I have developed an app for Android with specific use of ML on Canon DSLRs -- a director's viewfinder.

Now preparation for the shoot is easier -- you can scout locations using only your Android phone, without carrying your camera with you.
The app gives you the exact framing of 5dM3 or cropped APS-C cameras.

The app has some non-intrusive ads, but is absolutely FREE.

Thank you for the confirmation. 50d seems like the ideal "affordable" RAW camera to those who can handle beta testing. Also seems like the perfect upgrade from my t2i\t3i thanks!!

Hi there. I know about the restrictions, but  I have always had GD on with Histo and recording was continuous in my case. I also turned on Ficus Peaking, and it seems to record OK.

Regarding HDMI out: it does work, however it stresses the processor and it may influence recording. This was confirmed by 1% after I had numerous problems with a Lilliput monitor connected. In my case I had broken frames and switching off the RAW mode, incidentally recording in h.264...

No. First I've heard of it and as the article says it's just a rumor and there are plenty of those flying around at the moment. I might have been referring to our Cinelog camera profile update that was just released?!

I have found ACR to be best when reducing moire and ISO noise. Lately, I've been doing it in Lightroom since it has the same engine and better handling of multiple DNGs.

Resolve can be pretty bad when it comes to debayering non-crop video from the 50D. It leaves mosaic artifacts in highlights. You can reduce moire quite well in ACR using the adjustment brush or if it's really bad on some shots I would suggest using Raw Therapee with AMaZE demosaicing and output to 16bit TIFF.

After Resolve 10 release, I re-rendered lots of footage that in AE showed unacceptable aliasing. In 90% of cases, aliasing was significantly reduced. And I don't shoot cropped.

Camera - > RawMagic -> AE (ProRess 422) - > Premiere -> Export

I did color correcting w/ Adobe Camera RAW in After Effects. Thanks!

Try de-bayering in Davinci Resolve. That ugly moire on the building will be less prominent. AE produces a lot of artefacts.

Not at all, man. I'm glad to make a tiny contribution to the big ML thing. Cannot promise a thorough test, but I am certainly willing to test against my workflow.

You are right, the second glitch is gone -- and the "ugly" bw picture indeed replicates the crop mode view. Amazing!
The only drawback is that when I start recording in cropped mode the bw picture on the screen is renewed approx at 1 FPS rate. VERY slow. If you need more detailes about this, I can shoot a small video. Let me know.

And thanks for your efforts! (I am a fan of TL and it will be great to bring its benefits into ML homeland).

The problem remains.

In short: after switching off and on the RAW MLV recording, GD (partly) desappears during recording, even though GD is ON.

The upper info and black stripe is gone, below is only waveform, no info.

Sorry, I wanted to help but I'm not too much knowledgeable in these commit things. 

I'll just download the latest build and test again.

What nightly version did you try? (write down the changeset from the Help tab in menu).

Thanks for your testing report!  However, I'm not sure I understand your steps....

Did you start with a completely clean install of the nightly (e.g., no old settings files)?  Do you see different behavior when using TL?

Sorry if I was not clear.

INITIAL STATE: absolutely clean nightly after card formatting.

Turn on the camera. Turn on RAW recording with GD Allow. Several recordings go fine.

Then just switch recording from RAW to Standard. Recordings go fine as well, nothing changes.

Then I switch back to RAW recording (1584x892), making sure GD is set to Allow.

Now the GD during recording of RAW video starts to disappear. At first all texts and GD is gone, then the stripes disappear, so that while recording you do not have HD aspect ratio. It's a clean screen basically, with a camera sign and timer.

And yes, TL behaves the same way (( But if I use raw_rec not mlv_rec, this problem does not exist.

Another glitch: when zoomed x5 the screen flickers, when x10 it is ok, Have to turn zoom x5 off to avoid that. TL has slightly different glitch -- it is not flickering, it just goes b/w with an ugly low resolution, only x5 zoom.

Use the MLV module. You can tag .mlv in camera ....

thanks for your invo about the MLV workflow. I just tried it today.

MLV Converter is a very good program. Didn't find any problems in the workflow.

However I couldn't find how to tag clips in-camera. I was clicking the "free text" but somehow didn't figure out how to actually enter the tag.

Could you please help, as always? )

UPDATE Also in your latest TL build GD suffers in MLV recording. Keeping GD On, if you record MLV video, everything is fine. But then switch RAW off, record some h.264, and switch RAW back on, making sure GD is ON. GD will be deteriorated -- some info is gone, the black upper stripe is gone.... raw_rec behaves well in this regard.

Because of the new memory backend, the nightlies were just rebuilt.  As long as you download the nightly that says "Built on: 2014-02-13 15:16:33 -0500" (or the equivalent time in a different time zone), you will have all of the recent changes.

Sorry, it was my mistake. I checked the .zip file - that is it! I wrote earlier about the GD.

Definitely!  In particular, you should test out tonight's nightly builds, once they are built (will be magiclantern-v2.3.NEXT.2014Feb14.50D109.zip), because I added two important commits:

• TL backport: display filters (ML grayscale preview, anamorphic, etc.) work now
• mlv_rec: global draw is restored after finishing a recording

But test everything else too!

Yep I was testing it today.

Regarding the Global Draw. It tends to disappear after 3-5 recordings. I was able to reproduce the problem like this:

- turn on the camera \ LiveView
- first recording
- turn off the RAW recording in the movie menu
- recording "Standard" to .mov. Global Draw is ok
- turn back on RAW recording in the movie menu. now when you push Rec button you have 2 black stripes on the top and the bottom, BUT ALL INFO IS GONE
- on the next RAW recording, even black stripes are gone, visible is the whole screen with aspect ratio 4:3 or whatever

This is repeatable.

It's not exactly a "new" port, but after a few weeks of unavailability, the 50D is supported again in Magic Lantern!  I'll be maintaining it, such as fixing bugs and also backporting remaining improvements from Tragic Lantern.  Nightly builds are available again from http://builds.magiclantern.fm/#/, so I encourage all interested parties to download the latest builds and provide feedback.  You can add issues on Bitbucket or just comment here.  Thanks!

My guess is that this will probably be it.  While I can't rule out the discovery of additional levers to manipulate, it seems rather unlikely.

right. is this going to be integrated in the future TL / ML nightly / stable release?

The latest data shows small improvements to dynamic range: ~0.25 EV at ISO 100, and about half that at higher ISOs.

btw, I'm doing CC'ing of the footage I shot for a commercial for a major financial institution of Ukraine. I'm extremely pleased with the gradebility. keying, refinement of shadows -- everything is quite astonishing. even considering I was shooting at 320 ISO.

What resolution were you raw_rec recording in?
Non-crop or 3x crop? What frame rate?

it was 25FPS, no-crop 1586x8... (standard max res for 50D)

@dogmydog, I'm using Komputerbay x1000 32GB and 64Gb

No, I remember they shouldn't be.

BUT I totally remember that I didn't use to have these issues when there was no mlv_pay module loaded..... maybe it is to blame? I'll test....

I have the latest December TL build by Andy.

I only have ideas, not sure about them.

Maybe it's overheating or connecting the external monitor. For some reason the raw_rec module just disappeared. More than that, when I reboot the camera, it doesn't load. The next reboot it's loaded... I had the raw turning off issue earlier on another body -- is it happening only to me? Maybe I do something wrong...

I'll try to push the camera to reproduce the problem. Will give images or video if I happen to catch that.

Just finished my paid shoot. It was a little bit of nightmarish...

The camera constantly switched off raw mode and starting recording h264. I was not successful to timely catch that, so some frames were shot totally in h264 in every take ((

The temperature was all the time 45-48C degrees. A lot of errors.

On the exteranl HDMI display there was a black bar near the bottom of the screen -- didn't know where it got...

Still love 50D, but don't know how to deal with these issues. They were totally unpredictable...
