The SanDisk Extreme Pro SDHC/SDXC UHS-1 Memory Cards (2011) perform at 95 MByte/s..
SD cards can be as fast as CF cards, but no producer has hitherto implemented controllers that do the speed, into their devices.

do you believe that could be possible to destroy the limit? for example could be theoretically possible to destroy the 550D 21 Megabyte/s write speed limit? or the limit is a hardware factor?

thx!

Well, uncompressed 14-bit 1920 X 1080 videos are 3.46 Megabyte per frame.
Uncompressed 12-bit 1920 X 1080 videos are only 2.97 Megabyte per frame.

So uncompressed 12-bit videos are almost 15% smaller than uncompressed 14-bit videos. So instead of 83 Megabyte/s 12-bit videos need only 71 Megabyte/s write speed. And since Blackmagic adds some kind of compression, the size should be reduced by 20-50%. But since the BMPCC isn't released yet and the specs site doesn't say anything about the type of compression, I can't tell you for sure.

There were some tests with compression but they failed and as far as I know nobody tries to continue them at the moment.
So it's probably impossible to get the Magic Lantern RAW videos compressed.

I think the images on the Blackmagic website are a bit overstated. Of course, the H.264 videos have only 8-bit but they aren't that bad. Still, with 14-bit color depth we have 64 times more information than with 8-bit. There's no doubt that the higher values are better ;D

ok I'll wait! :) thank you for help! have a nice week!

The Blackmagic cameras record (lossless) compressed 12-bit RAW videos. The Canon DSLR record uncompressed 14-bit RAW videos.

That means that the Magic Lantern videos are way bigger. So it's impossible to record RAW videos with slow write speeds. But Canon's SD-Controllers are really slow so that they can't handle the required write speeds. The 550D has a 21 Megabyte/s write speed limit. But uncompressed 1920 X 1080 14-bit RAW videos require 83 Megabyte/s write speed.

thx for reply, how many megabytes write speed require the compressed 12-bit RAW videos? could be possible to port it on 550D?

thx for help!

p.s.

here some example of  compressed 12-bit RAW videos differences

hello, I have read that the new hack on the canon's is capable to have RAW shooting in video! I have also read that is very important to have a CF slot because as much fast the card is ad much high pixel resolution you can take on a single frame. meanwhile I have discovered the BPCC (Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera) and it is capable to shoot in RAW 1080p on SD cards.

I wish to ask you wich is the difference?
Why the BPCC can shoot at 1080p RAW on SD cards but the Canon 550D can not?

thx a lot for the explanation!

I think an easier solution is just to record normally at 23.976 (or 24000/1001 to be exact), assume exactly 24 fps in the software, and speed up the audio proportionally. I bet the change in audio pitch will be imperceptible.
For true cinema theaters must make the movie at 24p. So if the movie is delivered at 25p they must slow down the movie and the audio. Also, if it is 23,976 they must speed it up a little bit. This means (they said) that the audio quality is compromised. And in a good theater you can ear the difference from the original.
In the studio of specialists that I visited they work very hard to mix the audio (dolby, they had James Cameron in that studio for example) that then it's burned with the video (on a HDD with a strange adapter) and delivered in all the cinemas of my country. They also said that some very bad theatre, speed up the movie a little bit, so they can put one more advertising (because if the movie is speed up (I believe at 23,976), so they have maybe some minute more of space to introduce one more advertising). This result a bad audio for their standard of quality.

So they said to me until nausa "for cinema use always 24p"! I can tell you if I close my eyes I can see them say this again like a nightmare because of all the number of times that all of them said this! :)

Hello to anyone, recently I have meet some specialists in video and audio and they all said to me "true cinema is at 24fps". in any advice on the audio/video they gave to me there was "use only 24fps  for cinema". those specialist operate with high level directors (cinematographers stars of the italian movie and from across the world, like also from Hollywood for example).
I wish to ask you if with ML is it possible to record at 24P instead of 23.976 fps. is it possible? I wish to do this in the Canon 600d european version.
thx!

Hello to you all, I'm an italian student I study cinema director and I'm here for my first post so I wish to say hello to anyone! :)

I have posted here in the 7D ML thread because I have a question about 7D with magic lantern: I have not this DSLR but my teacher do have it. I have talked about this firmware to him a lot of times to let him know about this 'meraviglia' so at the end he asked to me to get information about how to try it. I belive I can help him to do it installing the firmware by following your tutorials and many guide around the web (youtube, etc, etc...).
I need to know if possible: can the current ML firmware for 7D archive the possibility to have custom bitrate? I have explained to my teacher that Magic Lanter allow the user to select custom bitrate to have some kind of "raw" files, I said him that having a super bitrate allow the filmmaker to work in post processing without the fear to loose in detail after having done the job. Can we do it with 7D and ML aready?
Is the firmware almost stable to install it to the 7D of my teacher (I risk my head eheheh)?

Thanks a lot for your help and having a good day,

Dan :)
