Perhaps FPS is a factor?

Noix, The cameras internals are the limiting factor on the 5DII as of right now. Not card speed. The camera outputs somewhere about 60-65MB/s max.

>it's always better

You forgot to mention why. Usually its because sharpening is best done as a final step, after all your other gradings end edits. But for my part, I can do everything in Camera RAW, including sharpening, and the final render in Premiere is faster than playig back the resulting file, because there are no effects for it to render. Thats just me, I know its not the normal routine :-)

I'm updating this footage almost daily with new tests. I updated my Vimeo account to display HQ 1080p.

disuye,

Did you try? Indeed its possible, been playing with that feature myself, and found that I was recording 1920x720 on my 5D Mark II in 24FPS override in crop mode!! I didnt even know the 5D could do 1920. Anyway, the shots are gorgeous.

Updated with a 'HDR' test - I made two versions of my files with 2.5 stops of difference, and batched them through Photomatix' 'Fusion-Natural' mode. - Very fast!

>so i should always work with fps override ON for the RAW ?

Its only necessary in crop mode.

>How long can you recording with 1880x840

Not long I'm afraid. I use a Sandisk Extreme 60MB/s card untill I figure out which ultra fast card to get. It will run that res on a faster card though (thats why I included that bit).

I'd be very interested to hear from others using Sandisk Extreme 90MB/s cards on 5D II - what res can you do? Sandisk is the most widely available vendor in Europe, AFAIK. The 32GB card is not crazy expensive either.

Noix22, turn on FPS override.

Thanks! I developed the frames in Camera Raw, and sharpening is part of the usual routine. I also added a 'sharpen for screen' to the output settings. The sharpening enhances the aliasing too, ofcourse, but in my not-so-interesting first part of the clip you can clearly see how bad it is. Also see the leaning flower in the ISO tests.

'Not usable' I think is very individual. I publish for the internet, and the moiré was there already on h.264 from the Mark II, so its no sudden surprise. Compare it to the Mark III, and then its suddenly 'not usable'.. you can fix some (color) moire in Camera Raw, the aliasing seems there to stay, unless you shoot in crop mode.

I think right now the biggest hurdles for the Mark II is the 4gb limit and the resolution limits. Sound you can do externally.

I appended some more test footage (iso tests) and upgraded my Vimeo account so it can display 1080p:

If I shoot in 10x crop mode, I get alternating (two different) frames from different time. The image is also no more cropped than 5x. I'm likely doing it wrong, I had the impression I could shoot at both 5x and 10x mag.

Good news is I havent gotten any actually corrupt files with latest raw2dng so far.

Its amazing to be able to use a RAW stills photographer workflow (Camera RAW and Bridge, basically) to work your video files, I think. It saves me a lot of time in a NLE doing color correction and cleaning up compressed footage. now its all taken care of, just opening up a single frame in Camera RAW and doing that, synching the rest. Its not full HD yet, and there's a problem with aliasing and moire (nothing new, really, but more pronounced when you get more detail). Also, its not reliable. I get many corrupted file writes, but some of them work. Its still early days.

Thank you for your support and work on this A.D. I got it working :-)

Yes.

A.D. Unload modules does nothing, the procedure you outlined was the first thing I tried. Installed latest nightly and now ML wont boot at all.
#91
Getting a load module error on this latest build on 5D2.

Hmm gets worse, updated to latest nightly (20th), and ML won't load.

>only 1880 x1080

Confirmed perpetual res for 5d2 on fast cards? That'd be close enough to HD. I can only get up to 1880x720  on my Sandisk Extreme.

Never mind, I need to learn to read. Still interested in max perpetual res on 5D2 on fastest cards. Should we hope for full HD, or give up the thought?
#93
Thanks I modified my OP.
#94
You need to go to the last menu item and 'load modules' first. It doesn't auto load, so you'll have to load and configure every time camera is powered on.

Make sure you've got a folder called modules in your ML folder with raw-rec and ml in it.

>When mentioned earlier, for some reason I thought that the 240dpi was too good to be true

There is some confusion regarding dpi (ppi) in here. Resolution information does not matter at all when media is displayed on a monitor. On a monitor, the media will always display at the monitors resolution (ppi). The only thing that matters for size on a monitor is the medias dimensions (xy pixels) together with the ppi of the display unit.

Embedded resolution info is only used in print, to determine how many of those xy pixels should fit in one inch on paper.

I figured it out, used the footer from one of my working files and they come out great. Thanks for the pointer. I use Camera RAW like the other poster. For a stills shooter, its a wet dream to be able to use the usual workflow, only for video.

A.D. Appreciate the footer for my corrupted files, however, it seems to convert to 30fps @ 1880x720, and my footage is 25fps 1880x540, causing the frames to 'roll'. Is there anything I can change to convert to 25fps? Also, I'm unsure of where exactly in the code the footer should start, since the code seems to shift around a bit (I'm a noob).
