Hello all. Thanks for all your help and support regarding Magic Lantern. I would like to start using 5.7k Anamorphic on professional shoots (short films). The difficulty is that unlike a traditional video camera, our ability to monitor the scene we're shooting is difficult. This makes framing difficult and racking focus as the subject approaches the camera or moves away from the camera.

Any workarounds for this?

Thanks for the great feedback all!

One other thing I noticed was the EXIF resolution data seems to change to low res for processed DNGs. The DNGs open fine in Lightroom (maybe Lightroom ignores the EXIF data), but open low res in Windows photo app.

I'd do this since Dual ISO is a bottleneck and I currently have to manually open a new instance of MLVApp per each MLV. It'd be nice to be able to automate this via batch processes. Command line functionality could facilitate that.

I thought of something:
What if MLV App could be used via command line similarly to cr2hdr?

It'd be great to spawn multiple sessions this way, passing in arguments such as file name, certain settings (dual iso, export settings, destination), and whether or not the processing should start immediately and close the app when complete, etc.

One could loop through all the MLVs in a folder, processing them with multiple instances of the App. Maybe one instance per CPU core or logical processor.

Would this be doable?

Thoughts?

How about an option to disable preview and use multiple threads if a user's session is full of dual iso clips. Could that be a strong case for allowing a clip to be processed per core/thread?

Interesting. Can you show a screenshot exporting a dual iso clip to cinemadng?

I'm just trying to determine any potential bottlenecks on my end. Maybe its the type of clips and my export format...

The app runs 100% multithreaded. If your CPU usage is very low, it must be a problem with your system.

Are you using Windows or Mac? If Windows, would you mind posting a screenshot of the Performance tab in Task Manager (Logical Processors Graph) while you're performing an export?

Regarding the multithreaded strategy, I think it'd be great to have a thread process a different MLV in the session. So if I load 10 MLVs into an export session, Maybe 10 CPU cores could process them all at once.

Thoughts?

I was curious about ways to possibly speed up export times.

It is possible that this application can be updated to be multi-threaded? When I look at my CPU usage, it is low and multiple cores/threads dont appear to be used.

Alternatively, I supposed one could open multiple instances of the app and process files in parallel.

Slow motion is achieved by using FPS override correct? Will I need to choose a proper resolution for 60fps instead of sticking with 3.3k?

Thanks Danne. I think I have things working well now. I'm actually able to keep Global Draw On for all modes in addition to Zebras, Focus Peak, Cropmarks, Histogram, and Waveform.
Preset is 3.3k 1:1 x5
12 bit
2.39:1

SD not overclocked
No card spanning
14-bit lossless
Preview - Framing
Crop Rec Preview auto mode (what does this do? lol)

I'm pretty happy with how things are working now and have done 30 second tests without any issues. Any recommended optimizations to make things even better? I like this!

Any tips for shooting slow motion? I've never accomplished that w ML before. What are some best practices?

Also, looks like the liveview is 5x and doesnt let me frame correctly however. Anyway to get a more accurate live view?

Hello all. I just made the large jump from a ML build from 2016 to the most recent one crop_rec_4k_mlv_snd_isogain_1x3_presets_2021Feb28.5D3123

Looks like things have changed quite a bit.

On the 2016 build, I would use Dual ISO in addition to crop mode for a resolution of 2560 x 1090
I had card spanning and was able to shoot continuously.
Monitoring was a challenge since Live View was gray, low quality, and not real time

Will the latest build help me solve some of these challenges?
Can I shoot Dual ISO, 4k continuous? Is card spanning deprecated and no longer available now? How do I get continuous shooting? (overclock module hasn't seemed to help. Maybe I'm doing something wrong)
Can I get a good monitoring situation? Live view and perfect framing of scene being shot?
How high up can I go in resolution these days and still use Dual ISO, without any bottlenecking of the camera or cards?

This is a really good feature option. This way we can expose properly before recording without having to disable things from the menu.

Any way we can get this into a nightly build?

That's an interesting point. I'd love to see side by side completed projects from a7s and 5d3 dual iso 2.5k.

I wonder what would look better and have more "apparent" dynamic range. Its hard to imagine any DSLR being better than a maxxed out 5d3, but I admit I havent used many other DSLRs. Only the GH2.

Any have sample a7s footage?

Good point but the quality of 1080p RAW is a no go for dual iso.

Too much aliasing...

2.5k crop mode is the way to go for dual iso.

Thanks for that info, dmilligan. And yes, allemyr. Lexar 1066x is the bees knees. I dont know why they have no peer. The 256GB 1200x Komputerbay cards are "branded" with a higher 1200x rating.

False advertising?

Forgive me if this is already public knowledge, but I believe I may have found a solution to a problem that has been bugging me for quite some time.

Until now, I had not been able to shoot in crop mode at 2.5k (2560x1090) Dual ISO for longer than 30-40 seconds. I would always get the frame skipped error after that time.

Today, however, I stumbled across a setting that lets me shoot continuously (as long as Im using fast enough cards with spanning turned on):



The bottleneck apparently lies with the histogram setting. Switching it to off apparently removes enough processor overhead or card throughput (or both?) to shoot continuously:

I eventually get a green icon. I dont think I've ever seen that before at this resolution. Especially with dual iso:



Thoughts? Anyone else experience this or is this a "new thing"?
