Absolutely, having sync audio recorded in-cam is immensely valuable, but we're not talking about that - I'm referring to the fact that there are issues with beeps (and wave audio when it's enabled) being out of sync.  It creates more of a headache than it's worth, so why do people complain when it's not there?  If you can afford a $4000 camera, then surely you can afford a proper mic setup, or at the very least a hot shoe extender ($15 on Amazon) for both your Zoom (please don't say you're using the zoom's built-in mic) and your monitor.

If the audio beep isn't in sync, then what's the point?  Why don't you just use a slate (or clap your hands for that matter)?  It's not difficult at all to sync up that way.  People have done it this way for over 80 years, so why not do it (at least until they get the accompanying audio issues ironed out)?

Can't wait to test V0.6.0!!!  I've been using 0.5.5 for over a month and it's been great!  Definitely the best workflow around (edit proxies quickly, then replace with DNG sequences for final grade and output).  Keep up the good work.

Looks good.  It's an enjoyable read and should help a lot of people.  Nice to see someone helping out instead of trying to make money off of the hard work of magic lantern.   ;D

@arrinkiiii

The fireworks were done in After Effects using a mix of Red Giant's Particular and some of Video Copilot's Action Essentials II for the smoke effects.  I used a mix of Chroma Key and rotoscoping to mask the fireworks to the sky.

Shot RAW on the 5DM3 and 50D using the Magic Lantern Hack. The 5DM3 was shot at 1920x1038 (1.85). The 50D was shot at 1920x1038 resolution in cropped mode to match the 5D. A pair of 64GB 1000X KomputerBay CF cards were used for the shoot. The ratio of 5D/50D is approximately 60/40.  Can you tell which shots are which?

The RAW files were converted to dng sequences with Rawanizer ver 0.5.5. DNxHD proxies were used to edit the footage in Adobe Premiere CC. Once edited, the sequence was brought into Adobe After Effects CC via Dynamic Link and the proxies were replaced with the RAW footage. First light color correction was done in ACR, and additional corrections were performed in AE. All compositing was performed within AE.  Gorilla Grain was added to the final output.

Shot with the Gregory July 11th build. Camera was in crop mode with the resolution set to 1920x818 (2.35). The following are the settings:
fps: 23.976
shutter: 1/48
iso: 100
color profile: standard (3,0,0,0)
HacKed Mode

I was able to achieve continuous recording up to 1.85 aspect ratio using a KomputerBay 32GB 1000X.

Post-Processing: dng's were created with Rawanizer. Grading was done in ACR, with a final pass performed in Color Finesse 3. h.264 was created in Adobe Media Encoder CC.

Share Your Videos / 5DM3 & 50D Interview Shorts
July 20, 2013, 10:42:42 AM
Here are a few shorts made with a mix of 5DM3 and 50D RAW footage.  These are filmed very quickly and edited/mixed/graded in a short timespan.  If anyone is interested in my workflow, just ask.  I'm always up for refining it if anyone has any suggestions.

Just finished up an interview shot on both the 5DM3 (CU) and the 50D (Medium).  The cameras worked well together, but looking back I would have made the 50D the CU camera in order to avoid the moire.  However, I just updated the 50D to the July 11th build and tested the crop mode at 1920 1:85 and it recorded continuously on my 32GB KomputerBay 1000X CF for 5gb before I stopped it!  This is great!  I'll be sure to use this crop mode next time when I shoot alongside the 5DM3.

I'm rockin' a 3700K overclocked to 4.5ghz, a GTX 760, 32GB ram and SSD, and it's still a slow process.  You are not alone.  I'd recommend trying Rawanizer.  It's free and does a great job.  It simultaneously converts your RAW files to dng sequences and your choice of Proxy file.  This way, you can easily edit your proxies and then when you're ready for grading, you can replace your proxies with the dng sequences and only work with the footage you need.

Here's a recent interview I shot last week with 5DM3 July 11th build.  I would have liked to have spent more time lighting the subject and doing a more selective grade, but the turnaround time was very short.  The workflow wasn't without hiccups here and there, but for the most part it's a straightforward process.  I batch converted the RAW files to dng sequences and DNxHD proxies with Rawanizer ver 0.5.5. The DNxHD proxies were used to edit the footage in Adobe Premiere CC. Once edited, the sequence was brought into Adobe After Effects CC via Dynamic Link and the proxies were replaced with the RAW dng sequences. I performed a first light color correction in ACR, and additional corrections are performed in AE.  I overlayed some 35mm Gorilla Grain, but the vimeo h264 processing kinda kills it.  :(

when I shoot with the 50D, I definitely get considerable moire (haven't tested in crop mode).  This moire makes it unusable for the film unless it's used solely for facial close ups.  However, if I can utilize the crop mode free of moire, then I've got myself a good b cam.  My only issue is that the liveview framing in crop mode isn't correct - it's showing a much smaller fov compared to what the camera is actually capturing.  I've tried different preview modes (auto, canon, magic lantern grayscale, hacked), but none of them seem to fix the problem.  Am I missing something?  Please help.

I'm currently shooting a short film with the 5DM3 Raw at 1920x1080.  The image is great, but there's just something about the image from my 50D that I love.  I would like to bring the 50D onboard as a 2nd camera, but am concerned about the two resolutions mixing well together, not to mention the 50D moire.  Do you all think the 50D footage upscaled to 1920x1080 will be consistent with my 5DM3's 1920x1080 footage?

This is a phenomenal workflow!  Thanks for bringing it up.

Instead of creating after effects compositions for each shot, you could expedite the process by creating a nested sequence in Premiere (Premiere recognizes it as a single clip) and then replacing it with an after effects composition.  When you open it up in After Effects, there you will see all or your edits and you can replace them with the RAW dngs!  I really like this workflow!  Feels old school.  :)

On the June 22nd build, the last frame of every shot is pink mess of pixels.  This occurred on each of 22 shots captured onto a 64gb Komputerbay 1000x card.  My previous build was June 13th and I never had this issue.

Keep up the good work!  Thanks.

So how do I go about performing a batch process on several raw files at once?  Thanks.
#21
Thanks!  I'll give 'er a go...

Thanks.  I'm on a Windows 7 PC.

I've opened up cmd and typed 'raw2gpcf' and hit enter, at which point several lines of text appears describing different prompts.  I typed the name of my file, followed by the name of the new file I wished to create, and ended with -444 (I have Studio Premium).  Once I clicked enter, it just said it couldn't read my raw file (I attempted with several from the 5D Mark III and 50D).  Here's an example of what I typed:  'raw2gpcf X.raw Y.mov -444'

My ultimate goal is to perform a batch process on an entire card of raw files.  Do I need any other software besides Studio Premium and your raw2gpcf?  Do I need Rawanizer?

Thanks.

I've read this thread front to back, but I still have little to no clue how to navigate this RAW to Cineform process.  Can someone either explain this to me step-by-step like I'm a 4 year-old, or provide a link to the appropriate thread/post?

Thanks.

Answers:
1) 25FPS will work too, but the lower the FPS the less bandwidth is needed. Make sure you get a 1000x card and you're fine :)
2) I read that also, but I had no problem controlling an EF-S lens. Maybe someone else can help you out... If this is even an issue I am pretty sure it will be fixed one day

You can definitely control electronic aperture lenses, but it's currently a bit of a hassle.  There's an option in the magic lantern menus to select DOF Preview sticky.  When you select this, you can push the DOF preview button on the front of the camera (just to the lower left of the lens).  Once engaged, the liveview button will light up blue and your lens aperture will be correct.  However, if you are shooting raw, you must first push the live view button to begin recording, and THEN you press the DOF preview button.  When you're ready to stop recording, you must FIRST disengage the DOF preview, and THEN press the live view button to stop filming.

What do you think guys?, is it Komputerbay 64 GB 1000x the way to go?.......

Reading through the forum you'll see that the KompterBay 1000X 32gb and 64gb are great cards.  I get flawless recordings on my 50D and 5D Mark III with both flavors.
