Since I haven't had any time this year to do any photography or video work, and not to mention that my phone is with me everywhere I go, I've found a few apps that enable the capture of raw (dng format) pictures on a few of the Android devices with android 5.1 or higher (requires the camera2 api).

One of these is a free app called FreeDcam, found at https://github.com/troop/FreeDcam. There are a few more but most of them cost a few dollars. Unfortunately, the Galaxy S6 I have doesn't yet have complete support for dng capture, so while the app is able to take dng's and view them, the default gallery doesn't recognize them, thus requiring another app like Lightroom or Photoshop to edit them.

Quality is another issue. The lenses on mobiles don't hold a candle to our wonderful L series or vintage primes, but fortunately they improve with every generation of phones. In lowlight, the shutter slows down to 1/10, which can be pretty annoying if you don't have image stabilization on. The Galaxy S6/Edge received pretty great scores on dxomark, so not all hope is lost.

Editing is straightforward, I've only tried a few dng's in the Photoshop mobile app but I felt like the images had a good amount of image information. Adjusting highlights, shadows and exposure responded very well, and the sharpening/NR adjustments were decent as well. I'll try to upload a few dng's if anyone is interested.

Maybe in the coming years, especially with mobile processors and cameras improving every year, we'll have raw video capabilities in the palm of our hands. It may even be possible now, depending on each phone's ability to dump raw data to memory quickly enough to give a decent resolution.

Thoughts or experiences?

Shot over the course of a few months at different performances around the state. 7D, Rokinon 35mm cine, recorded mostly in 2.2k and 2.5k MLV.

Converted with MLVFS, rendered through After Effects with ACR, edited with FCPX. Osirus Lut's for color grading. Really pleased with the skin tones and the stage lighting, the color reproduction we get with raw files is beautiful. I also wrote the beginning and ending monologues.

Shoot Preparation / 7d FPN and iso 6400
January 31, 2015, 11:45:09 PM
I've found that fpn (fixed pattern noise, or vertical stripes in shadows) is blatantly obvious at iso 3200, somewhat at 1600, but at iso 6400 it becomes hardly noticeable, and there is a significant difference in sharpness and color accuracy at 6400, which is to be expected. But is iso 6400 a digital push from 3200, from a lower iso or an actual analog iso? The difference can clearly be seen going from iso 4000 to 5000 in 5x zoom. It almost looks as though 6400 is a push from 1600?

7d, Sigma 30 1.4, shot in 2.2k for the long takes and 2.5k for the fill-ins. Converted with MLRawViewer, rendered out of AE, edited in FCPX.

Share Your Videos / Campaign Commercial shot on 7d Raw
November 02, 2014, 09:43:09 PM

Shot in crop mode 1080p with the sigma 30 1.4 and vocals done with the on-camera mic. Rendered out of AE as 4444 XQ into FCPX, edited, then back to AE for a bit of denoise and grading with one of the Osirus LUT's.

Share Your Videos / Campaign Ad Shot with 7D Raw
October 09, 2014, 05:31:56 PM

I shot this campaign ad for a candidate running for US House of Representatives on the 7D, in MLV 2.2k and 2.5k. They needed a quick turnaround on it so I did some basic color correction, no real grading though. Also recorded and mixed the audio for it. Looks like the Youtube compression screwed up the color and gamma slightly, especially on his skin tone.

Shot with the Sigma 35mm 1.4 and a Pro Am 8 ft. jib crane.

I've been shooting almost all my projects lately in 2.2k or 2.5k MLV, seeing as how we can record for more than a minute in 2k widescreen ratios (2240x938 in particular) with sound AND GD enabled. Only thing is, Greyscale is fine for framing but for monitoring the shot properly, Canon preview is essential, imho.

Is it possible to implement the ML Greyscale, or even color preview, to display when half shutter is pressed during Canon 5x preview? It would be a godsend to have this enabled during recording to check framing occasionally, but I'd even be satisfied if it were only available while not recording, so we wouldn't have to spend so much time opening the MLV menu and toggling the different previews every time we need to frame a crop shot.

Or is this already available, and I completely overlooked it?  :P

Just good ole' h264 video done with the bitrate/GOP hack, Rokinon Cine lens, ProAm crane, VisionTech PS, and graded with the Osiris LUT's.

I recorded and mixed the song as well as the shooting/editing of the video.

I'd love to see a unified program capable of processing anything that ML spits out, and possibly communicate with ML through usb to pc/mac for syncing purposes. Right now we need seperate scripts to process raw_rec, mlv and dual iso CR2's (correct me if I'm missing something).

We get frequent script updates for the existing processing tools so it gets difficult to keep track of the latest updates, not to mention that some of our gui's were made months ago and haven't been updated since (especially for us mac users). We all want to maximize our cameras' potential, but it's also easier when things are streamlined and categorized more efficiently as well.

What I propose is a gui like the old ML Tools, but with all-encompassing processing capabilities. This program should be for pc and mac, and be updated directly when new scripts are released. It would be able to automatically import files from the card, detect the file type, and provide options for each. It would keep everything organized in one root folder and exports would be saved to their own sub-folders by default, with an option to save elsewhere. The program should also be able to erase and replace new builds as they are released, for when users are weary of deleting the wrong files themselves.

What I could imagine is that this program be available for free to people who've donated to the ML team, and have a fee for all other users, which would go back to the ML team for future advancements. Updates to each individual processing tool could be applied directly to the program and have notifications pop up when new updates are available.

ML has come a LONG way and has made a vast amount of features available to use on our beloved cameras. I believe that this program could take ML to the next step and create a simplified way for advanced users, beginners, and everyone in between. Suggestions are welcome, but please keep it on topic.

No raw goodness today, sorry. Shot on 600D with the Rokinon Cine, VBR -16 bitrate, GOP1, VisionTech PS. Graded with the Osiris KDX LUT.

Language is definitely NSFW.

Nothing special, just a quick test of VisionColor's VisionLOG v1 ACR profile, as well as their Vision X LUT.

Shot on the 600D in raw video, 1280x544 resolution. Rokinon 35mm cine lens, rendered out of AE and edited in FCPX.

Graded this before the VisionLOG v2 came out, so v2 would probably hold the DR a little better.

I'm falling in love with the Osiris LUT's, so easy to get "that" look on our fragile little Canon footage. Just remember to denoise your footage first.

Stock h264 video vs raw upscaled. There's definitely some aliasing in the raw upscaled but the results were much closer than I expected. Seems to me that ACR Process 2003 upscales better.

Exposure changed in 3x zoom mode for some reason, but I wanted to leave the stock videos untouched.

General Chat / Cameras with downloadable features
May 29, 2013, 09:02:17 PM
Crazy thought.

A company like Canon offers a large number of camera models with different bodies, features, etc. It's clear that these cameras are capable of so much more in light of the recent accomplishments of the ML team. So why not let consumers decide which capabilities they'd prefer through downloads that offer different sets of features?

We already have this idea implented successfully in video games and other forms of entertainment. So why not offer it on higher priced electronics, especially cameras? The firmware "upgrades" are free, sure; but what if we wanted something more specific? It would work the same way as the upgrades but would let us customize our cameras exactly how we wanted them. Also, companies would continue to profit from camera models for years after whenever they released new features for particular models.

Or maybe I'm just ahead of my time. Who knows.

Just happened to be at the beach a few days after the 600D raw build came out and was able to get some great test footage.

A couple of the shots were shaky from holding the cam and the strong beach wind, sorry! Those builds still had bad pixel issues but its since been fixed. Also, looks to be some aliasing and banding in the vimeo version that wasn't there in the original. The dolphin shot toward the end was 10x zoom, hence the roughness of that clip.

Rokinon 35mm Cine on the 600D, denoise and exposure/wb adjustments in ACR, exported to Prores 4444 and edited in FCPx with some slight color correction.

While posting an image the other day, the image button, Mona Lisa, made me think of Da Vinci. What if the greatest painter in history was limited to painting his masterpieces on stone tablets with sticks and leaves?

Ok, stupid analogy, but it got me thinking about 14 bit vs 8 bit, and how it gives us a much better "canvas" to capture our images. But what's the point if you're editing your beautiful, 14 bit raw videos on a Macintosh Color Classic?

I've been shooting raw 600D (1152x480 rez) videos for the past week while on vacation and editing them on my 3 year old, 13" MacBook. Got home and watched them all on the 27" iMac I usually do my editing on, and was pleasantly surprised to see the amount of detail and clarity they retain, even after being stretched across a 2560x1440 display.

Ok, to the point. What are your experiences with different displays, namely their color reproduction, bit depth, resolution, calibration, etc.? Best and worst experiences? Tips, advice, yada yada.

Tragic Lantern / 600D/T3i Raw Video
May 18, 2013, 04:16:46 PM
PLEASE READ THROUGH THE FOLLOWING LINK FOR GENERAL RAW VIDEO INFO-
http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=5520.0

The 600D (T3i) is capable of continuous raw video recording, but on a smaller scale than 5d ii and 5d iii. We're limited to a 21 MB/s sd write speed, even with the top-of-the-line Sandisk 95 MB/s sd card.

All hope is not lost though, seeing that 720p quality is well within our reach. I've had the best results shooting in ntsc 640x480 video mode with the newest build by 1%, recording with continuous frames at 1152x464 (2.50:1), up-rezzed to ~ 1280x512 in post, and 16:9 aspect of 960x540, which also uprezzes nicely. Not sure if it still matters with the newest builds but I leave pic quality on sRaw for a bump in buffer memory. If you accidentally take pics in sRaw and can't get them to open, try Canon's Digital Photo Professional.

As far as which sd card to use, the faster the better. Seems like cards that are 30 MB/s can't quite keep up, so we'll likely have to stick with cards that are AT LEAST 45 MB/s and up. Formatting them as exfat helps with the 4 GB file limit, as well.

I've posted a couple vids in the share your vids forum, and I'll upload some dng's or prores 4444 files if anyone is interested. Drop your suggestions, bug finds, preferred settings, etc in here, and I'll keep this original post updated as new developments come along.

Download various builds here (top is newest)-
Obsolete link removed - Please use the official nightly builds //Audionut
This build is still in testing, PROCEED WITH CAUTION.

Update: The newest build has Dual Iso, ETTR and file manager modules. The nightly 600D build now has raw enabled as well, but some users are reporting corrupt frames.

Share Your Videos / 600D Raw, ISO 2800 Test
May 17, 2013, 01:53:14 PM

Raw 1280x400 in 640x480 mode.

ISO 2800
T-Stop 5.6
24 fps
1/24 Shutter
Rokinon 35 Cine

The noise came out pretty well with ACR editing, but the youtube compression smeared the details quite a bit.

Then there's the little red and blue "dots", pixels, something.... Only prominent at high iso.

This is a short promo video for an upcoming author from my area, he runs a Christian organization for youth. This book talks about his experiences and his growth into where he's taken his life.

Shot on two 600D's, bitrate maxed out, and either flaat or vision color, don't remember which lol.

Lenses were sigma 30 1.4 and Canon 50 1.8.

Done with 1%'s ML build, max bitrate and gop3 frames. Rokinon 35mm cine and Sigma 35mm 1.4 lenses, Delta Vision and Visioncolor pic styles. Thoughts?

We just had a blizzard here in Virginia so I decided to take advantage of it, headed out at 7 am with the 600D and a Sigma 30 mm 1.4.

Used the VisionColor PS, and 1%'s ML build. Stands up VERY well to CC and editing, but I only spent a few minutes on the actual editing.

Youtube degraded the quality pretty significantly, guess they aren't too fond of ProRes uploads.

I love the Sigma for low light and close shots, but the focus just isn't very sharp for items in the distance.

These were all shot on the 600D with a sigma 30mm 1.4, running ML 2.3. Still learning the ins and outs of color grading but the compliments we've gotten so far have been outstanding. Awesome software, will be donating soon to the cause.

P Magik - Primo. First green screen video.

Promo for a new song. Excuse the wobbly shots, kinda hard to shoot out of the trunk of a moving car going 50 mph.
