I saw that when i searched the forum but I have the latest Eos Utility as just downloaded it a few days ago ...

I'll see what comes up Sean and look in to things a bit more. Thanks again. :)

I'm thinking of buying a new Canon 5D III and installing Magic Lantern for raw video etc. However, the latest Canon firmware is 1.3.3 and ML only works up to 1.2.3.

I also see that on the Canon website under download new firmware it states - "Once the EOS 5D Mark III camera is updated to Version 1.3.3, it cannot be restored to a previous firmware version (Version 1.0.7 through 1.2.3)."

Does this mean that if i buy a new Canon 5D3 i'll never be able to use Magic Lantern as there is no new firmware support ? If so, have Canon introduced this to stop ML from stealing sales of their C series video cameras etc ?

I know i'm not supposed to ask ... But what likelihood is there of ML support for 1.3.3 and future Canon 5D series - is it possible or is the firmware now 'locked' ?

Want to buy new 5D3 but only if it's got the amazing ML raw video support. :)

Thanks Ivan ... ;)

So my QT Movie file actually has a colour profile added if it shows "HD (1-1-1)" ? In which case i don't need to worry about any gamma shift ?

It's not too much of a problem atm but i do notice slight colour and gamma changes as I import and export from FCP X but that may just be normal.

Deaf Eye Jedi is pretty clued up ... I think he uses After Effects with the dngs. Unfortunatley I only have a trial copy of After Effects so it's not a permanent solution for me.

For me, there isn't a perfect solution yet ... although Resolve Lite is free and can also work. I just don't have time to get my head around another bit of software. :)

I'm with you on all that DeafEyeJedi ! ;)

I've just downloaded the Adobe Trials to see if they are any good - The Photoshop CC / Lightroom CC Bundle isn't a bad price but as soon as you stop paying you lose it. Welcome to a lifetime of debt - as if having a mortgage ain't bad enough ! lol :D

@ alejandro - I'm in the same boat. :)

I find the best results are to apply the VisionLog profile in ACR (Camera Profile) to get a nice flat image, then output the 1920 x 1080 tiffs and make Image Sequence with Quicktime 7 Pro. Then i edit the output ProRes 422 HQ in FCP X. Bit long winded but worth the effort.

There are better ways with Resolve or After Effects but I don't use either.

Alternatively I'm looking in to just outputting ProRes 4444 .mov files with C-Log profile straight from MLRawViewer. I adjust the histogram in the preview (so it looks healthy) and then just Export.

Not sure it's the best way to approach this, but it's very fast and gives better quality than h.264. :D

Hi !

I've started playing with the .mlv raw video on my Canon 5D II which creates max size 16:9 1856 x 1044 pixels.

I'm generating ProRes 4444 .mov files from MLRawViewer but ultimately i need to upsize slightly to full 1920 x 1080 HD.

What's the best way to do this and then sharpen the final output using FCP X ?

Am i best to set the 'New Project" to Custom 1080p / 1920 x 1080 pixels / 25fps and then just apply some Sharpen filter (2.5 default) on the clip and Export to Quicktime 1920 x 1080 or am i best to resize using the transform or crop tool then apply some sharpening then Export ?

Not sure of the 'right' way to do this so any advice would be appreciated. Thanks ... :)

Ahhh yes ... I saw that on http://www.colorgradingcentral.com/lututility for just $29.

Seems a good price and now playing with the trial demo in FCP X.

What do you think of the Osiris and Impulz profiles and LUTs - i'm itching to buy one but not sure i'll benefit. Atm i'm using Magic Bullet Looks.

Thanks again DeafEyeJedi ;) Will see how i get on with After Effects ! :)

Thanks for your kind offer jpjp ... but will wait to see what the replies are to DeafEyeJedi about colour with mlv.

I hadn't heard of it either until i read a blog yesterday.

It's a huge shame it doesn't support .mlv at the moment, but it does support the other ML raw format.

I've been playing with it and it seems to emphasise moire / aliasing - compared to ACR output or MLRawViewer mov output.

Apparently they're working closely with Digital Bolex.

Be amazing to just have one app that does everything for ML raw video. :D Download the trial and check it out ...

Still dead link ... Looks like it's now MLRawViewer ! :)

@ sijak - I can't see 1-1-1 in the profile file info. The .mov file was output from ACR 16 bit tiff files using QT7 Export to ProRes422HQ. I had applied VisionLog to the raw files in ACR to give a nice flat image.

Working this way, i guess any QT gamma shift is pretty irrelevant as the file will be graded anyway ?

@ DeafEyeJedi - I'm using a Mac and FCP X - so importing individual tiffs into FCPX is a slow process.

Any better ways known by anyone ? :)

I've just discovered Pomfort Cliphouse but the debayering isn't as good as ACR and it causes my raw clips to show lots more moire / aliasing.

Raw Video Postprocessing / Pomfort Cliphouse !
April 30, 2015, 08:26:57 AM
Hi everyone ...

Just wanted to make users aware of a great little app that seems to help my own ML Raw workflow.

It's called Cliphouse by Pomfort and is $49 / year or $129 for a permanent licence. Free 14 day trial too.

http://pomfort.com/cliphouse/

It allows for copying and back up of files, minor 'in app' editing / grading / adding flat profile and most importantly Export of cdngs and MLRawViewer dngs to various video formats such as ProRes 4444, h.264 etc. It's still necessary to generate the cdngs in the first place with MLRawViewer (or similar), but avoids the use of Resolve or After Effects.

I'm playing with it at the moment with the trial.  Not really heard it mentioned on the ML forum and it seems pretty cool. Saves me using Quicktime Pro 7 for Export and is pretty fast too. I think it can batch process clips too. :D

It does seem to occasionally crash, but if more of us used it and bought it, i imagine the stability and functionality would be improved more with updates.

Anyone got any recent experience with this - Jan 2015 onwards ?

Thanks Licaon-Kter ;)

So do MOV's have less leeway for grading than DNGs ?

I thought LMRawViewer exported MOV's in Prores 4444 so that means it's 12 bit and contains all the raw data ? Is that right ?

What about the MLRawViewer preview ? Should i get the image to look as normal as possible by chosing a default LOG ? What about the histogram - they always seem to look weighted to the left and dark. Should i increase Exposure in MLRawViewer until the preview image looks ok as then the highlights seem to blow out ?

Am i also right in saying that FCP X currently doesn't currently support the import of MLRawViewer dngs as an image sequence, so i need to use Quicktime Pro 7 to Export Tiffs or Jpgs ?

I just can't seem to find any solid info on all this and i've spent days reading through all the forum. As mentioned, I don't have AfterEffects or Resolve.
#41
Thanks Kharak ... I'll set the Picture Style in camera to Cinestyle then. :)

What about all the LOG settings in MLRawViewer ? Any idea which one i should choose when i output ? As i mentioned, some look really dark and the MLRawViewer histogram is weighted to the left.

Is this normal for LOG footage as the preview never looks good ? ;)

Am i best to output to MOV or to DNG ?
#42
That's what i wondered ... Thanks. I'll probably use neutral and turn the contrast right down and sharpness right up to help focus.

Any advice on the other questions ? This whole LOG thing is really confusing me ...

Raw Video Postprocessing / How to use MLRawViewer ?
April 29, 2015, 06:34:15 PM
Hi everyone !

Sorry to ask but I'm a photographer and a video newbie and i'm not sure how to use the fabulous MLRawViewer with my Canon 5D2 and ML Raw video.

I've downloaded the latest version 1.4.3 for Mac and read all the Read Me instructions.

I can open my .mlv files in MLRawViewer but they never seem to look like they should. When i cycle through the standard LOGs, some look better than others but many simply look dark, crushed blacks, high contrast etc. I know I can increase the exposure using the Up and Down cursor keys, but this seems to overexpose the preview image. Is this right as i'm dealing with a log file - not a traditional raw photo ?

Ideally i'd like a nice flat profile to work with, so i downloaded VisionLOG for ACR and the VisionLOG to Camera Neutral Rec709.cube files from VisionColor. I've also imported the VisionLOG to Camera Neutral Rec709.cube 3D LUT to MLRawViewer using the Shift L keys but the histogram looks underexposed. Should i now increase the exposure with the Up and Down keys to make the histogram look good or use the settings at default ?

Which LOG is best to output from ?

I'd like to export to Pro Res and grade in Final Cut Pro as I don't have Adobe Premiere or AfterEffects. I'm guesing this means first outputting 16Bit tiff files for each frame using Adobe Camera Raw and the VisionLog Camera Calibration / Profile ? Then making an Image Sequence with Quicktime Pro 7.

Also ... what camera profile should i load as a picture style for my 5D2 - ideally one that will show the full contrast range of the scene i'm shooting.

I've spent days reading through all the processing forum posts etc, but still trying to work out the best way to do all this. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks ... :)

@ Ali Oliya and DeafEyeJedi - I'm having the same problem loading LUT's into MLRawViewer 1.4.3 too.

I press Shift + L and chose the .cube LUT from my desktop, but it doesn't show or apply in MLRawViewer when i cycle through the various LOGS.

I'm running Mavericks 10.9.5.

Any other people experiencing this ? Is there something we're doing wrong ?

Alternatively to using Quicktime Pro 7, is it possible to use Photoshop to Render Out video without the gamma shift ?

I know i can simply go File / Open - select the first tiff file and at the bottom of window click "Image Sequence" and hit Open. Set the required frame rate and then this imports all the tiffs into Photoshop's video timeline. You can also add Audio Track in the Timeline window by clicking "Add Audio" next to the music icon. Then just go File / Export / Render Video. This then gives us the options of DPX / H.264 or Quicktime then click Render and it's quickly rendered.

Is this video qulaity good enough to grade as it's not ProRes ?

It's a huge shame that Photoshop doesn't recognise the dng files for the image sequence as it would avoid the need to output all thise big tiffs.

Is there any way round this ?

I'm also guessing you could set up a Photoshop Action to Batch proces lots of files overnight which would be helpful too.

Does this method avoid the dreaded Quicktime Pro 7 gamma shift problems ?
#46
I wondered about that as read about CineLog on the forum. ;)

So i just buy that for $50 and apply it in ACR as a dcp ?

Can i then apply a LUT in FCP X ? If so ... how ?!

All advice appreciated ! Thanks in advance.

I'm trying to create a fast and efficient workflow for my ML raw video.

Atm, I'm using the fabulous MLRawViewer 1.4.3 to convert the raw footage to .dng. I then export my dngs to 16 bit tiffs with VisionLog dcp profile added in Adobe Camera Raw. Finally, i create a ProRes HQ movie using Image Sequence via QTP7 - but it looks slightly lighter due to gamma shift.

Is there any way to stop this gamma shift ? I'm guessing the slight QTP 7 gamma shift is less of a problem since I'm using the VisionLog flat profile ?

I edit footage in FCP X as i don't have After Effects or Premiere and don't want to use Resolve as i'm a photographer and still getting my head around FCPX ! :)

Any advice appreciated.

Hi !

I'm getting to grips with MLV raw and using MLRawViewer 1.4.3 to process my files.

However, I see there are several differemt log settings to choose. Which one is best to edit in FCPX ?

Tbh, most of them look pretty dark or very flat but i assume this still allows a great deal of grading in FCPX as (i think) the files are ProRes 4444 ?

I'd like to use VisionLog cube LUT if there is one as i use the VisionLog ACR dcp profile when playing with dngs. Is this a good idea ?

Is MLRawViewer 1.4.3 also the latest version as not much seems to be happening lately.

I'm a bit confused about all this log and lut stuff so all advice is appreciated.

Hi !

I'm not that familiar with Lightroom as i only own version 3.6. However, i know Lightroom 3.6 could be used to output slideshows and i think it could output the movies as Pro Res video. It used to require a template for 24 , 25 or 30 fps.

This ability seemed to stop with Lightroom 4 and 5, but does anyone know if this is possible in the latest version of Lightroom 6 ?

I know that it can be done using LR Timelapse 4 Pro but i need to buy that and it would be great if it could all be done in Lightroom.

All information is of interest.

Great post and great video footage. Thanks for sharing (i only just seen it!) :)

I'm just experimenting with VisionLog ACR Profile. I see you changed several settings and then applied VisionLog profile at the end. Did you get any flicker from using ACR ? I guess since you didn't tweak the highlights and contrast etc that there were no problems ?

Also, what colour profile do you actually shoot in on camera - Standard / Portrait / Neutral etc ? I'd like to know how to get a camera profile that actually looks like the final footage so i can see the contrast etc.

When do you apply sharpening ? In ACR / in output or / in post ?

I'm a bit of a newbie so your suggestions and thoughts are of great interest.

Thanks :)
