This is fantastic news! Thanks to chris_overseas, A1ex, and everyone else who helped make this happen!

No one has some hints for me? It seems a bit crazy to reinvent the wheel.
Chris, you've made this offer a number of times since early November. Clearly it's been seen, and those with the relevant knowledge have decided not to respond. Seems rude to me that they haven't responded at all -- you're after all not simply complaining about wanting some new feature, but willing to do the work, which the administrators and devs are always encouraging complainers to do -- but perhaps they have their reasons for not even telling you 'no'. Maybe try sending a PM.

Good luck! Hope someone who can help you responds.

I would like to try and update ML so it runs with firmware 1.2.3 on the 5D Mark III. My understanding is that I need to do the following:

  • Obtain a ROM dump of the 1.1.3 and 1.2.3 firmwares.
  • Load these dumps into ARMu.exe.
  • For each address is platform/5D3.113/stubs.S, find the equivalent address in the 1.2.3 firmware by comparing the disassemblies.
  • Create a new platform/5D3.123/stubs.S file using these newly discovered addresses.
  • Update various build/compile scripts as required.
I'm new to this however and I've hit a wall at the very first step. How do I get a dump of 1.2.3? I tried updating my 5D3 to 1.2.3 and then flashing 5D3-113-bootflag.fir. Perhaps not surprisingly, this dies with the following error: "Update file error. Please check the memory card and reload the battery and try again". I've also tried to run both the scripts here: http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/Canon_Basic/Scripts/Dumper but nothing is produced. I'm not convinced the scripts even run. As instructed I set the "SCRIPT" string in the boot sector (using EOScard) and created the appropriate script.req and extend.m files - is there something else I need to do too or does Canon Basic scripting not work on DSLRs, just the point'n'shoots? Can I perhaps extract and decrypt the dump from Canon's 5D300123.FIR file instead? If I need to create my own .fir file for 1.2.3 to dump the ROM, how would I go about doing that - presumably it needs signing? Can I make an autoexec.bin to dump it? Is there another trick I can try?

Obviously various developers here know how to get a ROM dump but I haven't been able to find this process documented in detail anywhere. Any hints would be greatly appreciated!

Appealing to Pelican, coutts, 1%, a1ex, g3gg0, or anyone else who can help me learn more about this.

Really nice! Some beautiful images! I'd be interested in knowing where you did your color grading and editing. Thanks.

does anyone know if they will update ML to work with the latest FW from canon?
I am at the latest and heard that you cannot go back to the 113 ver....?
I am desperate to try it out but don't want to damage anything.....
I am a virgin to ML and not willing to fry my MKIII to just test it out...
Tobias
No idea when ML will move to 1.2.3. I've downgraded to 1.1.3 and so have many others on this forum. I've had no problems, nor to the best of my knowledge has anyone on this forum ever reported a problem from their downgrading to 1.1.3. I go straight to import seq in PPro CC and edit.

I'm on CS6, don't have CC. I've been playing with workflows with DNGs (and sometimes proxies) based on a dynamic link between AE and PP. I'd like to try fitting Speedgrade CS6 into the picture, which is one reason I'm interested in the PSD option if it can preserve the raw data or something close to it. Since my computer is no beast, it would also be nice if it made for easier editing in PP than with the dynamic link to AE. I haven't been following the discussions about CC closely, but are you using PSDs because the recent update to PPro CC didn't end up supporting DNGs like people hoped? I'm guessing you can still dynamically (or directly?) link to AE and edit DNGs (or proxies) in PP. Is using PSDs easier or better for you than that?

I have been going raw to dng to acr to psd. would be nice to go raw to psd.  :)

Interesting. What's your workflow once you have the PSDs? What advantage(s) do you see them as giving you?

my thoughts went to unicode/ascii (chracterencoding) and something like that. maybe it cant read/write/find the proper file because of differences in right that. wrong character-encoding leads to "FileNotFound". i didnt had such an issue, so finally cant help by now, but maybe "our" worldwideweb can.. have to search and read about it.

regards chmee

FYI, I updated to .NET 4.5.1 and now raw2cdng works!  :)

chmee, yes, although I do pretty much everything in English on my computer(s), all are enabled for Hebrew characters as well, I have Microsoft Office Hebrew language packs installed in them, etc. Could this be a factor?

Yes, I did try running the app from the root directory of a different drive, but without success.

chmee, I really appreciate your help, but I think I'm going to give up for now. Creating the empty file as you suggested didn't work. I tried the app on two other computers running Windows 7 64-bit in my house, and weirdly it immediately crashed each time on those too, even when running it as an administrator. I haven't had this problem with any other program/app/tool so there's something quirky going on. I Googled "System.IO.FileNotFoundException crash" and found lots of descriptions of problems similar to what I'm experiencing, with people being advised to try all sorts of things which don't work (including reinstalling .net 4.0), but I couldn't find anything I wanted to try, partly because I don't want to spend more time on this now. So I think I'll just periodically retry the app (e.g., after Windows updates) in hope that the problem has gone away, but for the time being I guess I'll be sticking entirely with DNGs. Thanks again.

(A) raw2cdng.settings.json wasn't in the folder you asked me to check. Unfortunately, however, I don't know how to create an empty file. :( (I did some Googling but found too many different answers mixed with too much uncertainty.) Can you tell me how to do that? Is it done from a command prompt?

(C) Since I sometimes just drag files out of WinRAR without properly extracting them, I tried again making sure I extracted it properly, and had the same problem.

EDIT: chmee, I saw your post following this one (#397), and I'll reply soon. Want to do some reading and testing, and I'm a bit busy now to do it. Thanks!

Yes, I had tried running as an administrator. No difference.

Not sure this will help, but these are "problem details" I can view when I get the error message:

Well, chmee, thanks anyway for trying. Looks like there may be something quirky going on with my computer.

(1) Do you have .net4.0 installed?
(2) what OS? Windows-core or emulation/virtual system?
(as every time: more information leads to more accurate answer)

Hi chmee,
(1) I have "Microsoft .NET Framework 4 Client Profile" installed
(2) Windows 7 64 bit (core, I suppose, since it's not running on another OS)

Hi, I'm trying to get started with raw2cdng, and can't get past the first step. I downloaded 1.4.6, extracted it to my desktop, double-clicked, and immediately get the message "raw2cdng has stopped working. Windows can check online... etc." I downloaded 1.3 and the same thing happened. I also tried dragging a raw file onto it like with raw2dng and got the same result. I must be making some dumb mistake. Can someone please tell me what I'm doing wrong?

I recently installed ML in my 5D3 (yes I set the bootflag! :o) and am thinking about workflows. I have Production Premium CS6 and have found some really nice ideas in this forum for workflows with ACR, AE, and PP, using dynamic link (which I've tried and liked), and also various workflows with Resolve (which I haven't tried yet but likely will).

I couldn't find much about workflows with SpeedGrade CS6, however. Since I have it in Production Premium CS6 (and won't be upgrading to CC anytime soon), I'd be really happy to hear about anyone's experiences -- positive or negative -- trying to fit SpeedGrade CS6 into their ML raw workflow.

Thanks!

Camera-specific Development / Re: Canon 700D / T5i

Disabling the bootflag is very easy, one line of code in fact. The problem arises because of how risky it is to disable it, the devs don't want people claiming ML bricked their camera and so to prevent this the ability has been taken away for now until a more reliable way has been found.

a1ex should be able to create a .fir to disable the bootflag safely.

This seems entirely speculative to me (aside from the fact that the bootleg can be disabled with one line of code).

Why has the "problem not arisen" with any other camera besides the 5D3 (and now possibly the 700D too)?

Why were .fir files for disabling the bootflag created in the earliest stages for all other cameras, but with the 5d3 it's been five months and more than five threads with polite inquiries from numerous people to which the response has been pretty much utter silence?

Would it be "feeding the trolls" for A1ex to say whether or not there are special concerns with preparing a .fir for the 5D3 (and possibly the 700D too)?

That would be a bit pathetic. I give A1ex more credit than that, and suspect he has more serious reasons for having waited this long with the 5D3, unlike the other cameras, and for deciding not to respond to any inquiries about the issue. Still, I think he needs to find a way to say something about it (and possibly the 700D too).

I am not able to disable the bootflag on my T5I.

You need to ask the devs whether it's even possible. There have been some suggestions that it may not be. Good luck.

If this delay is not tolerable you have to reset the flag.

RenatoPhoto (if I understood him correctly) recently wondered whether the 700D/T5i might have the same problem as the 5D3 -- namely, that there's no safe way to disable the bootflag:

(More here: http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=8355.0 )

Do you or anyone else know whether there is a way to disable the bootflag on the 700D/T5i?

General Chat / Re: CANON INTERVIEW

Thanks, very interesting! The topic of ML raw on the 5D3 comes up at around 25:07. The Canon guy doesn't seem the least bit upset: "Yeah, we know some people are enjoying this [laughs] on our camera...but Canon is officially...we would like to stick with uncompressed raw with C500."

Perhaps because it goes against their maintenance policy, in other words words Canon supports their own upgrade but won't endorse old software. The way I read it is that Canon cannot restore the old software for you.

But they don't say you can't go down, e.g., from 1.2.3 to 1.2.1, or from 1.1.3 to 1.1.2. It's the jump from 1.2.0 or higher to 1.1.3 or lower that they say is problematic.

The one thing I've heard is that downgrading to 1.1.3 has caused the AF microadjustment bug to appear for some people who didn't have it previously.

timetravelor and hjfilmspeed: Great to hear that neither of you have noticed any problems. Have you ever checked to see if your AFMA settings switched to -8?
