Unfortunately, useful info gets buried quickly here (and few seem willing to search much).  RE: 60D, this has been known for quite awhile (since May):

General Help Q&A / Re: 6D v1.1.3
August 26, 2013, 04:17:35 PM
The 5DM3 isn't listed, yet thousands are running ML on it.
The 7D isn't listed either, yet thousands are running ML on it.

How did they manage that?

Also, you're NOT supposed to run ML on a camera you just purchased, regardless of your ML experience level.  You're supposed to use it for ~6 months so you learn how it works front and back--then and ONLY then are you supposed to attempt ML.  That's so you're not back here in a week blaming ML for something Canon does!

Go enjoy your 6D AS IS for 3 to 6 months then come back and use ML with confidence.

Feature Requests / Re: Better Image Quality

"i hope anyone will think to implement this great feature in future magiclantern releases."

What is THIS "great feature," hmm?

P.S. If you flip your 550D upside down, the picture quality becomes 99.

Shoot Preparation / Re: how to get cinema-movement?
August 02, 2013, 04:23:20 PM
My 2 cents:

The term "filmic" (which is often used to describe a "cine" look) is HIGHLY subjective.

I shoot RAW (on a 60D with 21/mbs write speed limitation) at 2.35:1, 1344 x 572 @ 18 fps.  I get over 2,000 frames per take.  18 fps is very common in (older) film, like Super 8 (which is STILL used for trailers, shorts, and a few feature films in the UK).

I do NOT use a 180 degree shutter.  It destroys detail by way of excess motion blur.  Also, a 90 degree shutter (a la "Saving Private Ryan") is too staccato for my taste (@ 18 fps, I mean).  I use a happy medium of ~120 degrees (115 to be exact, 'cause that's as close as I can get with my ML config).

I up-res to 720p in Lightroom then export as 1080p @ 18 fps via Movie Studio 12.

Here is an 18 FPS motion test (I've also done testing @ 15 FPS, but 18 is NOW my go to config):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KaCsxLvvgTk

NOTE: YOUTUBE DESTROYS DETAIL!  The original is MUCH better.  It's not even close (for example, the white hair on my dog is totally blown out).

Do you mean don't use "Always ON" for video?

This is misleading as there any MANY options for ETTR.  You can certainly set the trigger mode to the SET button and use it that way when you're composing your scene.  Underexpose manually (on purpose) a tad, press the SET button, let ETTR do its "thing" then press record.  If you get a "Whoops," adjust the exposure manually.  Easy.

Raw Video / Re: 60D RAW video - it's working !!!

I was getting the same results with Davinci Resolve, (without lv_af_raw). With Camera RAW (AE),

Try this frame with Camera RAW: https://app.box.com/s/ah4dzr53700foxyihp6 With Resolve (posted early), it's a mess of bad pixeles. Useless.  Shot at 1728 2.35

Personally, Davinci Lite on a PC (for those using one) is FUBAR.  It gave me all sorts of hot pixilated effects--totally unusable.  Me: raw2dng, Lightroom 5 (rendered out as Jpgs to keep the file size down), Movie Studio 12 = no hot pixels at all.

No suggestion should EVER end with, "...I have no idea how it works."

Nope.  The FACT that you installed it is STILL on the NSA computers.  Sorry!

Not gonna happen, 'cause:

($1 / 434 + {6 * 2} - (that horseshoe looking thingy / 2) & * 1 + (4550334 * 0) * (1 / .4545 * (12^3)) (uh, looks like a weird letter "E") - #@# % * 79 <? <> & == 0) * 0

(Note: for symbol replacements, see the "Symbol Replacements Table.")

See what I mean?

Shelved?  Don't think so...to cool for school.

As far as I know, it goes like this:

God->1%->marekk->cthornhill->Yuppa->To the cleaners... (For you "Real Genius" fans out there!)

So unless you can insert yourself in this chain above ME, we're just going to have to wait.  The others (Devs and Demi-devs) are:

A) Super busy with other stuff...
B) Making really useful mods in other areas...
or
c) Learning to do stuff.

Though I'm a 60D guy, I like to hang out here:

http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=6913.0

and here

http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=1565.0

to keep up on this cool feature (as it's currently available).

One last thing, it's really hard to develop on a body you don't own, so if you're rich--personally or family--send a 60D to 1% and a 5DM3 to me...hey, I thought of it.

Does anybody have any experience with this lens?  DxOMark rates it highly, "This makes it the 5th best APS-C zoom lens tested on the Canon EOS 7D!"

http://www.dxomark.com/index.php/Publications/DxOMark-Reviews/Sigma-17-70mm-f2.8-4-DC-Macro-OS-HSM-C-Canon-review-The-Above-Standard-Zoom

As I do a LOT of video, I'm most interested in OS (Sigma) noise vs. Canon IS noise.  And yes, I know an external mike is best.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RKAjKfF8OS4&noredirect=1

Not a lot on YouTube about this NEW "C" version. I'm looking for examples (especially videos testing noise) and thoughts--that's all.

Pretty sure you can search for this, here, lemme do it:

@Critical Point

My understanding, reading ~100 posts for every question I ask (or searching for the answer), is that mb/s is ISO dependent.  To get mb/s THAT high, you need to up your ISO.  And ExFat does NOT affect write speed: that just gets you past the 4GB limit.

Raw Video / Re: 60D RAW video - it's working !!!

@marekk

Works for me--this is great!  Only issues are (and I have no idea what this is like on the 5DM2):

1) The buffer meter flickers a bit when the black border is engaged.
2) On the RAW video menu, the "Recording frame" has "Black bars" (which in my mind translates to "letterboxed") as a choice, but I think "Black border" or "Black mask" or even "Black cutout" is more intuitive--if anybody else cares.

These are minor nick-picks.

Great job and thanks again!

@ pewpow

Being new to the forum, you should really read about 100 posts before posting your 1st question.  Using the search feature is very useful and you would have quickly discovered the whole "SD thing" is not only is a dead horse but has been beaten to a pulp.

SD is a HARDWARE limitation: so unless you're willing to take your camera apart and fiddle with different SD controllers, assuming that would even work, it shall, forever and a day, remain a DEAD horse.

The 50D is hardly a solution: no audio and a new 60D—a better body is so many ways IMO—is going for $600 or so, while a GOOD 50D will run you around $500.  That's a half decent LENS!

1%'s Tragic Lantern has a really neat feature (600D only right now?) where you can control GOP and slice in H.264 (ALL-I), but that's back burner for now.  Many are hoping for that to get moved up the importance scale soon—and ported to the other SD bodies--but RAW (viz. 5DM3) and other things are where it's at right now.

"Any summary of best working raw video on canon DSLR's?"

Raw Video / Re: 60D RAW video - it's working !!!

@Britney T

1. YOU asked, "...why is this .mov file created?"  Answer: It's a prores version.
2. There are quite a few versions of raw2dng out there (both for the Mac and the PC).  It's really quite easy to ask the author of the version you're using, "Why does it do, 'X'?"  They are your best resource.
3. Thread litter (like asking the same question--on the same thread--over and over) is a HUGE issue on any forum.

Search and ask here:

@Kim.dh

Why don't you just press the shutter button all the way RIGHT after the bolt gets recorded?  You have to do it, sure, and it'll be 16:9, which is somewhat of a bummer, but it'll also be @ whatever quality setting you've set.  Large fine yields 5184 x 2912 on 18 MP crop sensor bodies.

I would try THAT and figure out your post processing--masking, blending, etc.  If there's any wind at all, the clouds--or trees (if applicable)--will have moved regardless.

The issue I see is the photo mode is controlled mechanically, by the mode dial (60D) or switch.  What's the system going to do when you programmatically switch it to photo mode when the dial or switch is in video mode?  Has that ever been tried before?

CORRECTION: the 5184 x 2912 is JPG, but in RAW (CR2), it's 5202 x 3465! What is that, ~3:2?

Yes, from 1%:

"It has to be rewritten because of new menus, etc."

The issue: whether to use the current GUI (of 2.3) or the latest nightly build...right?

I'd vote for newest, nightly (with RAW support), but I'm not the one driving this bus.  :)

Not the best view, but decent for my 1st attempt.

Body: 60D.
Global Draw: off.
Lens: old 18-55 kit lens.
State: hand held.
Threshold: 7500 or so.
Final: JPG, 15% compression.
Results: some pink and broken frames (12 of 64--taking 3 post frames for no reason really), but they were in ADDITION to the good frames, so it was a non-issue.  As far as I'm concerned, it worked like a charm!

#47
Body: 60D
Build: Latest compiled 60D Raw + BOLT_RAW

If you've racked your brain as to why you can't lower the shutter below 1/24.7 even with "Exposure Override" set to ON:

From mk11174 (excellent primer BTW):

http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=6303.msg55463#msg55463

"3. Turn on FPS to 15fps Low Light which is 14.985fps."

So...

This is in the "FPS override" menu (select the Video icon). Set "Desired FPS" to 15 THEN make sure to set "Optimize for" to "Low light".  This will automatically reduce the shutter to a range between 1/15.3 and 1/39.8 so you can set ~360 degree shutter.

I'm restating this again as this is critical to (my) success!  Just playing with hot light, I'm getting much better results, i.e. complete frames.  Only problem: where did the lightning go?

Thanks again to g3gg0 and mk11174 and...

RE: removal of white border (resolution indicator),

WOW...looks really good now!

Awesome, and thanks.

PS: I have no issue with resolution adjustment.  The 60D has a big buffer and bigger (resolution) is better IMO (and simplifies things, too).  And yes, I only have one (RAW or BOLT) on at any one time.

Raw Video / Re: 60D RAW video - it's working !!!

@SoulState

The only shutter lock I know of is under Movie (Video Camera Icon)->Movie Tweaks (press the "Q" button)->Shutter Lock.

Note: Before you set it to ON, make sure you set the shutter to the desired value FIRST.

@mk11174

FYI

Build: BOLT_RAW.MO from ("ML_550D_July_10_2013_Bolt_Trigger.zip") + latest compiled RAW build for the 60D.

Seems to work fine with bright light (desk lamp) testing--no lightning here in P'cola Florida right now, bummer.

One ?: is the 1 pixel (or so ) white screen border necessary?  I only ask because with the default ML screen layout, the white border at the top flickers from the audio level bars refreshing.  No biggie, just seems unnecessary as the resolution isn't customizable (that I know of).

Thanks to you and g3gg0 and 1% and...
