So I got ahold of an EOS M for a great deal, and I've been playing around with the various raw modes the past day or so. I've got a couple questions that I can't seem to nail down definitive answers on.

• Is there a post that lists all the crop factors of the various raw modes in the latest Danne builds? I can find mentions of the crop factors in various videos and blog posts but nothing that just plainly says "x mode has y crop factor, etc..."
• I've noticed that the 2.5k FRTP doesn't show the entire frame being captured. When shooting at 2.35:1 The right ~1/5 of the frame is black unless I enter "crop preview" with the INFO button. Is that correct behavior?
• Along with the previous question - is there a way to hide the garbage data on the LCD when shooting in 2.5K FRTP? I'm referring to the noise/bad data/previous frames that show up below the live view on the screen. 5K anamorphic FRTP seems to auto-overlay a crop mask of some kind to fix this issue, so I'd think something similar for 2.5K would be easy.

Hoping to replace my 650D with this camera (technically it's smaller cousin I suppose) so I'd love to learn as much as I can about all the new modes that have been added since my last adventure with ML nearly 5 years ago.

I think I was blending together the anamorphic and mcm rewire modes when I said higher-resolution recording with no crop. I still can't pin down exactly what either of these modes actually do and don't do, but I'll keep reading the thread.

Is there a good "summary post" of where RAW video is currently on the EOS-M? It's very difficult to sort through 150 pages of info to figure out the full view of where the project's at.

Seriously considering grabbing one for travel/run-and-gun videography because they're so cheap, but I haven't been able to find definitive info on what the camera can & can't do in terms of RAW right now. From reading back to around page 90 of this thread, so far I think I understand that:

• classic MLV recording works fine but only up to liveview resolution like all other cameras
• new cropped RAW recording works up to 5k but with a giant 3x crop factor
• (I think) the MCM rewire builds allow for RAW recording at higher resolutions without the huge crop factor but aren't super stable

Let me know if I'm dead wrong with any of those assumptions. I'm seriously amazed by the amount of work that's been put in to this camera and (assuming I can grab a camera for a good deal) I can't wait to get started playing with it.

Using your latest 650D build .zip, both raw_rec and mlv_rec appear to be broken.

When mlv_rec is loaded on boot, I receive this error:

And raw_rec results in:

Hi all!

I've been out of the ML loop for a while due to school and work but I'm starting to pick up some videography again. Am I understanding correctly that sd_uhs has solved the SD card bottleneck and we can get much better raw video resolutions now?

Obviously we're still limited to the max liveview res without crop mode, but if I'm able to get constant recording at the max raw resolution (17xx by 9xx if I'm remembering right) that's a huge new development since the last time I messed around with raw video.

One other question - what's the status of the pink dots issue? I remember there were a couple tools for dealing with it but again, it's been a year or two since I've done much in the video world with my 650D.

Have there been any major updates to MLV recording? I remember back when it first came out I used it and couldn't get stable recording above 720p.

I really like how RAW looks but the limitations of upscaling right now are what really put me off of it.

I've got a strange issue with the histogram.

When the camera is not plugged in to anything else, the histogram is accurate.


However, when I plug in either of my monitors, the histogram reading of the same scene without changing any settings jumps up dramatically, preventing me from accurately exposing.


Anyone else encountered this issue?

Are we talking about Canon's h.264 implementation (generating MOV-FIles) or about RAW video achieved by ML devs?

Sorry, I was referring to internal H.264 recording.

Can I get clarification?

I've been told by several people that the rebel line of cameras will never looks as great as other offerings because they do not shoot in true 1080p. I've been told that they shoot in upscaled 720p. Is there truth in this, or were these people just trying to say that a cheap camera is worse than an expensive one?

I've always wondered this because it is apparent in many of my shots that they lack detail and clarity. I've never known for certain because it appears many other videos out there also display this sort of "muddiness" in 650d footage. I don't know if it's just my lense (18-135 stm, a known soft lens) or the internal processing that's caused this.

Hi guys, this is my first message on the forum, so hello everyone!

Well... I use a Canon 650D and I'm wondering how stable the actual build is. For what I've been reading here, it seems that there are still some issues while recording RAW video (the pink dots and some frame skipping with 720p @ 24fps RAW). The SD card I use is a 45mb/s 32Gb SanDisk Extreme.

What should I do?, wait for a less-buggy version or give it a try?
I've been waiting a lot for the final/stable version but I see that it's not going to be released in the near future (this summer) at least.

Really it's not that buggy and many of the features work without issue. You should be able to scrape by recording raw with 45Mb/s, and the pink dot issue can be mostly resolved by using a1ex's raw2dng tools that have been modded to work with 650D footage. I don't have experience with MLV but I'm sure a bit of googling would help you out.

You drag your raw files onto the exe.

If PDR works for you then yes, otherwise use a1ex's raw2dng_cs2x2_whitefix.exe which removes the pink dots and converts to dng in the same step.

Now, if you could find a way to remove the pink dots without removing dual iso data that would be amazing.

I've experienced similar issues to this. I've also had problems with zebras on my ikan.

I've got a question for nano and anyone else who may be able to help.

I use the histogram display religiously, as well as the zebras (and I'm sure many others do as well) but I've run into an interesting quirk. When I use my Ikan VL5 monitor, the histogram jumps up almost a full stop. Since my monitor is not exactly a SmallHD, it is a bit brighter and not calibrated all too well. But, I want to rely on my histogram and zebras to make sure I'm still in focus and this exposure jump really prevents that from happening.

Where exactly does the camera get its histogram data from? Why does the meter jump up when I plug in my external monitor? This is pretty important, because I've been using the T4i a lot recently for client work and using the built in lcd is not a very professional look.

raw2dng_cs2x2_ahdlike.exe is the latest version.

Page 13 has the other versions as well.

A1ex's programs work a lot better than PDR for most cases at the moment.

Not sure if it's a known bug, but when using an external monitor focus peaking doesn't work. The dots are scattered all over the place as if the overlay has been shifted. Also, the histogram goes up almost a full stop or so when using a monitor as opposed to the default lcd.

PDR is broken for all intensive purposes. A1ex's modded raw2dng.exe for the 650D works alright for most cases - that thread is http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=6658, the same as the PDR thread. Look around the sixth page or so.

However, if you want to use dual iso, you're SOL. Neither of these methods can remove the dots while keeping the dual iso lines, which is disappointing as I've got a whole set of fire juggling clips to mess with, but no way to use them.

Also, I don't know if you guys want ideas, but I'll throw mine out there and you can take it or leave it. Would it be possible to add to the FPS Override, increasing the setting to allow a frame rate such as 128 but at a loss of resolution, possible 640X480? If you COULD add it, I would really benefit from it, if not, I'd love to understand what would prevent a mod like that.

If I recall it's because the sensor itself is limited to 60fps max. There've been plenty of requests for this over the years, but I'm pretty sure it's a hardware limitation.

Has anyone been successful at getting good-looking Dual ISO videos with the 650D? The tools can't seem to manage both removing the pink dots and merging the lines without one interfering with the other.

That being said, ML has been working great on my 650D and it's been a vital tool with my client work.
