/ s card you will get 20 mb/s
If you have a 50 mb/s card .... you also only get writing speed 20 mb/s
with a 95 mb/s card you also get only 20 mb/s.

get it?

First:
you guys are awesome!

Second:
The RAW Features will/is THE big thing and its amazing that
you try RAW even on cameras like the 60D.

But. I think the limitations are to big to shoot RAW continously on
a small camera. But it would be great if you could find a way
to get away from h.264.
Everyhting is better than h264.

- Maybe a "Craw" Version. A 4:2:0 Raw Version / An 8-Bit (or 10 Bit Raw version)
- or "jpgs sequenze" (96% jpg will be better than h264)

Just found this video on vimeo:

1280 x 544 pixel
410 frames (16 seconds)
Card = Cheap Transcend Class 10 card

hmm.
i wish the list would be more specific.
For example the 60D Row:

continuous rec = 960 x 540 px.
137 frames = 1728 x 972 px.

I wish people whi tried RAW would feed the doc with more pixelsize info + rec . time.

What about 1280 x ___  (720p) how many frame recording is possible.
(maybe i have to install and test it by myself)

And will the RAW Feature ever get into a "stable release" of ML?
I'm not asking when it will happen. take your time. I'm just asking
if the RAW feature will become a stable thing or not.

You can use 20 mb/s, or 100 MB/s or 1000 MB/s SD Card.
The Problem is that the writing speed on the D60 is limmited to 21 MB/s.

You cannot write anything that is faster than 21 MB/s.
That how the Hardware of the D60 is built. You cannot change that.
Even with a 100 MB/s SD Card... the speed is only 21 mb/s.

And with that speed you are not able to record in higher resolution.
Or if you shoot in higher resolution you can only record 134 frames.... (7 seconds)
I don't think that there is any fix.

It would be great if there would be an intern codec, better than h264.
To generate DNG files, oder PNG files, not at 12 bit, maybe 10bit.
smaller imagesize.... so that you don't need w writing speed up to 90 MB/s.
But i don't think this will ever happen.

check this:
http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=6215.0

960 x 540 pixel for continuous filming.
If you shoot something near HD you can only shoot 7 seconds.

You don't need a faster card than 21 MB/s cause the D60 cannot write more than 21 MB/s to the card.
So you can't record longer or in higher resolution with a faster card.

@Pointblaster: ... and how many seconds/frame could you record?
#93
My questtion is...
Is it only a container format, or is it more than that?
The thing is. DSLR like 60D will not be able to record RAW nearly FullHD
and more than ca.10 seconds.
But it would be so great to not record in h264.
Something like "uncompressed png, tiff, photojpg".
Not RAW, but also not h.264.

Question is... would it be possible to reencode in camera in
a new file fomat which is not exactly raw but better than h.264.
Something like 8-bit RAW instead of 14-bit RAW.
Simple to minimize the files size, so that Cameras like D60 could
record almost FullHD in "better than h.264" quality.

Raw Video / Something between h.264 and RAW
September 11, 2013, 04:11:32 PM
Hello,

My english is not that good but i will try my best.
The RAW features are awesome. But some DSLR (60d) are limited writing on SD Cards.
So. my question is.
Why RAW? I know. RAW got a high dynamic range. Its 14 bit, right?
For HD you need 90-100 MB per Second.

Would it be possible to write only 12-bit, 10-bit, or 8-bit RAW Files.
Or uncompressed png files, or tiffs-sequenze, or PhotoJPG (95%-100%)
I think RAW will never be possible for Canon D60. (FullHD, or nearly FullHD)
But it would be great to shoot nearly FullHD in an almost uncompressed File Format. (anything better than h264)
Not exactly RAW, but also not H264.

I don't know if its a silly idea. Maybe there is allready
a thread about this topic in this forum anywhere.?!
