Feature Requests / Rack focus stops
October 30, 2013, 09:29:04 PM

I know inside magic lantern right now we got rack focus we can set it to rack focus from one point to the other and we can also view the focus distance on the lens, however the rack focus does not always work well on all lenses and not alway work the speed you want.

What I suggest is something to help people who rather manual focus it but have a tool to give you the information where to rack focus to giving you informations to see where to stop. As certain shots you would not have time to look at your follow focus to see where to focus to. Like if you have a panning shot while distance to the objects be the same you still need to look at the framing while panning but also rack focus at the right moment.

So have a kind of a ruler shown on the screen where you can set markers while you focus you can see where your focus is at that point. And quickly set multiple markers by focussing to the right spot then to go to the menu or assign a certain button to set a marker and able to set multiple ones and just have a reset button to clear out the markers.

Hopefully you guys could add this kind of information on the screen as it would greatly help people to focus and easily manual focus without having to add tons of gadgets to focus better.

LED are nice but sun light is very strong annd LED panels wont do much you need like atleast a 10.000watt light output which with a HMI be more possible and LED wont get any where close to that they produce more like 100 to 500wattof light. A reflector be more what you need if you want to be more portable and have low budget.

Just build more modify your Manfrotto videopod by adding these extra things to make it into a simple steadicam. Also these parts are not permanent and can be removed quickly to transform your steadicam back into the normal videopod.

If you want really wide buy Canon 10-22mm and remove the rubber on the back then you can use that lens at 11mm which probably be the widest lens that covers the whole sensor plus does not give you a fisheye effect. Plus being so wide everything is in focus so you dont have to change focus at all on the steadicam.

It work fine to power your camera but its quite expensive but can film long periods without changing the battery.

I tried it out finally with the Sandisk extreme pro 95mbs 32gb it can do 1152x482 and 23fps continuesly

Get a 10-22mm lens you really need it to capture great landscapes and next to it 28-105 to have more to zoom and with these two would be enough to cover most things.

Zoom h1 if you want to keep it small and simple also nice to just put in a pocket with a lavalier mic so people could walk around without having the mic attached to the camera.

The Kowloon Waterfront is quite a nice park in Hong Kong and very nice to have a stroll and also its not as crowded as Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront, also you have a quite nice view over Hong Kong and was easy to timelapse the light show without having other people in the way.

Timelapse shot with Canon EOS 550D with Magic Lantern unified usig the FPS override.
Canon 10-22mm f3.5-4.5 Lens.

Its not that bad but I prefer Technicolor picturestyle more but it has a certain use for it in very bright conditions it quite nice it give more detail in the bright areas as the Technicolor does the opposite and give more detail in the shadows.

Gone for the canon now and suprisingly the f3.5 is brighter than f3.5 on the kitlens, plus the shops suddenly upped the tokina from 3400 to 4200hkd litterally 1 day difference they change the price, luckily the shop with the canon was less of a bastard and the extra 1mm is very much appreciated when I tested it in the elavator and fits just perfects if 1 mm less would not be able to cover the whole thing.

21 May 2013 a very stormy night with allot of rainfall and lightning. Also it was a great night to test out filming slomotion at night as isnt allot of light and that might be difficult.

ISO640 ISO800
Aperture f1.2/ f2 / f2.8
Shutter 1/94 at cause of the binding cause by some of street lighting, 1/120 at certain lights which doesnt cause binding
No twixtor used, just change made Premiere to interpret frame rate from 60fps to 10fps

The price for both are quite simular at the moment I can pick up the Tokina for 3400hkd and Canon for 3500hkd. The Tokina is faster with f2.8 and  have auto focus if I wan to use it for event photography. Mainly filming low light be great as Canon is not that bright and fast. But the main thing is I cant find any pictures showing the difference between 10 and 11mm if that is quite a different or not. But the Canon is lighter which be nice with steadicam like hague mmc as my current kitlens with wide angle converter weight around 354gram together. Canon 11-22 weight 386gram and Tokina wieght 548gram. Which of the two do you guys reckon be best.

The f2.8 is nice especially to film at night and low light conditions but I see allot of people talking about the Canon but mostly are reviews for Photography and not filming and with taking photo you can have slow shutter while filming its quite limited.

I would not mind a 720p that been crop to a cinescopish crop as I dont even upload anything bigger than 720p. But would like to test it if any want to compile it for 550d, also wasnt 550d more stable than 600d with allot of the coding?
#43
I been looking through the forums but can't see the compiling codes, I wouldn't mind trying to compile a version for 550D to test out if it workable. Can anyone direct me to the right post with the codes? Or if someone could quickly compile on for 550D i wouldn't mind to test it out.

Its ok but have to say you need to still learn the skill of using it as standard version has no monitor for you to frame it with, but there is a wifi app for you phone to see what it is filming. However if you want to film and frame something underwater the wifi can't send any signal through the water. Also the battery life is horrible and just film for one hour and it dies, if you dont have the additional battery pack. So if you buy it still need to get tons of other thing to make life easier to use it.

If you shoot RAW you can always change it in lightroom or photoshop.

never had this but either you never formatted your card before or you might need to buy external cardreader since I only use an external cardreader as my mac does not have the build in one.

600D is the only camera with the video crop mode in the Canon Range and it increases the zoom range quite allot with out using the quality and keeping it 1080p, just only don't zoom in too much or else you loose quality, mainly if you dont go pass the 5x zoom it still is good too use. Also is great as you don't need to carry more lenses with you as you can add this bit of extra zoom. 600D is much better option, the better build is nothing to brag about, only if you are afraid of dropping the camera. But mainly be always pretty careful with the camera. I atleast drop my 550d from heights above 1meter several times mostly busted several lenses and got several scratch marks but still works, still not really recommended to drop a dslr.

Feature Requests / Setting tips
September 15, 2012, 06:18:44 AM
Just some info that the camera would give you advise on what ideal setting for shutter, aperture and iso would be. Can set like ISO priority, Shutter priority (TV) , Aperture Priority (AV) information by locking each one of them and maybe quick button to jump to those settings, if wanted. Cause I have to say sometimes in light changing environments, you won't be quick enough to change settings or mess about, plus you don't want to go full auto on it as you don't want it to change the setting the whole time you are filming. Just give you quick tip on settings so you dont have to search through the settings and quickly go to the best one.

I worked with the Sigma 18-55mm f2.8 build for EF-S and my friend bought it for really cheap. The lens worked quite well on the 550D, only for photography the lens is horrible in focussing at the wide end. Filming wise not much of a problem. However reading several review the Canon 17-55mm be what you want to buy as it better than others out there. However for me I wouldn't get any EFS lenses as they are only useable for crop sensors and I would like to upgrade to the 5D or a Full frame it would not be possible, so I rather only buy EF lenses.

Part are sold at camera shops and nothing really needs any manufacturings.
