Raw Video / Re: Dual ISO raw video problem. Need help!

Make sure you don't record some "very important video" before you actually test out the workflow, confirm that it works and you fully understand the process.   ;)

You might consider the newer model which has higher resolution and an all metal body:

http://www.amazon.com/2013-New-Lilliput-Monitor-1280x800/dp/B00BN4HOLK/ref=sr_1_3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1378313179&sr=1-3&keywords=lilliput+monitor+663

It's a bit more expensive, but that's what I'm planning to get.

There are a number of discussions in the Hardware forum which you might want to take a look at, but from what I can understand, the consensus seems to be that on the 5D3, external monitoring should work.

Raw Video / Re: ML RAW + Atomos Ninja 5D3

Yes, you are dreaming.  ;D

I think the primary issue with the 5D is the speed of the CPU. Apparently it's quite slow and asking it to perform any calculation beyond just throwing raw data at the card is beyond its capabilities.

What you're asking would definitely require some sort of real-time image processing to convert the raw data to something that could be outputted through the HDMI port and retain as much of the visual fidelity that raw captures.

All of the developers would seem to agree that the CPU can't deal with that type of processing....then again if they can figure out how to reverse engineer some of the other dedicated image processing chips, it might be possible.

You TRAITOR! How DARE you!!

It's not like he said he was dumping Canon for Blackmagic!   ;D

Did you forget to Load the Modules?

Never mind....SDX is right, your ML is way too old. Raw has only been around since this past May.

Additionally make sure you do this:

You should check that in Canon Menu:
Image Quality = Raw

I'm confused, I thought it is best if the camera still image quality is set to jpeg and not raw....has something changed?

Raw Video / Re: SD or CF For Raw video
September 02, 2013, 08:00:45 PM
Don't just buy any CF card....get one that is as fast as you can afford. 1000X or higher, you might want to read up on it. When you get your CF card in the mail, make sure you run the read/write tests and if the card isn't as fast as it needs to be, send it back and get another one.

I can't overstress how important the card is with raw recording.
#558
You have to admit it was a funny response though!

To answer your question, about 12 minutes depending on the resolution you're using.
#559
I think it depends on two factors:

1. What do you define 2K to be.

2. How fast your card is.

P.S.

Renato might be possibly be writing to both the CF and SD cards simultaneously...so that would help with the write speed.

I agree that Crop Mode is not particularly friendly, and is more susceptible to corrupted frames  and other assorted weirdness.

An option is to shoot with an anamorphic attachment at 1920X1288 (3:2) and then stretch out the image to roughly a 2.5k resolution frame. In my tests (and the ones conducted by Andrew Reid), the image holds up extremely well to the horizontal stretching.

There are some new developments in the anamorphic realm that seem pretty interesting:

Audio has been disabled in the recent revisions since it was not working properly.

It will come back at some point in the future, but for now there is no way to enable it.
#562
This is probably something that should be flagged to the developers if a shutter speed higher than 50 yields corrupt frames.

It's unusual for people to shoot at higher shutter speeds, but it does happen.

I wonder if maybe using the Force Frame Rate function would help with that? Just a thought.

Did you happen to be shooting in 3x Crop Mode with these shots?  I had problems with pink / corrupt frames after (while) shooting in Crop Mode on my 5d iii.

+1 on that one, I had issues when shooting in crop mode as well on the 5D3.

Hey guys, I have a workflow question. After editing reference files in FCP7, how do you replace them with image sequences? Is that even possible? Until now I've been using QT7 to export image sequences into Pro Res, which takes a lot of time doing one by one. Trying to simplify this process. Please share...

On the Mac, I think the workflow which still makes the most sense is to use something like Resolve to batch output to ProRes for editing. I think ProRes is fine for finishing too actually, if you export at ProRes 422HQ using a LOG type of look, you'll retain pretty much most of the visual information that you need. Most people who shoot on the ARRI Alexa shoot in ProRes and not raw and they seem to be just fine with the quality output, so once you process the image sequences into ProRes, I don't know if you need to go back to the DNG format for finishing.

But yeah, use Resolve for batch creating the ProRes files...it's a whole lot faster.

thank you, after 5DMkII wich would you buy?

Probably something like this:

5DmkII
Blackmagic Pocket Camera
50D

I really wouldn't bother with any of the SD card cameras, you're giving up far too much resolution. As far as the 7D, it's a work in progress, but historically ML has had such issues with that camera that I wouldn't consider investing a hefty chunk of change on it.
#567
I don't think it's a remarkable camera, nor that it doesn't have its issues....but we have to admit that for someone contemplating a 70D or a T5i, the Blackmagic makes a whole lot more sense.

what is the best LOW budget camera for RAW video.

The Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera.

Sorry but that's the truth, if you're contemplating getting a T5i or a 70D (both floating in the $1k range) and you're mainly concerned with raw video (sounds like you already have a good still camera), then get the Blackmagic Pocket, in this particular case it's the only choice which truly makes sense.

#569
I feel like I'm a broken record here, but it helps to have more info than that...such as what resolution are you shooting on, crop mode or not, what frame rate, how do you process the shots, etc.

I can tell you that I just shot 2 full cards worth of 1920X1080 footage just the other day for my latest short film, I used the August 21 revision, had Global Draw on with focus peaking and raw histograms, was shooting at some point as high as 10000 ISO, and all of my footage looks perfect (even the shot where the 1st card run out of space).

I'm not sure what to tell you, except that I don't think there's anything wrong with the August 21st revision, so it's likely the result of some other factors at work.

#570
The answer to your first two questions is 5DmkIII
#571
He had auto-shutoff enabled. Noob mistake....been there done that myself!
#572
I really doubt that this would have the frame-accurate functionality that it would need to truly be useful. If you still have to manually sync the audio in post...what's the point?

Rather, let's hope that the built-in audio functionality is restored soon to ML so that auto-syncing using Pluraleyes or the Premiere Pro equivalent is once again an option.
#573
The most recent version should allow you to increase the bit rate of the h.264 codec...however from what I read, don't expect noticeable increase in quality. Maybe some very very slight block reduction in the shadows, but that's about it. Sharpness and detail will not increase.
#574
I don't think it's possible to record "regular" raw and "dual ISO" raw simultaneously, nor is it possible to record raw and h.264 at the same time.
#575
Just understand that the "log" that you get our of the 5D will be different than what you get out of the Alexa or the Epic, so the LUT will have to be adjusted accordingly.

There is no one-size-fits-all solution.
