Way easier if you use the pre-configured virtual machine ;)

Where can I get the VB image and does it have the latest ML source?

My question is how safe is ML for the 650D in the current state? I saved up for literally 2 years to get a DSLR. That being said would any of the devs here say it's safe but just not complete or any tips on running it and avoiding bricking?

If I am correct this is the source code from last month. If you have the skills you can compile your own version from this code. Unless you know what you are doeing I would not advise this

There is no precompiled public version available at the moment. A closed alpha is a viable to selecte testers, however this is still an early version. However progress is being made and when it's safe it will be released.

There are no real skills required to compile the source code but I understand why you advise against it since it may brick your camera but I think people that want to go for it should know how easy it really is to compile. 1: ./configure, 2: make, 3: make install.

Thought i'd try to shed some sunlight on this thread. I am an aspiring filmmaker and got my T4i 3 months ago and went with Canon for my first DSLR mainly for ML. I am a long time Linux user and could easily compile the pre-alpha myself but it took me about 2 years to get my first DSLR and would rather play it safe and wait. I fully trust and appreciate everything the ML team is doing and will patiently wait for an official release.

How are you going to take the digic package apart? Lasers?

I agree, this is getting silly. We are discussing a serious ML release for a camera that actually exists not building a new one or a Frankenstein 650D. I am happily awaiting any release, beta or otherwise and will test it on my baby anytime. Thanks guys.

Thanks for the update Nanomad and all your hard work. Truly appreciated.

Nanomad, you are accepting donations to help you with the development of ML for 650D?

I believe there was a previous post in this thread that said they had all the funding needed and posted a link to a cause that helped with copyright stuff or something similar. I suggest reading this whole post. I will keep checking back to hear about any updated towards the progress of ML for the 650D(T4i).

Hi!

I have a 650D, and maybe I can help by testing the 'closed doors alpha' versions, if needed.

I have experience with CHDK on my SX110, which I used for years.

If I can be helpful, please contact me.

Congratulations for the job with Magic Lantern. I read the userguide and watched some videos. It's really (really!) impressive.

Not sure how they pick there closed door Alphas but i'm guessing it's people that have been active in the ML community for a while. I'd test it too as well as anyone that has posted in this thread i'm sure. Open Beta is going to be the earliest we see it I would guess.

Hi guys,

Sorry to chase but any idea when a public beta might be available?

Or is it very much like Debian; "It will be done when its done"?

Many thanks to all the devs and I am willing to test the beta (gather its a closed alpha at the moment?)

Cheers guys

Phillips321

Long time Debian user, never expected to see a Debian ref here. Funny one too, haha.

Nikon fanboys trolling the ML forums I see.

Same boat here.  I waited a few months to purchase my T4i because of the grip/rubber issues.  Now that I have had it a couple of months, a new model gets released.  This always seems to happen when I finally buy something expensive.  *sigh*  Oh well, at least now that I have my first DSLR, I can start learning.

I realized I had an extended return period due to being a silver member at my retailer and could have returned my T4i but I got it for such a steal at $639.99 new with 18-55mm lens plus the only added features the 700D has is really just digital zoom and MJPEG from what I hear. Even if I payed full price I think i'd keep the 650D just for ML since it's close to Alpha now and it was a big selling point for me.

Looks like the same camera but they put back the crop zoom, that is probably the most irritating thing of all unless they offer a firmware update to enable it in the t4i.

What? They added crop zoom to T5i? I really didn't know about moire when I made my purchase. Would be really nice if that firmware update actually happened but I doubt it.

Edit: Maybe this can be done through ML(can't believe I didn't think of this before)? if so it is a feature that will be implemented in the 650D ML release?

That totally burns! My main concern is getting a proper build with Kelvin WB controls on the 650d before its abandoned (if it gets abandoned). Also, the 700d will likely not take a whole lot of work for the port from wherever the current build of 650d ML is at the time of that project start, considering it's basically a T2i-T3i type of jump. The 700d is basicallty a slightly tuned 650d.

Why the hell did Canon have to make a t5i so damn fast?!

Right. I finally got my first DSLR after wanting one for about 2 years. Got a T4i a little over a month ago and haven't even got to really use it yet and now the T5i. I really hope ML for the T4i doesn't get scrapped, if that happens i'd have to sell my T4i for a loss. Yeah ML being in development for the T4i was honestly a pretty big factor when I purchased.

If there is any testing I can do with my 650D I would be pleased to help out if I can, will be making a donation once the alpha is out :)

You can try the alpha but have to compile it yourself. I thought about doing it myself but think i'll just wait. You obviously have to have experience compiling software.

hello, i am new to this post and have recently looked into magic lantern for my canon 650D.

A friend of mine downloaded it yesterday for his 550D and it looks amazing.

i was wondering if anyone has any idea when it will be available for the 650D?

I see you are new so I would suggest reading this post from beginning to end and if you still have the same question I will give you my personal phone number and answer it in person. I want ML and so does everyone else who has a 650D and wants more control. I originally thought ML had some funding but as far as I know it's an unfunded project(this needs to change) and the ML release for the 650D(T4i) is being coded by one person alone. I believe you can donate if you want to help, just please be patient.

User Introduction / Hello from Chicago - 650D(T4i)
March 16, 2013, 08:35:34 AM
Hi, my name is Matt and I am a new to the world of DSLR. I got into video a few years ago when I won a Sony Bloggie in a video editing contest and knew nothing about any of it at the time. During the contest I really got into VFX and continued making videos but quickly realized the "camera" was holding me back. I have been looking into Canon DSLR's and have been following ML loosely for a couple years. I have had my 650D(T4i) for a little over a month and am comfortable with it and all it's settings even though it is my first time using a DSLR. I think I read every article and watched every video regarding basic DSLR settings(ISO, Aperture, Shutter, WB, PS, focus, etc.). I aspire to make short films but have been talking about getting this camera and making videos for so long I already have one person interested in my filming and editing a documentary and another wanting the same done for a music video. I just wanted to say Hi and tell a little about myself since I just noticed this forum section, and to say how excited I am for the 650D ML release.

Been following Magiclantern for a couple of years now and finally got my first DSLR a month ago(T4i). Pretty impressed after reading these posts so far and can't wait to try it. If you need a ML newbie to test let me know.
