Here's my raw2cnd speed tests. My operating system is run off of a dedicated SSD.

Using Dual (RAID 0) 10,000rpm drives:

Average cndg frames processed a second - 59.2

Using SSD 5gbps drive:

Average cdng frames processed a second - 118.4

EOSHD, thanks for being self-motivated in solving a problem and making it worth your while. Nice job.

Magic Lantern devs, thank you (on a different order of magnitude) for pioneering vision and engineering the technology of Magic Lantern. I believe Entrepreneurs and Engineers are two very valid roles when scaling up an open source project.

I too am an entrepreneur, so I'm familiar with growing pains and resistance to an evolving project. My tendency is to smell an opportunity, accelerate interest around it (invited or not), and get things done. I package and sell the work of others.

EOSHD, I totally get it. Good initiative. Keep connecting people. :)

There's another way.  :)

For recovering highlights in a Resolve workflow, the best way is to convert your raw files to CinemaDNG and recover highlights while interpreting the footage.

Let's demystify this.

Step 1:

If you're using a mac, the best current option to convert RAW to CinemaDNG is using RAWMagic. Brilliant. Download it here: http://www.mediafire.com/download/tfur7aif2iic524/RAWMagic.dmg

Windows user? Use Raw2CDNG instead. Download it here: http://dl.phreekz.de/raw2cdng/raw2cdng.1.1.6.zip (If the link no longer works, go to http://www.phreekz.de/wordpress/2013/06/magiclantern-raw2cdng-cinema-dng/ - But watch out! IT'S IN DE LANGUAGE)

Step 2:

Use the conversion software to creat your CinemaDNG's. It's straight forward.

Step 3:

Import your cdng files into Resolve.

Step 4:

Go to the Color workspace. In the bottom left panel, click the movie camera button (Fourth from left).  This button adjusts "Camera Raw" settings.  Underneath is Master Settings pane.  Set the Decode Using to "Clip". Check the Highlight Recover box.

You also have a limited amount of adjustments (similar to ACR) such as color temp, tint, and exposure.

BOOM. You're ready to go wild.

Check out those LUTS! Big films are known to use Print LUTs to emulate film colors, and Juan is a best kept secret on the internet for high quality LUTS. They are free, and he has a great tutorial to help you install them.

Hey, nice tutorial Dave. I first starting watching your videos to understand shooting with DSLR and a year later i'm a self-employed director/cinematographer full time. Thanks for being inspiring.

Good to see that you're stoked on RAW shooting.

Dudes - what raw space should we be working in inside of Resolve with ML RAW? As in what RAW settings are best to use within Resolve? Is it best to decode with CinemaDNG default or with Clip and Rec.709 (or is does this default to the same anyway?).

Is it best to Decode with "Clip" and About to have a play! Sooooooo Excited! (again - can't thank you enough for this!)

I find it's best to decode with Clip and film log. Then you can interpret things on the fly with an awesome LUT like one of these:

I don't think there's a program that will let you work with a preserved 14-bit colour. That's why its important to desaturate /turn down highlights/ turn up shadows when you're importing into After Effects, you'll need to create "log style" images that you can later retrieve your entire colorspace.

If any program is close to working with native RAW, it's Resolve, but they're not quite there yet.

Hope that helps.

Brilliant. Could you please provide Card specs, dimension specs, and build number?

Thanks for this. :)

Hmmm. I upscaled to 1080p before uploading, so you won't see the preserved resolution with watching on 1080p. Perhaps that's it?

I'm sure you know this... But again, it's only 960 x 360p.

Here's my results with 960 x 360. I've upscaled the results to 1920 x 720 (2.66:1). I used Raw2dng.exe for conversion, then imported into After Effects with a low saturation color profile. Finally, it was colored in Resolve. Coloring was a great challenge. It probably would have been near impossible if I didn't use a flat color profile.

Many thanks to Alex and MK11147

Enjoy
