Raw Video / Re: 60D RAW video - it's working !!!

Here's my RAW video from last week in Hawaii. Such a response to the big Sur video that I decided to shoot all my personal stuff RAW on my 60D. Ran into a few issues that were mostly space and card related but you'll see some hot pixels and there were some magenta frames. I've got some error logs to post soon too. Check it out, post done in Lightroom and FCPX.

I think the secret to avoid it would be while shooting. I got better results with the 5D2 in terms of aliasing and moire using a ND (0.9) and a Pola together in camera, and avoid super sharp lenses like Zeiss and Canon EF. A very good choice are the Leicas R, quite sharp but also soft/creamy, also vintage lenses not sharp like Meyer's and Jena east German ones. Also notice to get nice results using wide apertures, a little bit soft but less noticiable aliasing, cause it is still there  :-[

But what about all the money I invested in amazing Zeiss glass :P

Looks great. The ability of RaW for showcasing properties and scenics is just astonding. Love the shot with the jeep on the road. I just finished shooting a slight HDR video for a real estate property and its looking awesome but I lost my first day due to corruption. Its def a risk using Raw for paid gigs but its too amazing not too! Going to be in a tropical setting next week in Hawaii and I'm planning on shooting some RAW goodness there too.

Yeah I'm running into a bunch of Aliasing issues on the 60D but I think it only looks worse than normal h264 because the detail level is higher. Tomorrow I might be on the search for some post plugins to help reduce it but for now the trade off of shooting RAW is much better. Even my Big Sur video on the MarkIII had some aliasing on the opening bridge shot but then I think that's cause the sharpness was set to 25 in Lightroom.

If you guys want one of the clips to dissect let me know but i just went and reshot everything as it seemed too corrupted to fix and the newest build worked smooth. Thanks for all your efforts!

Just finished processing the footage. Shot for about an hour in 80 degree heat, fairly continuous once the buffer was back to 0, nearly 100 clips at 1728 and only had one magenta frame on the second to last clip on the second frame. All paid work....Sweeeeeet.  ;D

I'm getting similar result with the 45mbps SanDisk 32 gb - between 330-350 frames...

I did some paid work with the 1280x720p RAW already. I am quite happy actually. I let my client know that there is a possibility of loosing the data and processing delays(due to the workflow) + I shot only scenes that won't cost anything to remake except some fuel for my car.

My rules when it comes to shooting with the RAW module:
1) 45 mbps or above for the SD card.
2) ONLY 1280x720 works properly when it comes to magenta frames, skipping and proper raw2dng extraction.
3) Global draw - OFF. Otherwise 2 out of 10 shots will have magenta frames.
4) After shooting a sequence and seeing the buffer emptying - I LEAVE the camera to take at least 6-10 secs "rest" till I start the next shot. I noticed that relying only on those stars that show the buffer capacity is not a good deal. If I shoot a sequence and then start the next one EXACTLY after I see those stars disappearing - I'm getting either magentas or lower frame count (for example 310 or even 305).

And not a rule, but more of a warning to those that are not used to work with so much crop:
5) I would really need a feature that takes the whole image and resizes it to 1280x720 like the normal movie mode is doing. It is a huge pain that I can't use RAW to take an awesome 17mm wide shot of that deserted beach near my city. I hope it is possible and that it won't take too much time or/and effort for the ML guys to figure it out. It will be SUPER beneficial!!!

Then again - THANK YOU MAGIC LANTERN FOR UNLOCKING ALL THESE INSANE STUFF FOR US!!! For me it's literally "magic" what I can do with such a cheap camera.

Those are good rules to follow especially the note about letting clients know about data loss/reshoots. I had to run back to Tuesday's location to reshoot some exteriors this afternoon as I lost all the RAW lips I'd shot due to corruption.

The 720p is great especially to upconvert or for web but the crop kills me too. I've been mostly shooting at the 1728 and just hoping for the best. Today's stuff came out great with minimal Magenta on the 95mbs card. I probably should heed your advice about waiting 6-10 seconds and was trying to wait at least 3 or 5.

Maybe the resolution you want to use doesn't give a big difference.
Look at the whole list I made:

All tests @25FPS.

SD-card: Lexar 16GB 60MB/s
1280 x 720 px 16:9       275 frames
1280 x 704 px 1.85:1    295 frames
1280 x 640 px  2:1      346 frames
1280 x 592 px  2.20:1   420 frames
1280 x 544 px  2.35:1   524 frames
1280 x 544 px  2.39:1   524 frames
1280 x 512 px  2.50:1   630 frames
1280 x 488 px  2.67:1   734 frames
1280 x 432 px  3:1         1188 frames

1728 x 922 px 16:9         108 frames

SD-card: SanDisk 32GB 95MB/s
1280 x 720 px 16:9        315 frames
1280 x 704 px 1.85:1     335 frames
1280 x 640 px  2:1       486 frames
1280 x 592 px  2.20:1    516 frames
1280 x 544 px  2.35:1    659 frames
1280 x 544 px  2.39:1    659 frames
1280 x 512 px  2.50:1    791 frames
1280 x 488 px  2.67:1    1078 frames
1280 x 432 px  3:1       2317 - 2118 - 2283 - 2079 - 2215 frames

1728 x 922 px 16:9           108 frames
Thanks. That is at 25fps where I shoot at 24 but according to your tests I could get an extra second at 720p and 2 extra seconds at 1.85. Hmm sounds like it would be worth it to me...

Due to the fact that there two types of 60D's, I'm unable to make an 'automagically' end of a 960xwhatever recording.
Worse, the RAW's can't be processed either!
To be exact, the 60D's build in SD-interface delimits the write speed, not the card. And with 1280x432px (3:1) I'm getting twice as much frames with 95MB/s in contrast to 45MB/s!

All tests @25FPS.
SD-card: Lexar 16GB 60MB/s
1280 x 432 px  3:1         1188 frames

SD-card: SanDisk 32GB 95MB/s
1280 x 432 px  3:1       2317 - 2118 - 2283 - 2079 - 2215 frames

Furthermore in case of a faster card your RAW Gigs will copy faster to your computer!

Hmm. I've been holding off opening the 95mbs card I ordered as most people were saying it doesn't make a difference. If it helps at 720p it would be worth it though.

Just remember that you are all Alpha testing something & it isn't the finished article by a long shot!
Read the threads for 600D & 550D, as there is some useful info in them that could answer some of your questions.

Also, this thread will help a great deal with reducing sensor noise when using smaller crops of 960x544 etc...

Oh I understand. Doesn't mean it isn't frustrating to lose work. Risk and rewards for sure.

So I was referred to this thread by the ML twitter to fix what appears to be corrupted RAW files. Anyone know if this works? I see that there are a ton of FFFFFFF hexs at the end of my file but also sporadic patches throughout the file. Fixing the end enables me to run through the process of converting and then to lightroom but it's just Digital pink noise in LR.

Once I got that problem to but solved updating from source, so now you have some dng that can't be opened and not anymore the raw file?

btw
/doing last test and refinement to 0.11

I still have the RAW files. Just no matter how many times I run them the dng's won't import anywhere.

I'm not sure to have understood right, I suppose was ML making wrong raw and not raw2dng
I'm not really sure where the problem is lying. All I know is that I took a new clip and it was fine in the current raw2dng.

Will upload a new app with the last raw2dng bin with vertical banding in a few hours
Have you updated ML since last week?

Thanks. Hopefully that will help. I used the build from 5/31 on Monday and didn't catch the newest version before shooting yesterday. Just uploaded the newest build and shot a test with no problems. Go figure. I wonder if there is a way to reheader the info from yesterday?

Of course I trust Magic Lantern a little too much after my tests on Monday and shot some paid work yesterday with it. And now I can't any of my RAW files to read after they are converted to DNGs. Are they corrupted? Any way to salvage these? I have about 50 clips that won't open anywhere. Tried on PC and Mac. Same issues. Any solution would be a lifesaver at this point.

Last week and monday I had no issues with RAW. Shot a video yesterday and now Lightroom/Photoshop won't read any of the files. Is this a raw2dng problem that I might fix by reconverting from a PC instead of the mac side? I'm using .10

You forgot to mention the resolution you used!

Oops. 1280x720. Uploading my test now to Vimeo. Looks fantastic. Not quite the 5Dmk3 at 1080 but still fantastic. I ordered a 95mbs Sandisk for overnight delivery. Well see if that helps get the resolution up or if it's a camera limitation.

Just did some quick 60D testing around the office. Importing the footage now so I'll show the tests. Was able to record about 300 frames at a time on a 32gb 30mbs Sandisk. Is anyone having any luck with higher sizes on the 45mbs or 90mbs? They are having a sale today so I'll pick up a higher speed if it means longer record times.

Share Your Videos / RAWesome in Big Sur Mark3 video

Here is our video from our RAW testing last weekend. Turned out great but post workflow was such a headache I don't know how much I'd shoot with it consistently. Still makes me want to get a Mark 3.

http://vimeo.com/67422760

For memorial day and my birthday we headed down the coast to Big Sur for a weekend of camping. It also provided some great backdrops for some testing of the new Magic Lantern RAW release for the Canon 5dmkIII.
Shot with the May 22nd nightly build on a KomputerBay 128gb that didn't give us a high enough Write rate for 1080p so we shot mostly at 1920x880 with some 960 scattered in. We also tested some Macro shots with the punch in.
Lenses used: Zeiss 50 Makro ZE, Zeiss 25/2.0 ZE, Zeiss 85/1.4 ZE, Takumar 28/3.5
The grade was to try and achieve a filmic look in Lightroom using the VSCO film looks. I know it's not the best to see the quality out of the RAW but I wanted to process it the same way I do stills. Ran into a few color issues where CA and banding got nasty but overall it graded well. The grain looks very film-like to my eyes but the cast is a tad too magenta.

Finally got the post processing done on our shooting last weekend. Video looks great but the post workflow is a headache. Will really use this for a shot or two per shoot but never everything unless the clients are paying for it.

Check it out and see the details in the description: http://vimeo.com/67422760
