Hardware and Accessories / Re: MustHD field monitors
October 06, 2014, 09:40:00 PM
Wanted to update on this. I returned my 7" last month (Sept 3rd) after it failed to display any signal. Don't know what happened, one minute it was working, then next minute... nothing but blue screen. I've only used it on 2 projects (music video with bmpc4k and fashion one with my 5d3).

I tried hooking it up to my 5D3, BMPCC and BMPC4k, but it failed to display anything. I tried setting the monitor to factory default, but to no avail. Even tried a 2nd HDMI wire for 5D3 and BMPC4k.

I didn't do anything out of the ordinary and always babied the monitor. MustHD was gracious enough to offer a refund, but the pain of shipping overseas -- it's been over a month now and according to USPS tracking, it's still shows as not delivered. USPS attempted a delivery on Sept 12, but wasn't deliverable. I contacted MustHD and gave them the tracking#. Still waiting on this.

On another note, I've since bought SmallHD DP4 and is extremely satisfied with it.

how about the sync'ing delay when you turn on..or pressing record
also is the framing good with 5d3? Does it keep full res while recording?
cheers

It takes a couple of seconds to turn on and sync'ing delay after you press record is about a 1 sec or 2 tops. It records full 1080 while recording -- there's even an option to shoot at 480p. If I have time this week, I'll make a short video of everything.

I just received my 1066x 128gb card. Not sure if I'm testing this right, but here are some benchmarks.

I want to update on this. I have the 7" MustHD and it works with Magic Lantern. I was able to record MLV + audio fine on it, but all the ML globaldraw function disappears once you press record and then reappears once recording stops. Its Peak function is kind of lame, but better than nothing. Build quality is really good for the price point.

Also works flawlessly with Blackmagic Pocket Cam  8)

All in all, I'm definitely happy with it though I think I should have gotten the 5.6" model as the 7 is pretty big.

Hey guys,

Anyone know why I would get extensions like .M01, .M02, .M03, .M04 etc etc? All of them are showing 1KB. I'm using Nightly.2014Mar24.5D3113 build on 5d3 and shooting mlv + sound in 1920x1080.

Thanks

Sorry,

Not sure if it's some odd, random glitch, but I cleaned out my cache and rebooted. So far everything is working like normal now.... odd
#7
Sorry, please disregard -- it's working now. Is there a way to delete a post?

Hey guys,

Long time raw user, but new to .mlv scene. I have a few interview clips I shot in .mlv format -- also used H6 recorder as well. I converted .mlv to dng via MLV Converter v1.9.1 (plus video proxies), but there was no audio file. Not sure if I was supposed to do anything else in ML menu (my audio levels on my 5d3 were moving during the interview). But anyway, that didn't matter as much at first since I recorded audio to H6 recorder. So I imported the video proxies and H6 audio clips into Premiere Pro CC. I then manually sync'd the clips by reading the lips. At the beginning the audio was in sync, but as the video continues, the audio goes out of sync (faster)

The audio was recorded in 44100 hz - 16 bit.

I've tried changing the audio format from 44100 to 48kHz in Audition, but that didn't do anything either. The video proxy is 23.976... same with the cdng and sequence settings. I'm unsure what to do.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks

Nang, any news on the Sandisk CF card?  The specs say only 60MB/s Write.  It is way cheaper than the other 128GB cards so it would be great if it worked with continuous 1080p.  Thanks.

Sorry for not updating, but there was a change to the plan. I was heading to B&H, but then I received an alert that my KB 1000x 64gb was delivered. I ended up benchmarking/testing that card instead and then using it on a couple of shoots. I'll eventually give that Sandisk a try, but for now I have enough cards and don't have as much time.

Sorry again

in raw video tab there is a "2nd" global draw switch, I think its OFF by default. Turn it ON

Perfect! thank you very much!  :D

Also, the overall layouts & features are sooo much better versus August builds. I'm loving it!

Thank you!

I haven't updated since August 2013 so I'm very behind on features, please bare with me. I just updated to 2014.Mar24.5D3113 and so far everything is good. I'm going over and playing around with some features, but I can't for the life of me find an option to keep my overlays on when recording. I see the overlays when not recording, but when I do press record, they all disappear except for the green light and the counter. Any help please?

Thank you

it should work with this older version as well - for sure its a bug in my code for raw-data - but, yours is really old :)

I'll look into updating to a more recent build. My concern is if something goes wrong. The August build has been working flawlessly thus far, but maybe it's time to update. Might give mkv a shot, but I record my audio externally so I never really had a need for this.

I tried version 1.4.9 and for the most part it works, but it crashes randomly.

@nangDid You used RAW or MLV-Files?

I tried on RAW files and I'm using August 13th build. Maybe that's the reason why? I haven't updated because everything's been working perfectly since August.

http://www.phreekz.de/wordpress/2013/06/magiclantern-raw2cdng-cinema-dng/

16.03.2014 – v1.4.9.6 – bug fixing
* timecode set to 00:00:00:00
* framerate in dng fixed
* mlv-batchmode fixed
* framesCount in GUI fixed

* 16bit and 12bit linear partymode are ok (in photoshop, acr, resolve and premiere, i think speedgrade as well, not tested)
* 12bit log/bmcc and 10bit are not really useable by now. investigating.

* linking video/audio in resolve via rightbutton link. searching for the according filename-conventions to get it automatically.

Not sure if I'm doing something wrong, but I downloaded this version and placed them into my raw folder. I checked "Partymode", 1.0 for gamma, changed output path, and drag my raw files onto the Batchlist. When I click on convert to CDNG, a pop-up appears that says 'raw2cdng has stopped working'. I tried doing it again and change bitdepth and such, but still getting the same pop-up. Any suggestions?

Thanks

That one is exactly the card - for me it did a full cards worth of mlv with sound, 1920x1080x25, without dropping frames or any anomalies. I would say that in both of my 5d3's it's a bit faster than the 256G/Extreme Pro.
I will order the 128G version also for testing.

Thanks, I'll head over to B&H tomorrow and give this Sandisk a shot. I'll update

For capacity the best card is 256G Sandisk Extreme Pro, that does 1920x1080@25 with 5d3, but not 30 (at least mine does not).
Cheapest RELIABLE sandisk-option for me seems to be Sandisk Extreme 120MB/s - i've got one 64G version and it does well with 1920x1080@25.
I did like Komputerbay before, but with the long waiting period for exchange if the card is faulty the sandisk seems like a better option.

Is this the Sandisk Extreme 120MB/s that can do continuous 1920x1080 @24 on 5d3?

It not that it's unreliable, it just that if one of the drives crashes you won't be able to recover any data :O so that's why it important to have another drive to backup the raid0.

Quote from: reddeercity on February 28, 2014, 04:13:34 AM
No Raid 0 is find as long as you Have backup, I never have lost a Raid 0 yet, but the possible is there.
you could also look at a raid 0+1 which is just a mirrored raid 0 which there again you need 4 drives
but there is redundancy there. One more option is to look at 10,000 rpm WD VelociRaptor 600gb I run them in my
Server , Workstation &  my Older MacPro. There are Cheap now days, just a thought. :)

this discussion is totally OT.
but i want to add my 2c:

Single disk failure probability is P(A) for disk1 and P(B) for disk2.
iirc the probabilities are like that:

RAID0 is less reliable than a single disk, but faster if you use striping.
probability of failure is P(A) + P(B)

RAID1 is more reliable than both, but has not more disk space than a single disk.
probability of failure is P(A) * P(B)

RAID5 uses three disks and provides the same reliability as RAID1
probability of failure is a bit more complex but assuming the disks are uniform.
(P(A) + P(B) - P(A) * P(B)) * (P(A) + P(B) - P(A) * P(B))

AWESOME!! Thanks guys for all the info! Guess I'll have to figure out my budget. Hopefully this MLV raw file native support plugin will be available at a lower price so I can push harder to build

Just make sure you backup your Raid 0 , if you lose 1 drive you loose the Raid  :'(
and all data loss. Maybe look at a Raid5 minimum 3 drive, 4 drives would better
and if you loose a drive you are Ok not to mention the increase in speed.
That's my setup Raid5 R/W 425MB/s 450MB/s  :D
Most hi-end Mother board support raid 5, Just my two cents worth.

Hmm that sounds like a good setup, but I won't be able to afford so many drives to do one Raid. Is Raid 0 that unreliable? I currently have 5 external hard drives (I like to backup my backups  :D)

Obviously CPU is important, at least 16gb of ram, a cuda card for premiere, but the most important thing I think is the hard drives, you need to set them well, if you have 4 of them it'd be great.
1 ssd for system and apps
1 raid0 of many hdd would be great for footage.
1 for media cache, preview files, windows paging file.
1 for export.
If all are ssd at least you know there mignt not be bottleneck of data happening. But of course it's expensive :O

Not to stray off topic, but I'm looking to build a desktop to handle raw/dng files and would be this be an okay hard drive setup?

1 ssd(256gb) for OS/apps
1 ssd(128gb) for media cache, preview files
2x 7200rpm 2TB HDD in raid 0 for raw/footage/dng
1 HDD (something like 3 or 4TB 5400rpm) for exports/misc stuff

I can't afford to have all SSD drives, but I do have 1 SSD as my OS right now so I figure to get another SSD and few HDD.

Thanks

Hardware and Accessories / MustHD field monitors
February 17, 2014, 01:47:00 AM
Did a search but didn't find any threads on this product. Anyone here have experience with MustHD monitors? Not sure if this product is new or what not, but I couldn't find much video reviews out there other than the company's promos.

5" - http://www.musthd.com/products/5-inch-musthd-lcd-hdmi-field-monitor-with-focus-assist-marker-false-color-41.html
5.6" - http://www.musthd.com/products/56-inch-musthd-1280800-on-camera-field-monitor-with-hdmi-input-focus-assistance-exposure-76.html

These monitors have some nice features. I've been using my Samsung Note I for composing/focusing my projects, but it's becoming more and more annoying so I'm looking for a decent field monitor. Ideally I would like to get SmallHD, but it's just way too much.

Thanks

I'm using this:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/815153-REG/Transcend_TS_RDF8K_USB_3_0_Multi_Card.html
It can read the Transcend 400x card about 110MB/s which is higher than the specified speed (90 MB/s) for that card.

+1 for the above. It's been working like a charm

Hey guys, anyone using cr2hdr.exe for video via 5d3 ever get the "The filename or extension is too long" error? It worked fine for two of my DNG folders, but now I keep getting this error. Is it because there are too many dng files being dropped on it?

Thanks in advance

***EDIT -- please ignore above... I ended up dragging and dropping half of dng's at a time in the folder. Working fine now... silly me.

Amazing video!! Both in shooting and editing. What resolution did you use for shooting? Also what lens did you use? If you don't mind me asking.

Great work! Image looks lovely and really flowing shots.

Actually I really like the feel of the handheld shots as I think it really fits the style you're portraying. Doing it totally by steadicam would change the style I guess.

Thank you very much! Yeah I can see it that way, thanks for the feedback  :)

Beautiful images that come out from that machine!!!

Nice video.  How do you recorded this video, with shoulder rig, steadycam... ??

Thank you very much! I used a steadicam for a couple of shots, some with shoulder rig and some handheld. Looking back though, I should have done all in steadicam.
