Hi, slog2 is a video format using s-curve to optimize the video for maximum DR. So this is not the logfile. The Sony high end camera's use slog2, canon does not. But using Davinci Resolve we can convert Canon RAW into s-log2 format.

The mac version can be downloaded here:

http://bitbucket.org/a_d_/magic-lantern/downloads

I also added the workflow in the video.

Here is my test, including the workflow to convert Dual ISO to s-log2 in Davinci Resolve
#6

Workflow:

  • convert DNG with cr2hdr

  • load DNGs into Davinci Resolve

  • apply LUT - linear to slog2

  • Happy grading :-)

I used the 1000x komputerbay. However quality differs, I have  3 cards 64GB and one of them has this good performance, others are slightly worse....
#8
You can use it as a pro if you pre-define mitigation of your risks: run out of storage and stability. Here is my 2 cents:

Using komputerbay 1000x ML raw works the best for me. However keep in mind you can record only 12 minutes on one 64GB card. For a pro shooter this can be an issue... unless you are able to use many cards or have offloading solution near by: I would suggest to have a laptop & storage there to "rotate" CF cards and do the DNG conversions on set. At the end of a daily session you have your storage pre-filled with DNGs and you can deliver to post. If you do not have that option and you need to shoot all day long, then I would switch back to old H.264 again.

Another issue is stability of the platform, sometimes it freezes and you need to get your battery out to restart. I am using "latest build" so if you use a proper release candidate it should be more stable and you should not get any freezes. So if you are in a "controlled"  set in which you can allow to redo or let people wait, then it is ok, but in case of sports (my situation) there is no chance of "redo"  so this can be a risk. In my case I use "breaks" or " timeout" events to swap cards & batteries which keeps the camera stable and you will not run out of CF storage space.

The great thing about raw is you can do a lot in post, use alternative resolutions for anamorphic shoot outs and image quality is so much better.

And here another 3K vid with 5D3 - korfball match with my kids

Anamorphic x2 settings: 1536x1290 24p

#10
You can record 4K with 5D3 if you lower frame rate. Please see test here:

http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=12253.0

Lenses:
  Kowa 8z lens
  Canon 85mm lens
Settings:
Anamorphic x2 settings: 1536x1290 24p
3K cropped: 2880x1206 12p
4K cropped: 3584x1320 12p

The Komputerbay 64GB card does not go beyond 112 MB/s (debug mode), this is why in 4K and 3K framarate has to be lowered.

Enjoy!

Raw Video / Re: Spanning

Hi, this is a blacklevel issue. You can fix it with exiftool and set Blacklevel to 2047, example:

exiftool -Blacklevel=2047 *.dng
#12
Got the same issue, green images, it only happens when shooting in cropped mode and changing FPS a lot, like 12 FPS. The blacklevel in my DNG's were 2470 (no this is not a typo!)

The way I solved it is using cmd tool, example:

open terminal

studios-mac-pro:M08-1453 studio$ cd /Volumes/EOS_DIGITAL/DCIM/100EOS5D/M08-1453
studios-mac-pro:M08-1453 studio$ exiftool -Blacklevel=2047 *.dng

Hope this helps

How will Canon 5D hold against 4K UltraHD Video?

Watch this: Magic Lantern RAW video, 3K vs 4K vs 1080P vs Anamorphic test

Camera: Canon 5D mk iii

Raw video test, 5D vs 50D

  • Image quality
  • Moire
  • Raw video vs 4K photo
Lenses:
5D3: Canon 85mm 1.8 full frame
50D: Canon 50mm 1.8 aps-c
Anamorphic Kowa prominar 8z

Magic Lantern V1.2.3 build 2014-05-23

Conclusion: image quality of 5D is much better than 50D, but the 50D is holding up quite well and will do very good as 2nd cam. As the 50D is now around 350,- on 2nd hand market, this is the ideal camera to start with when you want to shoot raw. The next interesting part is the comparison with a 4K photo: the raw video is holding quite well against the sharper photo, see the shots in 300% to see the difference.

How is it tested:
Canon 5D and 50D fixed on one "rig". Anamorphic lens screwed on 50mm or 85mm lens for widescreen cinema look. In ML the old RAW format is used, MLV is not yet stable. CF cardL 64GB Komputerbay.

In post:
Raw magic
Davinci resolve
FCP-X

Resolution used for Anamorphic shooting:
Select in camera: 1536 x 1290, then in post go to Clip Attributes in Resolve and select scope, this way the 2x anamorphic will be corrected to widescreen/cinemascope. Then in project you can choose whatever resolution you want, just normal 1080p or custom. In this video it is upscaled to 4K, to compare raw video with 4k photo in the end.

I am already shooting with raw_rec on 50D for a year, very stable with Komputerbay 64GB cards (Andy 600 build). Since few weeks have a 5D3 with latest 1.2.3 build, and experiment with MLV and raw. Please find my findings below:

Additional settings: Global draw off, extra hacks on, memory hacks on, buffer 4 and CF buffers 1:

  • MLV and sound on or off, does not matter => 1080p frame skipping, in 50% of the cases
  • The old raw_rec is indeed more robust and stable: 1080p, 24fps => continuous OK and 10 - 12% idle

Next to that the record "beep" does not work with MLV, this beep I use to sync external mic (Zoom H2N or other). So I decided to go back to good old raw_rec again  8)

Hi

For most anamorphic lenses you need 85 mm or more. Next to that most anamorphic lenses have much less quality than your Zeiss. I use a simple canon 85mm 1.8 with Kowa 8z and that is working great. Be prepared that this is less quality than your Zeiss prime, but for anamorphic shooting this works great.

Hi, they fixed it in MLV Mystic for Mac. There is a tick box Vertical Stripes Fix. If they are willing to share their code, maybe you can fix it also for the ML tools.

Hi

If you use MLV Mystic there is a tick box to fix the vertical "lines" in the DNG files: Vertical stripes fix. That works for me (5d3 v1.2.3)

Hello guys!

Does someone have already experience with the 2014-05-07 00:01:01 +0200 Build on 5D3.123  ? Im very affraid of killing my camera with the nightly build.
Is the new FFMPEG support already included ?

Greetings

Hi installed this release on 5D3 and tested with both raw and mlv. It is not stable yet, sometimes it hangs when IO rate is too high, but it will not kill your camera.

The ffmpeg I did not check, I use MLV Mystic for mac

50D raw test with sports.
Handheld, so little shaky
Canon 50mm 1.8 lens to experiment DOF. This was needed to prevent moire of building behind the sports facility.
ACR workflow and upscaled to 1080p. Added some sharpening, boost lows and reduced highs, no colour grading.

Hi, yes I compiled myself using your 12 august source. The default windows .exe in the dual_iso thread was causing the " green " issue for 50D and I needed Mac version. So ML developer has fixed it in the code already before my compile, but the mac binary was never out there.

Hi,

Installed Aug 17 build on my 50D today. I can not reproduce the bug above, so is working fine here. I prefer Tragic TL over ML, because it enables more seconds of recording in 1080p. Test today: avg 41 secs with 1920 x 1080 @ 24 fps. With ML is only a few secs. Also for dual iso: if you are using mac, you can use cr2hdr here:
http://www.gerstel.org/images/canon/dual_iso/cr2hdr
This also does not have the " green " issue.

BTW congratulations with the new website  8)

Cheers,
Jorgen

Here's some footage from a video I still have to edit, I did not see a lot of sport videos shot on 50D raw yet.

For run and gun shooting we found the battery life and data management was quite an issue, we shot over 250GB of raw footage that I will try to edit as a 20 minutes video.

I noticed one corrupt frame in the middle of one of the clips but that's the only issue/bug.

On H264 timelapses (fps override) we found the 50D would get really hot, but we did not get warning messages or shutdowns.

For this project I feel like the 50D was not the rigth tool at all but we got some beautyfull shots. My dream camera would be the 50D shooting prores 10 bit and with embeed audio, maybe the BMPCC would be a better tool for my use...

Anyways here is the footage :

Really cool video  8)
