That sounds great Poromaa, but I've never used Davinci Resolve and still getting my head around FCP X. Bit of a newbie ! :)

Does FCPX support cinema dng's ?

I must admit, I like the way Adobe Camera Raw works and can make the frames look as I'm primarily a photographer. I heard that ACR can cause flicker if the sliders are heavily adjusted, so i'm being careful.

I've installed and then mounted the files using MLVFS, but don't think i can do much with them without using Resolve is there ?

Advice is much appreciated as this is a bit of a learnig curve for me. :)

Sorry Markus, you've lost me a little. I'm not familiar with 'mounting' mlvfs ? Can you tell me again in real simple language ? What are mlvfs etc ? :)

I'd prefer the use Final Cut Pro X as i know it pretty well. Is there no way to speed up my workflow other than using Resolve ?

I like the speed of the MLRawViewer .mov output, but can't quite get the colours i'm after using the different log settings.

Bit of a newbie so please elaborate. ;)

I'm converting the .mlv files to dng via MLRawViewer. Then i convert the .dng in Adobe Camera Raw to upsize to 1920 x 1080 with low sharpening and output as tif or jpg. Then i make an Image Sequence in Quicktime Pro 7 as ProRes HQ or 4444 and import into FCP X.

I don't have Resolve, After Effects or Premiere so need to use FCPX. ;)

Is that a decent workflow ? It's hard to keep up with latest advances in Magic Lantern raw.

Incidentally, I'm using the VAF 5D2b - not the original version 5D2a. The 'b' version is pretty damn good with wide angle zooms - even up to 16mm with just a little image softening.

That's great guys ... many thanks ! Incredibly helpful as alwys. :)

Think I need to splash out on a 5D3.  :)

Out of interest ... what is raw playback like on the 5D3 as it's pretty choppy on the 5D2 ?

Hi all !

I'm currently using a Canon 5D II with a VAF-5D2 anti aliasing filter for Magic Lantern raw video. Aliasing is still apparent, especially when converting to .dng and tif output.

I was wondering if the anti-aliasing and moire were any better with the Canon 5D III ? They are a pretty good price now so was not sure whether to upgrade or not.

What are people's experience with aliasing and moire on Canon 5D3 using ML raw video ? Is it likely to be any better than my Canon 5D2 with the VAF fitted ?

All thoughts appreciated ...

Do you guys find the SanDisk 64 GB Extreme Pro much faster than the Komputer Bay 64 GB 1000x ?

I'm getting about 25 secs max, 1856 x 1044 PAL 25fps with Komputer Bay 64 GB on my 5D2 with Latest Nightly Build ...

Thanks for the speedy reply ... this is all new to me so appreciate your input and any advice. :)

However, my MLRawviewer Pro Res 444 files never look as sharp as the Lightroom files - even when i add "Sharpen" at 2.5 (default) in FCPX.

Any suggestions ?

ACR and Lightroom seems to also get rid of Chromatic Aberrations better ... Would you agree ?

I'm still tring to find the best way to process .mlv raw video files to edit in Final Cut Pro X ...

Like many of us, after using MLRawviewer (which is awesome!),  I love the ability to edit the exported .dng files in Adobe Lightroom ... so it's a shame to have to swap from one app to another.

I know that in the past (until version LR 5 i think), Adobe used to support 'Slideshow Templates' and we could output timelapse sequences (or video files) with 24, 25 or 30fps using LR Timelapse templates.

Sadly, the video files were mpeg4, so quality suffered. Also LR Timelapse & Lightroom 5 no longer support the older slideshow templates, but in concept it seems a good idea.

What is the likelihood of Adobe returning support for these 'Slideshow Templates' ... idally with Pro Res output and option to attach the .mlv WAV sound files too ? Do Adobe listen to feature requests ? If so ... maybe we should all suggest it !? :)

It's possible to currently output high quality Pro Res files using .dng's within the fabulous "LR Timelapse" http://lrtimelapse.com/, but in an ideal world we'd just use Lightroom or Adobe Camera Raw for the entire conversion process.

What are your thoughts ?

I do have a screen grab of Lightroom 3.6 that shows 'Slideshow Template' support but couldn't work out how to upload image from desktop ! Please help ! ;)

Ha ! And Hawaii Five-0 is currently shot with Canon 5D2. Love that program and wondered what they shot it with.

What an amazing camera ... :D

Thanks again guys ... But need to keep costs down and weight.

Looks like there may be a new Canon 5D in the offing soon ... According to Canon Rumours ;)

http://www.canonrumors.com/2015/01/eos-5d-mark-iii-replacement-talk-cr2/

Maybe then the 5D3's will be half price ! lol

If the rumour is true (it's CR2 so apparently quite reliable source), is it likely to be 4k or perhaps the perfect camera for ML raw video. Who knows ... but I'd love 53mp for my stills. ;)

Wow ... thanks to you all for such fast response !

Think I'll need to raid the piggy bank ;)

Hi !

I'm loving ML raw video and appeciate all the development being put in ... so thanks. :)

I'm currently using an old Canon 5D2 but am thinking about upgrading to a Canon 5D3. Can you answer these questions :

1 ) I understand the 5D3 records full HD with ML - but is this continuous on a fast card ?

2 ) Playback on the 5D2 is obviously a bit jittery and has skipped frames. Is playback smooth on the 5D3 due to faster processor etc ?

3 ) Does 5D3 playback also have sound or is this a possible development for future (sorry to ask !  :P) ?

4 ) I have heard rumours that there is a newer 5D3 firmware ? i'm guessing this doesn't work with the ML Nightly Builds atm, so can i install older firmware on a new 5D3 if it ships with updated firmware ?

5 ) Is the raw video on 5D3 generally that much better than my 5D2 is currently using ?

All advice and input would be much appreciated !

Thanks in advance ... ;)

Raw Video / Re: Newbie to 5D2 Raw Video !

Wow, that's really helpful advice ... thanks again ! :D

So Final Cut Pro X can import cdng files that have been converted using MLRaw Viewer ...

Sorry to ask, but how do i import these cdng clips into FCPX ? Do i need to make a 'compound clip' or something ? I'm really new to all this so please excuse my naivity ! ;)

Once imported, are cdng's as gradeable in FCPX as the raw files would be in Adobe Raw etc ? This is a huge time saver if so !:D

Raw Video / Re: Newbie to 5D2 Raw Video !

Hi again Red Deer City ...

I've had a good close look at your videos - all incredibly helpful so thanks again.

Can i ask why you say to not use Quicktime 7 to generate the quicktime .mov file from the jpgs or tifs ? It seems easier than making a compound clip in Final Cut Pro X.

Also ... out of interest ... If i upgrade to a Canon 5D3 from 5D2, will the ML Playback of .mlv files be any better in camera or is the 5D2 still as good as the newer model ?

Appreciate your knowledge !

Raw Video / Newbie to 5D2 Raw Video !
October 26, 2014, 09:53:21 AM
Hi ! I'm a relative newbie so please excuse my lack of knowledge ...

I'd like to try recording Raw video with my Canon 5D2.

I've read most of the forum posts, but as raw video develops it's hard to keep on top of things.

What's the latest on recording video with 5D2 ? Which nightly build is best to use ? Can i record audio at same time using MLV or is that the realms of the 5D3 ?

I'd like to use Final Cut Pro X for post processing ... So i guess i convert the raw video files using Raw2Dng then use Quicktime Pro to create Pro Res clips ? If not, what alternative workflow is recommended with 5D2 ?

Thanks in advance ... :D

Hi !

I'm fairly new to Magic Lantern, so excuse me if this can already be done ...

I'm using ML on my Canon 5D2 to generate 7 frame exposure brackets for HDR spherical panoramas.

I have selected Mirror Lock Up and it allows a two second delay between frames, but it would be great to have three secs or longer delay to eliminate all camera shake when mirror goes up.

My spherical panorama head causes slight vibration and a longer delay option would really help ...

Is this possible ?

Also, is it possible to shoot the exposure bracket range in the same sequence as standard Canon firmware (on my 1Ds3) - Ie : Exposure at 0 and -,-,-, then +,+,+ ?

Thanks so much !  :D

General Help Q&A / Re: Noob advice on Bitrate in h.264
August 30, 2013, 05:21:14 PM
Ciao Walter :)

But what does that actually mean ? Higher bitrate means more resolution or more colour depth etc ?

When using ML and h.264, do most users set higher bitrate to maybe 1.5x-2x 'normal' ?

When playing with raw video i'm shooting about 65mb/s ... so that's a hollova' difference !

General Help Q&A / Noob advice on Bitrate in h.264
August 30, 2013, 09:49:36 AM
Hi !

What are the advantages of increasing the bitrate in ML h.264 to 2X or 3X default bitrate ?

Is it just more colour info in video files which helps with grading ? Or are there any other advantages of selecting faster bitrate for h.264 video on 5D2 ?

I use a Komputer Bay 64Gb 1000X card ... i'm guessing this is ok for 3X bitrate recording ?

Sorry to ask such a basic question but would appreciate your advice ...  ;)

Thanks reddeercity :)

Not tried importing in to Compressor 4 but will give it a go.

I've been using QT7 Image Sequence and have played with MPEGStreamchip by squared5.com - but neither can batch process folders of tifs (or jpgs).

Can i batch folders in Compressor 4 ?

If not ... what does everyone else do to batch process the folders of images on Macs ?  ;)
#72
Thanks for your reply reddeercity !  :)

I only have Photoshop CS6 and Lightroom 3.6 and prefer to edit in Final Cut Pro X as i've bought it !  :D

So can i just import the huge number of 25 fps tif files into FCPX and convert to a video file that way ? I'm not too familiar with FCPX and when i tried it, my system seemed to hang due to all the image files.

Any advice is always appreciated !

Thanks in advance ...

Feature Requests / Video Output in Raw2Dng
August 26, 2013, 09:50:51 PM
Hi !

Just wondered if it would be quicker (and possible), to output a lower res / quality video file when processing video in raw2dng ?

I primarily use the ProResHQ output just to see the video content and not for any other reason - and it seems to take ages to compress the high quality video file.

Be nice to have the option to chose - although I know i'm asking a LOT !

You guys are fantastic to have achieved what you have and just thought i'd give some feedback to try and help streamline the functionality.

Keep up the great work !  ;)

Thanks so much bnvm - incredibly precise and helpful answer !  ;) :D ;D

Raw Video / 5D2 Raw Video Resolution and Playback ?
August 26, 2013, 11:22:54 AM
Hi !

What is the best video resolution when recording raw video on Canon 5D2 ?

I see options for 1880 or 1872 for full HD - is one better than the other ?

Also - what is the best way to playback the raw video in camera ? The default playback function is slow due to slow frame rate - is this the best way to view what i've just recorded on camera or am i best to dial in different settings ?

Advice would be greatly appreciated ...  ;)
