a.d. & pravdomil's 5D2 builds / Re: 14-Bit RAW video Builds for 5D2

Ok, 50f68ce14a69 seems to be the most stable build if you're using komputerbay cards. I was able to get stable speed and continuous recording.

But just before changing the build I was trying to get the greyscale preview or the hacked one. I was *never* able to get those, no matter what I choose. What could be the problem?

I believe HaCked isn't functional on the 5D Mark II and that ML Grayscale only works in 5x Zoom.

Thanks for the much needed warning on Moire and Aliasing road block. How were you able to get 1880x1080 in 1x, What's your advice on the best aspect ratio with the most resolution and final what's your advice on scaling RAW?

Just scale it in your NLE, we are talking 2-4% increase which will be negligible to your naked eye.

I only shoot in clean 16:9 aspect ratios so far, with a resolution of 1856 x 1044 (3,33% upscale for 1080p) or 1880 x 1058 (2,08% upscale to 1080p).

You just have to be aware of moire and aliasing, which I don't personally experience being a bigger problem in RAW versus H.264 record mode.

here i show how to reduce moire in Adobe after effects, hope this is helpful :)

It's a bit hard to see which blending mode you pick.

Hey guys, is there a guide anywhere on how to shoot dual iso in the 5d?  all I'm getting after setting up dual iso and hdr video is either RAW or regular H264 with the flicker.  Any suggestions?

Yes, Dual ISO is ONLY working in photo mode, not video on the 5D Mark II.

Modules Development / Re: Dual ISO - massive dynamic range improvement
« on: August 15, 2013, 09:07:58 AM »
First off, my apologies if this is covered elsewhere. I've dug and dug, and can't find anywhere this is explicitly answered: is DualISO working on the 5DII or 50D for video?

I've gotten it to work well with stills (though I have the same issue another poster reported that no matter what I set the recovery ISO to, it will not go above 1600 on my 5DII or 50D) but I see no difference between RAW video shot with DualISO on and off for either the 5DII or 50D. Since I'm using a mac, exclusively, it could also be that Son of Batch just doesn't deal with DualISO raw video -- Son of Batch is the only RAW -> DNG converter for mac I've seen that supposedly supports DualISO.

That's all for now. I greatly *greatly* appreciate your time, and my hat is off to all the folks working on ML for the amazing work to date on this project. ML RAW now gives me a way to process and grade that makes sense to my photo-centric brain.  ;D

Then the answer should be pretty straightforward. No Dual ISO in video mode on the 5D Mark II, which has been said many times before now  ;)

Tragic Lantern / Re: Flicker in ACR/After Effects
« on: August 14, 2013, 11:43:39 AM »
Okay, there have been popping up presets for After Effects/Adobe to get flat pictures, import or render them to 10bit and apply luts or whatever. I've also read people complaining about flickering in ACR.

So far so good, I remember that on LRtimelapse (nice program) there is a general consens to not use highlight recovery, black , white, shadows,etc... because they are not linear but some "secret sauce" which depends on the scene. This doesn't matter to stills (which it was designed for) but when movement comes into play this can actually generate flicker. It does not always happen, but sometimes you get the flickering.

To avoid this, I have "created" two a camera profiles which give you a very flat picture style and some desaturation. This is just a test as I'm not an expert but I think it works fine (tried out with the 50d raw video with cdng files). I will look into it again when I have some time. Here are the camera profiles:

You have to put them into c:/users/"your username"/AppData/Roaming/Adobe/CameraRaw/CameraProfiles

Afterwards they should appear under the camera calibration tab.

On a Mac you have to:

  • Download and install the DNG Profile Editor from Adobe
  • File -> Open an DNG image
  • Under Base Profile load the custom .dcp camera profile
  • File -> Export Profile, which will save it in the correct folder, so you can use it in AE or PS

I know that mlv2dng is very much work in progress and just early stage but is there any possibility of batch file processing yet?
Did somebody succeed to implement this in any existing raw2dng solution?

You can actually run multiple copies of raw2dng if that is what you are asking?

I usually open 4 instances and convert that way.

I'm only getting ML Grayscale Preview in 5x Zoom mode, is this normal behavior?

It means I can't squeeze out 1856 x 1044 in non-cropped shooting (just below the 77.7 MB/s required for continuous at 23.976 FPS) but can in 5x Zoom mode (with ML Grayscale).

On the latest build :)

Raw Video / Re: Canon 5D III RAW vs recording with the Atomos Ninja 2
« on: July 30, 2013, 11:08:31 AM »
The Atomos Ninja 2 captures 10-bit 4:2:2 video directly from the HDMI-port, whereas Magic Lantern gives you a 14-bit RAW feed directly from the sensor output.

Make your own conclusion ;)

I got it installed on my 50D. Any ideas why recordings stops after few seconds? I even chose a smaller resolution like 1280x720, it still stops. Is there a setting that I forgot to turn off/on?

All I did was extract the file onto my compact flash. I'm not sure if there are other files that I need to download.

Well, what Compactflash Card do you have?  :)

Great, great, really great work guys!
If someone could summarize the list of improvements of the last release about:
max res in continuos mode
max res in crop mode
max res in 4:3 mode (for anamorphic footage)
...and the others goals achieved by "dream Magic Lantern team"on raw recording...would be very appreciated!

I mean no disrespect but couldn't you just as well read the thread?

Try RAW2DNG and upload a single frame (DNG) so we can take a look.

Hi Guys! Need help!

I have used mac about ten ears. But now i have noob brain for this moment.  I try to install Raw to MKII.
Downloaded right zip from topicstarter link, Copied file to ML root folder and started terminal like this

And it has ganerated some new files.

Tell me, what i'm doing wrong, and can someone make quick little tutorial step by step.. ))  I need to shot a music video in several hours. Big thanks.

Big thanks :)

What exactly are you trying to do in Terminal? Joining files over 4 GB? You don't need to fiddle with that to record RAW video on the 5D Mark II.

Look at the tutorial on how to install Magic Lantern on your camera.

For YouTube you might as well just export your projects as H.264 mov, as their compression is going to screw you over either way ;)

500MB DNG sequence

If you want to play with the DNG's... (and see if you can get it working without frame skipping ;))

Weird, I looked it through and it doesn't frame skip here. There must be something wrong with your workflow or Vimeo/Youtube does something when re-encoding.

You soo right Julian, Love those images it is so filmic.. Got another question should I order my 64GB Komputerbay from EOSHD source (Ebay) , or on Amazon found them there as well.  If you ordered one where did you get your's from?

I bought mine on eBay but the package came in a flat Amazon cardboard package.

General Development / Re: uncompressed 14-bit RAW video recording
« on: May 20, 2013, 11:37:51 AM »
I tried the May 19 build on my 5D Mark II, and I can only get 155-185 frames at 1280x720 @ 24fps on a Transcend 400x 32GB card, even with Hack3d mode.

I know the card isn't the best, but it should only need 36.9MB/s for these settings, and my card benchmarks around 45-50MB/s. I feel like I'm getting way less than I should, anyone have any other ideas?

I can easily do 1200-1300 frames on my Transcend 300x 16 GB card at 1280x720@24p, so try a different build.

Speed varies by capacity size, so this isn't a new phenomenon.

16 GB cards are usually slower than higher capacity cards, depending on how many NAND flash dies they have in parallel to the controller.

Ooops, I think you have just put an end to all my experiments, am going to wait for something more or less stable before moving on, I have already been having a clumsy feeling the last couple of days... what is your shutter count, mine is at 66k and I still need this thing to last!

Don't worry, the shutter is mechanical, so it have simply been worn out. Still, I have less than 60,000 actuations but it vary wildly. Canon has an MTF of 150,000 actuations but some fall under and some over.

It should be physically impossible for Magic Lantern to have anything to do with this issue.

I think you can find useful this tread, it seems to be a problem not tangled with ML raw mode.

Yeah, already used my Google-fu but have come up short. Going to run by my local Canon technician today and see what he says but my gut feeling is a worn out shutter.

Sorry for derailing the thread!

And now, as many other users, I found myself fighting with the "API version mismatch" error LOL

Want to trade with my problem?  :P

Started last night with my 5D Mark II, so shutter probably worn out. I was shooting 1/2000th pictures last weekend of Icelandic horses doing tölt, so that probably explains it ...

Update: Camera has resurrected itself simply by not being used for a week. Weird but can't complain  ;)

Yeah, continuously. The Raw2DNG module only reported 1 dropped frame out of 1505 frames and I believe it was toward the end just before it stopped automatically. I am working on compiling the video right now.

It's strange because I have a 16gb Lexar of the same speed and it can't record 1880x840 past 300 frames.

16 GB cards are usually slower than 32 GB and higher capacity cards.
