Went to the store to try out another battery.

Tried a new one, still no life signs.
Thought to myself "Oh well, just send it to repair."
Switched back to my first battery and Bam! It worked again.

I thank so much for the support I got from different directions. Some very helpful, some not so. (:

To clear things out.
The camera was never bricked, just battery failure after FPS overriding. Peace of cake.

congrats!

Alright, here's a new build. What has changed:

  * Fixed the crash when using file names without path (see previous postings)

  * Added the option to simply mark the pink dots as "Dead Pixel" which then leaves the actual color correction to your RAW tool

  * Due to popular request: added a simple GUI :)

Here's a screenshot:

Should be pretty self-explanatory. Throw in whatever files you find (e. g. by selecting whole directories). The tool should be pretty tolerant against unrecognized or unprocessable files. Try your luck. :)

If you want to, you can still use the tool on the command line or in scripts, just like before. The GUI is only started when you provide no or only invalid command line arguments.

I assume that now with the GUI a simple double-click on the JAR-file is sufficient if Java is properly installed on your normal (Windows-) working computer. However, I couldn't try it because I only have a (Linux) development computer here, which behaves a bit different.

Download the binary here:
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/22843507/MagicLantern/PinkDotRemover__004.zip

I hope the ZIP has everthing you need to run the GUI on a normal machine. Let me know if you face troubles.

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/22843507/MagicLantern/SimpleTIFFlib__004.src.zip

For those of you interesting in the source code:
The code is pretty crammed with debug messages now which makes it hard to read. I'll remove all the messages once this version proves to be more or less stable. And the GUI stuff lacks comments... you'll have to figure out yourself what's happening there... :P

Enjoy!

yes, on Windows machines, it opens with a double-click of the PinkDotRemover.jar file. Thanks!

Okay guys, short status update:

  * I'm currently modifying the tool to support dot locations stored in external files (not hardcoded in the tool anymore) and more cam types and resolutions

  * Mixer2 already patched the code and made it usable for the EOS M as well... I'll integrate that into the new version

  * Mixer2 also found out that you can handle many resolutions by just providing an offset to a few basic resolutions (e.g., the silent DNG). I'll provide support for that as well

Give me two or three days and by then I should have a new release out for testing....

thank foorgol, I've been wanting to play around with other sizes than the 1280 x 720

Guys, I desperately need a way to Downgrade my firmware back to the original 1.0.1 - I can't install ML without it, I can't find the original firmware anywhere :(

According to the Administrator, Nanomad, « Reply #286 on page 12 of this thread, you can't downgrade to 1.0.1. I'm not sure why, there are instructions for other canons on how to downgrade to an earlier firmware. But part of the reason might be that you may not be able to FIND that firmware. I spent a good part of a day looking for it for those who made the mistake you did. It wasn't there. Maybe because it's the firmware that comes with the camera and Canon would have no need to offer it to the public, only upgrades.

what & where is the pink spot removal tool?

Read from page 1 (only 2 pages) . Basically it's for the 650D which gets clusters of pink pixels when shooting raw video. This tool removes them, but only
for a 1280 x 720 crop selection in raw.

midnite, thanks for your answer, but i was actually asking for the HDR picture preview (sorry, i didn't explain myself clearly!  :-[ )

the best you'll get is that the LCD will show you the high iso then the low iso. If you watch a playback it will look like a strobe light
is on. It sounds like you're asking if there's a preview for the finished HDR, which there sadly is not. You just have to get a feel for
what is the right settings for certain light conditions.

does anyone know if it's possible to down grade mt 650d firmware from 1.0.4 back to 1.0.1 once i've already upgraded. ML won't work with the new firmware . Thanx in advance for your advice

I can't say for sure, but it seems like something you could do, if you could find a 1.0.1 .fir file (not on Canon's website) I went looking for one today, but couldn't find one.

Rawtherapiee program did a good job, but some pink dots are still visible. They are annoying as hell.

after using Rawtherapiee

http://oi43.tinypic.com/2mi1grp.jpg

I got this using the pinkdot removal tool

http://kozenrufu.com/_000116.jpg

First I set my canon movie record size to 1920 x 1080 (24fps)
Then I set ML to 1280 x 720, Aspect 16:9, Framing Center

It had all the usual pink dots before I ran the removal tool

Here's the video before and after.  Watch at 720p to clearly see all the pink dots

Sorry 1%, I am definitely in over my head at this point   :( I think we need Foorgol to check in about now. It does seem that if his program can
locate and zap those dots, that it could be incorporated into ML, which would be really great.

Note the monitor with "Hello World" on it at 2:26

I only get 1 size in LV and one size in zoom except when recording... the default LV is like 50D, stuck at low res. So only need 2 sizes.. actually 1 size.. no dots in zoom mode.

This should be built into chdk-dng.c... I just dunno how to mark the pixels exactly.

650D + eos M are different raw sizes tho.

I should mention that I output at 1280 x 720 and all the pink pixels seem to get eliminated.
On my canon settings I chose the 1920 x 1080 (24fps) before going into the ML and choosing
the 1280 x 720. That was the only way I could get that size at a data rate that the card can handle.

Thanks for the data!

Just by quickly looking at the log messages, I realized that I might have made a very stupid beginner's mistake: I blindly assumed that all picture file names always have a path component, i. e. "/this/is/your/picture.dng" and not just "picture.dng".

I'll fix it tonight, should be a no-brainer.

In the meantime you can try to call the program like

java -jar PinkDotRemover.jar .\5.dng  or java -jar PinkDotRemover.jar ./5.dng   (depending on your OS)

or simply have pictures and tool in different directories. If my assumption above is correct (haven't looked at the code yet), this should fix your issues for the time being.

what worked for me was to create a folder, then a subfolder and from the folder to use this syntax:
java -jar pinkdotremover.jar subfoldername
then all .dngs in the subfolder would get converted

For setting the system path variable, select the start icon, then computer, system properties, advanced system settings,
environmental variables. In the system variables window, scroll down to path and edit it. At the end of the variable, add
this

;C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre7\bin

then keep selecting ok until you back out of that section
of course, that's for Win7, 64bit. If you have a different OS, then append the variable with wherever your java.exe is located.

to update ML I just replace the existing files with a newer builds filer and Im good to go or do I need to repeat some steps?

yes, replace the autoexec.bin and the ML folder

Do you mean that if you insert an sd without ml, you still booth ml?

Sorry, that was a mistake. I didn't think I put ML on any other card but my 2 Sandisk Extremes. But I did. So no, you have
to have ML on the card.

No light.
I didn't touch 1.0.4 firmware update from Canon.
Used ML_N_17.06.2013 when the muddle started, now I'm not even using a sd card to make sure ML isn't badly configured.
I use win7x64 as host(?).

What will press & holding the set button actually do?

The light only flashes when there's an SD card in your camera. If I take my card out
and don't close the SD door and turn the camera on, I get nothing. With the card still out,
and the SD door closed, then I get a screen that says "no card in camera", then the usual
M, shutter speed, fstop #, ISO, etc screen.

I saw that there was a firmware update for the camera that fixes some stuff in combination with 18-135 STM lens. I am having some problems with this lens. A lot of Focus problems and sometimes it says that there is no lens connected to the camera. Am I the only one with these problems?

the admin for development for the 650D has said that magic lantern won't run with the canon firmware update at this point, so it's a take your choice for the time being

I said on an earlier post that raw silent pictures seems to have to much noise on high ISO, (other than the pink dots known bug) Here is an example. The first picture is  from ML Silent pic ISO 1600

And this picture is not even a raw! this is jpeg on Small Size from the canon menu, ISO 1600 also

There is absolutely no proccesing or whatsoever on each picture. Is it normal?

I think it's normal for the amount of light in the room

Ok guys, time to bother you with a new version of the pink dot remover! This time I added the dot locations for the silent DNGs. So now the program can process both, 1280x720 and 1734x965. Here's a "before" and "after" example of a silent DNG with identical RAW development settings and corrected aspect ratio:

\img
\img

Here's the binary, just unzip it and run java -jar PinkDotRemover.jar <YourFileNameOrDirectory> in the shell:

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/22843507/MagicLantern/SimpleTIFFlib__003.src.zip

By the way: I was wrong in one of my previous posts; the programm definitely requires Java 1.7... sorry...

thanks so much for your work on this, it works very well, much better than Rawtherapee, although that works relatively well, but still leaves some dots.
If you do use Rawtherapee, use version 3, version 4 kept crashing on me with Win7
It took me awhile to find out I needed to set my environmental variable path so that Windows could locate the java command, but now it works well.

Watch at 720 HD, dots are most noticeable

For Sandsnor,
If you don't have a 2nd battery, I would go to Best Buy or somewhere and get one, that would rule out
that possibility. Radio Shack has them for $22. Lenmar LP-E8

User Introduction / Hi from NC. USA
May 27, 2013, 05:04:40 PM
I got interested in ML specifically from a video I saw by Luke Neumann using ML to film the inside of houses without
having the windows all blown out. This had been an issue I was struggling with. Do I buy lots of expensive lighting?
Do I film only during the magic time of day (sundown)? Do I film at night? Too much light coming in thru windows definitely
is not an attractive thing for filming. And the HDR video function definitely fixes that issue. I am specifically trying to become
a real estate videographer so I haven't really played with any of the photography improvements that ML offers. Maybe I'll try
and add photography in the future once I've mastered real estate filming. Many thanks to all the developers and other members
who have helped to bring this great software to us canon users!  Don

thanks for the answers, i just realized i need to set my iso setting manually. (it was set to auto) now i can record HDR videos. thanks all.

This is a valuable resource for processing HDR video. Jump ahead in the video to 4:45 as he has a 5D Mark III. He made a couple of mistakes in his directions, one he says that avisynth opens first, but it's virtualdub that gets open. After virtualdub has separated the lights from the darks, then avisynth combines them and finally imports them into virtualdub where you need to set your framerate (unless you want 25fps) and set your compression, then save your avi from within virtualdub. There is a script file where you can change the fps default and the compression default so that you don't have to do it everytime. If you want to do this, set your framerate and compression then select file, export settings and name a file. Then go into that file and copy those lines into the \HDRWorkflow\scripts\hdr_join.vcf script file. Then you go to the frames folder and delete all the files there.

thank you all for your input.

it looks like the size of the card might be the problem however that's the only card i have.

* i cleared my settings
* i downloaded bright new .fir file
* all the files (ML folder, autoexec.bin a 650D-safe_dumper.fir) are in the root of the card (as in the tutorial video)
* chkdsk found no errors

the next step is to find another card and try it all again.

any experience with using a big card? mine is SanDisk Extreme SDXC I 64GB 45MB/s, the one I bought with the camera.

can anybody please test the card to see if that's the problem?

Looks like your card IS the problem. You can't use a larger than 32 gb card for first install (updating firmware), but you can run ML
on it after you've updated the firmware

Magic Lantern Unified - Install Tutorial(03:22)

Step 1. Preparing your camera

Fully charge your battery
Remove any accessories from your camera (such as battery grip or external flash)
For first install, use a simple SD/SDHC/CF card (32 GB or smaller). 64GB cards and larger will not work for first install (but you can use them with ML

Best Buy has 2GB cards for $4

the instructions posted by donjames are accurate but to get it to install for me i had to go into menu > 4 dot spanner > Clear Settings > clear all camera settings before the install would work for me.

i also used a 2GB and 16GB card, not tried on my 32GB (currently has footage from a live project on it) and i dont have a 64GB.

i also didnt get the green boot disk screen but i have a 3 day old build installed and most features work as already stated.

Massive thanks go out to Nanomad and the rest of the team for all this hard work.

you are right, that's something I forgot in my instructions. I had cleared my special settings  ::)

thanks donjames150.
these are the exact instructions i have followed and the comments of others made me confident to test it.
i know it worked for them and i don't understand why it doesn't work for me...

Try all steps again. Sometimes a file (such as the .fir file) doesn't copy correctly and doesn't indicate that it didn't copy incorrectly. If that
doesn't work, try rebooting your computer and then re-download the .fir file and copy to your card. I have all sorts of strange things happen
if I don't reboot regularly.

Another thing to do is a disk check on your card, it's a long shot but something is wrong :-)

well i have tried to follow the instructions to install the preAlpha.

when i try to update the firmware (1.0.1) i am getting "update file cannot be found" error message.
The 650-safe-dumper.fir  (size 216,124b) is on my SanDisk Extreme SDXC I 64GB card that was previously low-level formatted.

what am i doing wrong? i have tried it several times with no success. even downloaded the file again, but still the same message.

cheers for help

This has worked for several people here who have had trouble getting ML installed:

This is what worked for me:

Create a magic lantern folder on your hard drive

Download http://nanomad.magiclantern.fm/650D/magiclantern-v2.3.NEXT.2013Apr30.650D.PreAlpha2.zip (unzip all files to your ml folder on your hard drive)

On your camera select menu, first wrench icon, format card

download https://bitbucket.org/hudson/magic-lantern/src/99bd629f7c5712346369840e64c04fd2d4576520/platform/650D.101/devkit/650D-safe-dumper.fir?at=unified, then copy the .fir file to your card and put it back in the camera.

With the cam in manual mode, go to last wrench setting before star, fimware ver, set,  select ok, then my menu settings will read enablebootdisk :)

Put your card in the computer and download http://pel.hu/down/EOScard.exe and run this program

Check EOS Devlop and Bootdisk boxes, save

Check the card, if EOS card wrote any files, delete them

Copy from your ML folder these files: ML folder, autoexec.bin and 650D-safe-dumper.fir to your card

Put card in camera and press the trashcan button after it boots, then the left arrow button to the left of the set button
