The problem with movie restart is that it seems (from what people say) to have a lag or gap between the two clips of somewhere from a fraction of a second to a whole second. That won't work for my purposes unfortunately. I need it to be gapless.

The native H.264 video on the 5D3 looks good enough that it would be really worthwhile being able it use it on longer-form documentary, event and corporate type stuff.

My apologies if this is a silly noob question, but I've searched high and low and can't find the answer.

Is there any version of Magic Lantern allows us to circumvent the 30-minute limit (without needing an HDMI recorder)?

(Background: As most of us know by now there are normally two limitations when it comes to recording length with stock Canon DSLRs: First, there is a 4GB file size limitation due to the FAT32 file system, which with the stock firmware video bitrate translates into about 12 minutes. Also, there is a completely arbitrary 30-minute limit so that in certain European countries Canon can avoid paying taxes on these cameras as video cameras.

While FAT32 only allows files up to 4GB in size, the 5D3 and certain other cameras support the exFAT file system which allows virtually unlimited file sizes, so if Magic Lantern were able to isolate and remove the arbitrary 30-minute limitation, the file system limitation would no longer matter.)

[EDIT: I'm actually interested in recording the native H264 video, not raw video. Greater than 30 minutes of RAW video would be an incredible amount of data, but with the 1080p24 ALL-I 91Mbps bitrate, a 32GB card could, if it weren't for the arbitrary 30-minute limitation, theoretically hold 48 minutes of video. A 64GB card could hold 1hr36min in a single, continuous clip....]

This may be a silly question but I've searched through the forums & I can't find the answer anywhere (my apologies if I've missed something obvious).
With the Alpha 3 version (or any other version), is it possible to record H.264 video (NOT RAW!) longer than 30 minutes on the 5D3, provided the card is formatted exFAT?

I am trying to see if it is possible to record the native H.264 5D3 video for longer than the 30-minute limit, and I would like to avoid altering the bootflag on the camera if at all possible (that's why I'm attracted to the Alpha 3 version, as if I'm not mistaken it doesn't alter the bootflag).

With this goal in mind, what is the best ML version for me to be using?

Yes, I have been able to record clips longer than 4GB. Just tonight I recorded a 9GB test clip that was automatically broken into three files which Raw Magic combined with no problems at all. (used the Sept 12 build)

That doesn't help, because the auto-start leaves gaps in the clips. I need continuous clips with no gaps.

7D *does* support exfat, its in the FW strings. But 7D doesn't want to let you use it on cards under 128GB. I think this would need an actual firmware patch which I'm unsure how to do... in theory it would gain some speed.

Iiiiinteresting.... so exFAT would work on 128+GB cards? 1%, do you think the process I used above would work if I used a 128GB card?

UPDATE: NM, on the other thread 1% said that apparently the 7D DOES support exFAT, just only on cards >=128GB...

Over on this thread here "ted ramasola" says that the 7D does NOT support exFAT. Does everyone agree with this?

If so, the Google doc I referenced above should be changed, because it says that the 7D does support exFAT.

For what it's worth, I tried the following process, and it didn't work 

Here's what I tried:
- I did a complete ML install process using a FAT32 card and confirmed ML was working on the 7D
- I reformatted the CF card to exFAT in Apple Disk Utility
- I ran MacBoot again just to make sure the card was still bootable
- I recopied all the necessary ML files back onto the root of the CF card
- I put the card back in the camera, turned it on....

... and got the "this card is not readable" error.

If you install the 7D alpha 2 (and not the 2.3) you will not have bootflags set (which is safer because if there is a problem and ML autoboots that can be difficult to fix)

Yeah, that's exactly my concern: I'd much rather ML be "opt-in" on my camera, so it can be easily removed if necessary, than "opt-out" and have to go through some hoops to remove it if something breaks.

I haven't had a chance to read all 52 pages of that thread yet so I apologize if this is addressed in there somewhere, but it sounds like the original alpha 2 did not include raw shooting (or the raw module). I know ML is in the process of getting modulized, can a raw module be loaded into the 7D alpha 2? If so, what file would that be?

Question about the whole boot flag / bootable card issue:

Is it possible to run the ML 7D code (with the raw module) WITHOUT booting from the card, in other words loading ML manually each time the camera boots?

AFAIK there still isn't the ability to disable the boot flag on the 5DIII once you've enabled it, so I wouldn't want to... and I'm trying to emulate the ML 5DIII workflow as closely as possible on my 7D before I start messing with my 5DIII.

Any help from anybody more familiar with the ML code than I am is appreciated!

I'm a professional photographer, but I'm a ML newbie & this is my first post.
I've added a column to the Google doc for "Max res at 30p continuous"... I hope nobody minds!
I added the column because 30p is important for a lot of people. I'm going to be buying either a BMPC4K or a 5D3 based on what the devs here are able to squeeze out of the 5D3.

By the way, my INFINITE thanks to all the devs here who've volunteered so much of their time and expertise making these cameras better for everyone.
