No realtime preview with hdmi device.
Maybe We will get real time preview in the futur but nobody working on it.
Try this tip : put a Phone with a director's viewfinder application beside your camera to achieve an almost perfect realtime preview of what you record ;) better than nothing...

Right on the Eos M and 700D (not 70d sorry) But only in 1440x1806 not with the new full anamorphic resolution (1736x 2178).

Thank you for the tips ! Will try smartphone viewfinder !

5d mark iii:  No realtime preview exept with fullhd.
No link between Sd hack (160 mHz or 240 mhz)

Maybe, do you mean continuous recording ? It's continuous without sd hack for 5.7k anamorphic.  And it's continuous in 3.5k with 160Mhz hack (don't need 240MHz).
Thank you for the infos ! So we won't get real time preview in the near future for 5dmkiii ? Or it is possible with external monitor or hdmi viewfinder ?
But we have real time preview with eosm and 70D while recording 1x3 anamorphic ? right ?

Hi !
I checked all the hot topics and updates and the progress on ML is crazy !
One info was missing or not clear :
Can we get real time live view during raw rec in 1x3 5.7k anamorphic 1.78 AR and using 160mhz SD card overclock ? Or we really need 240mhz for that ? Does someone already made a test ? Can we imagine real-time also for 3.5k mode ?
Thanks

Start by following theBilalFakhouri massive work on understanding preview registry. His posts are scattered here and there but not too hard to find. Achieving real time preview with anamorphic modes for instance is not easy work. First find the correct combination of preview regs(around 30) and then tweak them together towards increased realtime preview.
If you have a 5DIII and a lot of spare time maybe hook up with "the wizard" and see if you could help him out.
My personal take. Buy the guy a 5DIII and if we´re lucky, he´ll find time to do the work for the 5DIII.
Thanks Danne for the advices !
I'm gonna write to santa claus for theBilalFakhouri ;-)

EOSM: maybe. 5D3: I don't think so - not in anamorphic mode.
And what are the conditions that allows real time preview in EOSm and not in 5DmkIII ?
Btw, amazing news for the other ratios !
#6
Hi all !
What are the other resolution possible in anamorphic ? Do we have a resolutions that have standard ratio like 1:85/1 or 1:78/1 ?
Can we have real time preview even if it is not continuous ? If yes, how much time it stays continuous ?
thanks

I agree. 100 euro is not a lot when you use it for professional purpose

there is aa hardware button to reset the timer. Hope we can do something with the software ! And add a thermal pad to get seomething a bit more reliable. I would love so switch to Panasonic, s5 for exemple but they have DFD autofocus. Someone is working on a TOF module, but I think a software timer reset could be more simple =)

Binning is done in analog domain, We can't Un-bin the pixels is post, we unsqueeze RAW file to correct the aspect ratio, so there is a quality loss if you compared it to 1:1 (Read every pixel on sensor without Binning or Skipping), Example: Look how the details between 1x1, 1x3 , 3x3:
https://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=16516.msg210023#msg210023
Ignore 3x1 image, it's have jagged line issue, but re-solved after I made the tests, didn't make a new test showing true quality of 3x1.

It would be interesting to compare 5.7K 1X3 with Topaz video enhancer that upscales 1:1 to 5.7K as well

+1 for 1X3 it's still not clear for me, especially for 5D3 5.7K mode

I've been shooting RAW for years with other cinema cameras without ANY such issues. BRAW from Blackmagic completely flies, for example. So is ARRIRAW.

Are you telling me that something special needs to be done inside the mlv app after loading the file, to make the raw file playback faster? If yes, then what is that special thing? Will that make the prores export faster? Because the way things are now, it's *dead slow*. And I've tried playing with the raw settings and change things around (e.g. removing AF points, getting back highlights etc), but the speed did NOT improve.
If you want speed, just go with fastcinemadng. It reads MLV via CUDA and is faster. Here everything is processed by CPU. BRAW = CPU+GPU, that's why it's faster.

While setting the shot up you'll have "Framing" and while recording you'll have "GreyScale".
thanks!
#13
With this mode, do you have a normal liveview while shooting ?

I was personally always recording 25 fps so far but 23,98 is just a setting from the Canon menu, which should work same good. So: yes.
Yes.
From my experience: yes.
Never had one but I expect: yes. VAF only blurrs the image. Nothing less, nothing more. I don't see any reason why it should interfere with DPAF.
Thank you ArcziPL, that's surprising that this camera has not so much popularity because it seems by far the best APS-C camera because of DPAF.
I'm gonna switch from my 7D to the 70D now.

Hi everyone !
I read a lot of pages to know what are the updates for 70D and I'm not sure to understand exactly what is actually working.
From what I understood, we can have 1832*1024, 23,98 continuous in 12 bits lossless right ? Does DPAF works with these settings ?
Is it stable ? Does a VAF-7D also works with DPAF ?
Thanks

@A1ex : Hasselblad has a big potential with H6D series but also big issues with their video capabilities. Maybe they want to fix it with someone who has a lot of experience.

I have one contact that I can give you by PM if you want

OK Walter, understood. Then, another alternative would be education. Giving conferences or teach. I'm sure for example that Louis Lumière's School in France would be interested to invite A1ex and other developers to talk about the open source challenge and canon's reverse engineering

what about selling "rebranded certified CF / SD cards" dedicated to magic lantern ? With a margin to help ML development.
Instead of Komputer Bay cards, we have Magic Lantern certified cards =) It's just a random idea but we all need cards so...

I think the personal Patreon is a good idea. Each Developers can decide to open a Patreon. For supporting research. Not features.

Where is the Patreon ?

7D could have been the 2nd greatest ML camera after 5D3 but this didn't happen... I was waiting for it for a long time. Let's move forward. I'm going to buy an M50 and make some tests on it. Dual Pixel, 4k, evf... RAW soon... great program !
For MLV app, I'm ready to help financially for a Cuda GPU option. And give a lot of feedback and advices. Fast Cinema DNG is good but it's too different from ML. I helped them but I think it would be faster and better to implement CUDA in MLV app. It's good to get a fast Cinema workflow, offline/online conformation and all things that is required to use ML in the best conditions when working with hundreds of footage on a laptop ;-)

I think let's Make Magic Lantern organized by writing Goals for each year I liked this idea from fastcinemadng website.

All the users needs to speed up the progress I am one of them , every day thousands of users and guests are here reading and looking forward for something new and okay the things are maybe not working that way I remember when I was waiting to ISOLess 8/15 problem to be solved on my 700D and after a year of waiting nothing happened, also when I saw 4K for 5D3 the first thing I thought when it will come to my cam and of course I started to wait , in both cases waiting didn't give a result until I decided to do it.

I didn't have a problem for paying instead of waiting two years haha, most of users are ready to pay with a smiling face to speed up the progress, 2 dollars from each makes all the difference.

What I am saying is to keep ML non-commercial, but speeding up the progress commercial instead of waiting , we will save our time and you take your money as freelancer because the productive time isn't in your spare time anymore.

Patreon account will help to organize these things , Write your goal and it price , interested users will pay. Or write your goals on the forum and the users will select which one they need to boost the progress on then create it on Patreon.

I think let's try :D

I will purchase Magic Lantern App too  , but what are you planning to present on it ? I will pay 10$ if it can uses Smartphones as Dual Pixel autofocus  :D .

Last things I was thinking of:

Magic Lantern video guides for Developing or How to use it, just need to finish this year then I will take this.

I will do my best to spread Magic Lantern, I should be smart and creative. That can helps to get more Developers to help and develop.

Okay
Also because Magic Lantern has helped me a lot , MLVApp too , I have started to search to a Cuda programmers for making MLVApp GPU Accelerated.

This is my goals nowadays. But I need to finish this studying year to start.

Wish me all the luck.
Agree with everything

@12georgiadis

Here is my setup, E mount ring screwed (lucky that two holes fit), plastic ring with electronic contact for lenses removed to make some space for the filter. Just used two small plastic pieces, glued them and screw the filter on them.

Just to mention, when removing plastic and lens contact ring, you can't take pictures anymore (Err 20) you just can use movie mode.

Thank you ! I think I prefer to adapt my 7D-vaf to 100D than to damage/restrict Eos-m usage but in the same time, I'm happy that with some Diy adjustment it works well !

to avoid moire and aliasing, I have bought a 6D VAF Mosaic Engineering AA filter and achived to tinker with to adapt it to the camera. Working very good as well.
If anybody wants more information.
Do you have some instructions and pictures to show us how to adapt VAF filters ? Sounds interesting =)

I think Switch is a good alternative here. Why. Simply because these scripts are all based upon MLV files and it all takes place after all other processes are done in Mlv App. However if you want a workaround you could find this place in the script:
#split into 4 chunks
   split -l $(( $( wc -l < /tmp/mlvapp_path/file_names.txt ) / 4 + 1 )) /tmp/mlvapp_path/file_names.txt /tmp/PROXYFILES
   rm /tmp/PROXYFILES

And then you put in this above those lines:
cd "$(cat /tmp/mlvapp_path/output_folder.txt)"
ls *.MLV > /tmp/mlvapp_path/file_names.txt

The new part should look like this:
cd "$(cat /tmp/mlvapp_path/output_folder.txt)"
ls *.MLV > /tmp/mlvapp_path/file_names.txt

#split into 4 chunks
   split -l $(( $( wc -l < /tmp/mlvapp_path/file_names.txt ) / 4 + 1 )) /tmp/mlvapp_path/file_names.txt /tmp/PROXYFILES
   rm /tmp/PROXYFILES

Now you can select only one MLV from within Mlv App and by simply exporting one dng(or more for that matter) it will activate the script then go through all MOV and MLV files in that folder regardless if you processed the other MLV files or not.
Superb Danne ! I'll try the 1 MLV selection method
