Thanks for starting the thread, I've been wondering this myself as the write speeds seem to be fastest when there are ZERO displays on screen while recording.

Raw Video / 5D2 Spanning Limit?
August 24, 2013, 02:06:41 AM
Hi everyone,

Apologies if this is addressed somewhere else, but I did a few searches and didn't find any conclusive answers to this question.  But I noticed I cannot shoot more than 10 spanned files on my 5d2.  I'm using 64GB 1000x Komputerbay CF cards and I notice that even though it says continuous OK @ 1856x1004, the camera stops at around 10 files (1 .RAW and .R00-.R09) I've done this a few times and it seems every time it stops at around that mark.  Just wondering if this is a limitation of the camera or whether there is a way around this.

Thanks so much!

Interesting! Thanks for the power saving suggestion.  johnansugarev- would you mind explaining the rationale behind adding the variable ND filter? Does that help so it doesn't look too bright? You take it off before shooting?

I was wondering if there was a way to have global draw on and off with a shortcut key, I noticed with the info button I can toggle to the Canon info which shows shutter speed/aperture/exposure/iso but even having that info up on the screen seems to slow write speed a little bit.  With Global Draw function off, I can toggle the info button until there are no displays on the screen aside from the framing window.

Sorry, might have missed this somewhere, but what is the option to hide the histogram and the global draw info after everything's set and right before you're ready to shoot!

And many thanks for the clarification about ETTR in video mode!

I just did a test where I recorded about 9 minutes continuously at 1852, then around 9:30 it drops from 75MB/S to 1.0-3.0 MB/S and then drops a frame and stops.  I'm using the August 16th build.

Have you guys noticed that?

1856x1004 (I'm shooting at 1:85)

ah, so it's not the card that's the problem but the 5d2.  I've tested all three cards with a usb3.0 reader and black magic's disk test and they all write at around 109MB/S.  I guess I just want to make sure that those are the fastest speeds people are getting so I can decide whether or not to return them.

I'll have to test the 1872 16:9 and see how long I can record continuously

thanks a lot!

hey all,

first time posting, been following the ml raw threads for a while, thanks for sharing all the stuff you guys have tried out! So much inspiration in these forums.

Just picked up a few 64GB Komputerbay cards and was testing them out on the 5D2.  I'm getting about 74.5 ish MB/sec after they're warmed up I can record continuously for probably 6-7 minutes on average before I get a dropped frame.  Just wondering if that's standard for the 5D2 and 64GB 1000x Komputerbay Cards.

Does anyone know how to check the chipset on the cards? I noticed the benchmark tool doesn't show it on the 5d2, unlike the 5d3.

Thanks so much !
