Iv read the CFast 2.0 team (SanDisk) is currently working along side with Canon... cant see it comin to mkii but can mkiii and up... may be 7D also.. hope it comes too mkii.... also hope if it does they dont patch ML, love ML wayyyy too much.

Seriously, no shipping camera has support for CFast. It is NOT backwards compatible. You cannot add it to an already existing camera, as the pin-out is totally different. Just look at the P-ATA and S-ATA connector.

They share the same form factor as normal CompactFlash but the similarities end there.

Are you sure you're testing the correct CF card and not the SD card?

The 5D Mark II doesn't have a SD card slot ;)

You need to process the CR2 files with cr2hdr.

No shipping camera support CFast to begin with.

Even though they share the same form factor, they are in fact not compatible.

It doesn't matter, no shipping camera supports CFast.

Even though it shares the same form factor as regular CompactFlash, they are not compatible.

Ancient magic will work, like this:

Pluraleyes won't work for good reasons, as you mentioned. No audio to sync.

Any of you guys shoot slightly under exposed so that you can bring the exposure in post. Or do you guys just shoot in the best exposure that you feel, followed by post work? Just wondering how you guys shoot in.

ETTR usually. Quite easy with Global Draw on :)

Yes efficiency, in regards to longer record time and resolution, sorry for the confusion.

Those numbers look good, which build date are you using?

Thanks!

The newest from a_d_, which can be found here.

I'm using the 2013/09/10 26f79287de2b build.

Also, I've been through nearly all the pages and can't seem to find any particular settings to use in the Canon and ML menu to maximize the efficiency of RAW video recording?.

And my 64gb KomputerBay 1000x cf card has a continuous write speed of around 71-72 mb/s during recording, on the 8/16/13 build. I have global draw off, card warm up=64mb, small hacks on, fps override on @24fps. Does this write speed seem about right fo this ML date build along with my settings?

What are you guys using and how do upres your footages to 1080p from say an 1880x800, etc setting. I use Sony Vegas Pro and After Effects for my workflow.

Thanks!

RAW is RAW, what do you mean by efficiency? Resolution? Longer recording times?

I suggest you download the newest build for the 5D Mark II and test it out. I'm getting anywhere between 73-76MB/s in full frame (1856x1044) and over 77MB/s in crop 1x  (1854x1044) for continuous shooting. This is with Global Draw on. Preview set to Auto and Small Hacks on.

Yes. Also it's a quick method for doing timelapse. I could have shot full-res photos and used the intervalometer but that would have taken longer to set up. I'm gonna experiment with Dual ISO next time. I've already saved a config that's set up for this specific timelapse so I'm hoping for some more fog tonight :)

Pardon my ignorance but ML does have a built-in intervalometer and exposure ramping. I suppose you a fine with the resolution downgrade  ;)

A little FPS Override raw video timelapse from last night  :)

You are basically just using the raw_rec module to save shutter releases or?

I'm sorry your information is wrong.

The 5D mkII only records h264 continuously for  11:57 (roughly 12min) which is 3.98 gig ( roughly 4gig) which is the limitation due to fat32.

I just confirmed this again to get the precise size and time not the rounded off figures.

Yeah, that's just not right. Put on the lens cap or point it at a white wall.

It will record for 29 minutes and 59 seconds. It's useless footage but it will record for that long.

Greetings from the shadows.

Been wanting to register for a long time.-

First off. thank you for giving me a new cinema camera, a.d, alex and all the other developers ! I love you!

I've had no problems to speak of with the raw builds, camera has only crashed twice since RAW first was released.
But I just can't get full resolution out of crop mode. There is a black border to the right of the frame, some 30 pixels or maybe more. I read awhile ago that you had to move the Focus box 8 times left and 7 times up or something like that, but I can't find that post in this thread. Also tried "Center for 5x RAW" in focus box settings, but that too gives me the black border. Can someone redirect me or tell me what I need to do to get full res out of the Crop mode?

Thank you,

Kharak.

What exactly do you mean by full resolution?

Just download the newest version of Magic Lantern for the 5D Mark II here.

Replace all the files with the ones of your old ML installation :)

If need be I can make a video but it should be straightforward.

But at that point the 5d would have been recording for more than 10-20 minutes already.
This would be beyond what it was originally made to do and in my tests the camera would already begin to heat up and smell funny!

Not to be entirely pedantic but out of the box the 5D Mark II can record 29 minutes and 59 seconds (limited for tax reasons within the EU).

Of course, only in the old crummy H.264 codec.

Make sure the DUAL_ISO.MO module is loaded in the Modules menu in Magic Lantern, then enable it under the Expo menu.

You need to download the cr2hdr program for post-processing the .CR2 pictures to DNGs.

Please read the white paper for Dual ISO or read the FAQ.

A quick example:

Goofing around with older builds, which I got faster write speeds with in normal 1x mode.

Tested several versions and went back to build 31302bbc6461 and for some reason I can't get continuous shooting in 3x mode now, as I used to. Stops recording as soon as it hits around 200 frames (running out of memory)?  :o

As an idiot I didn't save my earlier Magic Lantern installation ... so have to test them all now.

Update: Don't worry, I'm just an idiot. Forgot to enable FPS Override :P

I'm on my 4th 64 GB 1000x card from KB.   >:(  I am going to return it.  Not worth the hassle!  Shit-- ruined a shoot and my name!
Yeah, it just did the same as the others-- crashed  BEWARE!

While using Magic Lantern?

Is there any way at all to get around the 4gb limit thing?

https://vimeo.com/68473652

That's the only thing I've been able to find with how to deal with that on a Mac. Everything else I see is for Windows. Is this actually the best/only thing I can do?

EDIT: I tried the cat command the person mentioned in the comments so I guess that's a better way to do all of this.

It's easy.

  • Open Terminal
  • Write "cat"
  • Drag'n'drop the first Mxx-xxxx.RAW file onto Terminal
  • Drag'n'drop the next Mxx-xxxx.R00 file onto Terminal
  • Add all the other Mxx-xxxx.Rxx files into Terminal like above
  • Proceed to write ">"
  • Then write the destination file (I usually just drag'n'drop the first file ending in RAW and renaming it)
  • Push Enter and let the magic begin

Example:
cat /Volumes/Scratch\ Disk/RAW/M29-0830.RAW /Volumes/Scratch\ Disk/RAW/M29-0830.R00 > /Volumes/Scratch\ Disk/RAW/M29-FINI.RAW

so there is no way to process cr2 files on Mac...? :-[

Sure there is, look here.

Grab OSX_cr2hdr.zip and install.

why the package seems uncomplete?

i manage to activate the module on my camera but when i take a shot i have a picture with lines, did i miss something?

Yes, you need to download the cr2hdr program and convert the .CR2 pictures to DNGs.

And next time please look at the FAQ or the white paper for Dual ISO.

Thanks brunonicko and Britom.

I just shot continuously at 1280 x 720 on a Hoodman 300x card, which benchmarks at 37MBs, and 296mbs, with Live View for the first time.

When I shot over a minute or so, my raw file had a Unix file that with the suffix ROO or R00 at the end.  The Unix file was the large file, and neither could be transcoded into dng files.

Very happy with this.  The 720p file is so much richer than the h.264 1080p files I shot as a comparison test.

You need to join the files, they should be called Mxx-xxxx.RAW and any subsequent spanned file should share the same name but end in .RXX.

Files are automatically spanned when you reach the 4 GB limit of the FAT32 file system.
