Raw Video Postprocessing / Re: Highlight recovery in Resolve?
« on: June 25, 2013, 06:13:11 PM »
I did not get how to apply a LUT to a node instead of a clip. How do you do it? just rightclick the node?
//EDIT: Thanks, found it. :)

In the end it seems the color wheels are applied after the 3D LUT, and the curves are applied before.

So using curves, I could recover detail in the Highlights, that was clipped in wheels mode.

That seems to be the key. :)

are you aware that the progress bars lock after processing about 1/4th of the frames?
it still processes all of them, but the GUI greys out until its done if I click inside.

Feature Requests / Re: 5 sec WAV Audio in RAW
« on: June 22, 2013, 01:29:32 AM »
well, where would you put in your timecode to make it sync in the first place?
also, your audio recorder would have to have the same timecode-

AND you can be sure that these timecodes will start to differ after some hours..

We'd just need an option to make the WAV stop by itself before it kills our .RAW recording buffer, so we can still keep filming without sound :)

@DAK29:

this has been implemented in 5D2 Build of 06-21.
It gets you more frames total. Not the FPS are higher.

very impressive!!

it is all about less man-hours in post.

if this feature were implemented,
we would just say scene and take number at the beginning-
or make any other distinguishable sound/noise.
Then:

- import RAW with WAV in the editor timeline
- let pluraleyes work out the syncing of the rest. Easy.

So syncing Audio will take 5 minutes again, instead of several hours.

Advantage over sync beep: can not mistake one take for the other. :)

Feature Requests / 5 sec WAV Audio in RAW

Hello guys,

I posted this over in Raw Forum already, feel free to clean up there.

I just read a post on here which gave me an Idea:
since the WAV recording is not continuous and it sometimes stops the recording of .RAW Video, too-

why not implement a mode to record a predefined number of seconds of WAV Audio along the Video when pressing record,
to give users a base to start with, using software like pluraleyes to sync audio automatically.

This could save hours in post-production and may only require a little coding.

Anyone up to the task?

Raw Video / Re: Audio Sync WAV Idea

I do use a clap slate again with ML RAW-
but I liked it without the slate. I have used pluraleyes for over a year now and it saves a LOT of time. :)

well, a clap sound would not be unique enough for pluraleyes to sync it.
I was thinking more like the Audio would already be running, and immediately after starting the video ( in our ~5 second WAV )
you ( your assistant, your clapper, anyone ) would say the take title and number - as always-
which would be unique enough for pluraleyes to sync the external audio. :)

- if you dont know pluraleyes -
it compares the waveform of different sources of the same recorded event to match audio position in your timeline.

well, a sync beep still requires all the syncing work to be done, and the beep is not on the first frame but somewhere around the first second, which makes is almost useless.

The point in a WAV file, if only some seconds, is: use pluraleyes and not having to sync at all.

I will happily sacrifice some of my buffer time for it, as it records continuous with one or no stars anyway. :)

Since sound recording is such a problem:

how about making it record a predefined number of seconds of WAV Audio only,
to not make the recording stop, but still have something for automatic syncing of audio like pluraleyes to work with...?

Who do I have to contact for this idea?

Okay, I am no expert in this- but I will look into the topic to get a better understanding.

Do I see it correctly assuming paid users can have the full RAW workflow, but smaller file size with RAW2GPCF?
the -422 option does not give the same flexibility right now, of course.

You got PM. :)

Thanks for all the work on this! Amazing, how fast you implemented the split file feature! I am looking forward to testing it!

I know at least that on german film sets blackbalancing is done on a daily basis, so there might be a reason for that, I myself never used it before..

Hey nightvision04,

thanks for your effort!
If I do this it is similar to using Adobe Camera Raw for the exposure, and then using levels on the created TIFF in Photoshop-
it does not bring down the hightlight detail like the recovery slider in ACR -

See:
If I bring down the Exposure in Resolve, I can see the clouds defined clearly in my shot.
If I bring the Exposure up, I can see the actors better.

So, using the "upped" Exposure, if I try to bring down the highlights, It acts just like a jpeg.
Sky turns darker, but no detail is revealed. (no clouds, just grey, because of overexposure)-
Even though the "recover highlights" option is ticked.

Is this expected behaviour?

Raw Video Postprocessing / Highlight recovery in Resolve?
« on: June 20, 2013, 01:23:14 AM »
Hello again,
just learning Resolve and missing the Highlight recovery from ACR..

How can I bring down the highlights with the info from the original RAW file like I can in exposure mode?
I am talking about a feature similar to Adobe Camera RAW Highlight recovery mode.
So we can bring exposure up for shadow detail- and keep the detail from the .RAW in the highlights..

any way to do this? :) Only in ACR?

yep, I fix RAW Naming in version 2.3 - will be online in a few days! thanks for your support!
until then you can replace raw2dng.exe :)

I think when the CinemaDNG converter has implemented compression and commandline, the batchtools will be able to take care of all that is needed.

I for one intend to write my BATCHelor in that manner. generate CinemaDNG and a Cineform Proxy directly on set.
resolve gives unbelievable performance and unmatched image quality when using 3D LUTs.
I think this is the way to go.

Proxy with cineform (lightning fast creation) and final version with CDNG and Resolve.
Ideally all done automatically with batch processing on set.

hey thanks, that is really helpful! will do :)

EDIT: It worked! Thanks so much!
curiously, there was only one instance of my blacklevel. changing that helped. :)

maybe you can make blacklevel editable somehow, because some of my 5DII Videos, which should have 1024 - have a wrong blacklevel of 2037 set inside the .RAW and look really bad.
I would like to set it to 1024 again.

99
I am currently uploading a sample for your testing. It will take some time. :)

exiftool reports a problem when trying on cinemaDNG, aswell as normal DNG.
"error reading image data"
source .RAW file also cant be edited... unsupported file type.

so there is no way to correct it inside the .RAW?
I dont understand the second method. I assume I need a compiler for that?
