Guys-

After numerous of different workflows and here I came to the quicker and easiest way but of course there are flaws. 10-bit vs 12-bit. BIG difference well according to my own set of eyes. I am positive that there will be an update rolling out soon for this remarkable software called MLRawViewer, which would allow you to view either MLV or RAW files from ML on both PC & Mac. Not only that it would also allow you edit (somewhat kind of) as well as to add a bunch of a different LUT's all on top of one and another. It's pretty jaw dropping and literally almost like a custom made version of SmallHD instantly in your hands. No Joke!

Yes, it's not perfect but just like everything else in life, you work around it and it'll come your way.

Definitely worth to check it out...

Happy Shooting!

Hello everyone again... I've been up and running around using latest nightly builds ML on my 5D3 for work purposes and I must admit that life without ML would have been horrendous. THANK YOU to A1ex once again!

Now this dream of ours has just gotten bigger with the installation of MLRawViewer 1.2.3 on my Mac. I've showed this amazing software to my managers at work and they are floored!!!

Now I can't wait to test them out with several LUT's that we mainly use for work on both 5D3 and 7D.

In case you guys aren't aware but I shoot for Time Warner Cable Sportsnet so I get the luxury to follow around Lakers, Dodgers, Galaxy and Sparks players. We also do intensive interviews and features using ML's useful features.

Again I can't imagine life at work for me without the usability that ML provides us.

Be in touch soon, Baldand! :)

Great find, a1ex and this is definitely a step closer in convincing my bosses to allow me install Magic Lantern on all of our 5D3's at work...

Since the shutter can be loud and annoying during studio recording and I've already been using the silent pic mode on my personal 5D3 as well as the 7D from work...

Keep up the good work, a1ex!

Should be something like this:

to check:
exiftool -BlackLevel -WhiteLevel foo.dng

to set the same value for all files:
exiftool -BlackLevel=8192 -WhiteLevel=50000 *.dng

(you can take the values from the first file, or some sort of average)

PM didn't arrive.

@a1ex -- sorry but I have to admit that after using Terminal last night and typing in the commands for Blacks/Whites values in exiftool is when I realized, after tonight, is the fact that it never did do anything in the first place. So now I'm not sure how I was still able to manage minimal flickering/artifacts in my 2nd Take.

Here's the info what it says on Terminal now as oppose to last night...

Sean-Jacksons-MacBook-Pro:~ SeanMichael$ exiftool -BlackLevel=8192 -WhiteLevel=50000 M03-1933.dng
Error: File not found - M03-1933.dng
    0 image files updated
1 files weren't updated due to errors
Sean-Jacksons-MacBook-Pro:~ SeanMichael$ exiftool -BlackLevel=8192 -WhiteLevel=50000 *.dng
Error: File not found - *.dng
    0 image files updated
1 files weren't updated due to errors
Sean-Jacksons-MacBook-Pro:~ SeanMichael$

Well here's Take 2...

I did it all over again with raw2dng/cr2hdr after adjusting the Blacks/Whites values in ExifTools through Terminal. (Thanks to A1ex!) Apparently it did help even out the flickering.

However, I do still see minimal flickering along with noisy aliasing but again I used the same XMP file for all three of them in ACR (8.2).

I will try and redo the rest when necessary...I am off to bed for now.

Enjoy and keep believing in Magic!

So I just typed that in my terminal and then I closed the terminal. Restarted my laptop. I plan on taking one of my RAW files and start the process all over again with raw2dng (0.13)/cr2hdr (1.6) [were you able to figure out the problem with the recent update for raw2dng yet?]

As of now -- I continue to use cr2hdr 1.6 and NOT 1.9 for DUAL-ISO Raw DNGs only -- is this still the correct way?

Although, I am still using the latest cr2hdr 1.9 for Dual ISO photos only and they still look great to me.

Also should I try to avoid certain controls in ACR or does that not matter anymore since I 'fixed' the issue regarding Black/White levels with ExifTool through Terminal.

Thanks again bud!
#3332
so from my understanding is that I type in "exiftool -BlackLevel=2048 -WhiteLevel=15000 *.dng" for each DNG's file or if I were to type that in terminal right now and it should automatically make all my DNG's in the same value from here on out with using Raw2dng/cr2hdr conversions?

Am I on the right path?

Thanks again for your time.
#3333
Point taken, A1ex! I actually had that in mind and went with the same XMP's for each scene (so three separate XMP's were used - One for each SCENE) in order to try and keep everything the same except for the Dual ISO's.

However, I've tried researching on ExifTool forums in attempt to learn and understand how to use ExifTool through Terminal. I am very well aware of how to use Terminal since I have jailbroken a bunch of Apple devices over the last several years and still do.

Still yet, I can't manage to get to see my Black and White levels on my DNG's in Terminal...I guess I'm just not sure what's to type in to navigate through my DNG files -- so I feel a little insecure to admit this to you. Thoughts?

Would it be reasonable enough for me to take down the tests that I've just posted online and do another testing that is proper according to your statements from earlier (which makes sense to me) after all.

Thanks for suggesting for me to change my FPS to 25 fps in order to avoid the "crawling" artifacts.

I'm still puzzled and not sure why it flickers and sometimes it doesn't? Even if it cr2hdr doesn't take care of that?

Appreciate your time & comments, A1ex!

P.S. Have you read my private message that I sent to you awhile ago?

Love it! I just can't imagine HOW MUCH better it would have been if you had the 5D3.

However, it is just as good as it gets! I love the compositions and your sliders were well shot!

Well job done brother!

Now I want to go to Africa with my 5D3!!!

Magicians -

Here I came up with a thought of taking Dual ISO RAW Video recordings of outdoors by the City Hall/Fire House in Los Angeles, CA while waiting for my step-daughter to finish her Girl Scout meeting. This was taken at night for test purposes!

I've also decided to push the boundaries to the next level by doing three sets of different Dual's (100/1600, 400/3200 & 800/6400) just for the heck of it and to see how it compares in its performance.

The entire testing was done with ETTR, 1/48th, 14mm T3.1

Workflow as usual - Raw2dng (0.13)/ cr2hdr (1.6)/ ACR (8.2)/ Quicktime (7)

Enjoy and THANKS to A1ex & ML crew!

Small update to cr2hdr:
- fixed cold pixel handling
- experimental DNG compression (you need to install Adobe DNG Converter; should be autodetected)

DNG compression (requires Adobe DNG Converter):
--compress      : Lossless DNG compression
--compress-lossy: Lossy DNG compression (be careful, may destroy shadow detail)

Download it from first post. It works pretty good for me (currently running it on a few thousands of pictures), but I'm still waiting for a detailed bug report for post #1602 (I could not reproduce it).

Also, auto ETTR should do slightly better choices when linked to dual ISO:
- dual ISO is only enabled by ETTR if the DR improvement is at least 1 stop (so it should no longer choose 100/200, for example)
- if the calculations result in something like 200/800, it will switch to 100/800 (better highlight protection at very small cost)

Hello A1ex -- hope you enjoyed your Thanksgiving weekend. I wanted to follow up regarding your recent update to your cr2hdr and I clicked on the Mac version link that is on the first post (according to your statement) and apparently the link is dead as of now.

Perhaps is the reason because of the recent bug regarding the black area losing resolution by half.

Should I stick with beta version .13?

Thanks!

Very well shot and excellent editing as well!

This is one of the reasons why the 50D are still at high demand from practically anywhere!

Well done.

Alright Magicians -

After numerous of tests with two different RAW file converters (raw2dng & RAWMagic) just to see which would suit best. By far I think the raw2dng is more stable BUT then for some reason SOMETIMES RAWMagic does get the job done but then half of the time I would get error after exporting from Tiff's into Sequence Files (Quicktime 7) so i'm just gonna stick with raw2dng for now.

However, I did use the DNG's to convert in cr2hdr (both 1.6 and 1.9) and oddly enough they both seem identical but perhaps I think the files from 1.6 produced less noise than those from 1.9. When I would expect it to be the other way around?

I am also starting to think the RAW file that was recorded with (Nov. 4th nightly build) at the time so it could be the reason why the single flick came on towards the end of the clip. I have tried to narrow down the DNG's in ACR to find out which file was being changed but darn it just shows that it is all the same settings from a certain XMP file that I had used previously in order for it all to be in the same settings.

and yes in case you guys were wondering...I am done with this RAW file from here on out. I will post some newer ones with the latest Nightly Build and see if that would make a difference.

Hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving and stay warm!

Thanks again Danne for the link to a previous version of cr2hdr (1.6) and ironically after following your youtube video from earlier -- I have tried that one trick you did during the syncing process on ACR (even though I'm not sure if local adjustments is necessary afterall) but it managed to make it look better and the flickering is literally gone. ( Yes -- all of this were done with DNG's that were processed from cr2hdr (1.9) )

Just literally....apparently there was just one flick that came on in the middle of this same clip that I used from the first post and perhaps that's why I'll have to redo this process once again with cr2hdr (1.6) tonight and will post them when I can.

At least I made a step closer to perfection!

#3340
Thanks Danne for your suggestion and for posting the YouTube video.

I'm just not quite sure what you meant by a.d converter 1.6?

This morning I woke up and realized my Mac had froze over night from all the converter going on at the same time...

Looks like I'll have to restart some of them...

Be back on later!

#3341
Indeed I do notice some little artifacts (i.e. last pixel line on the bottom (sometimes even on the top borderline) changes colors usually in reddish color every 6-7 frames or so if I remember correctly as well as the vertical banding) I felt that it was probably has to do with the transcoding process from the latest cr2hdr (1.9) after converting the Dual ISO RAW Video into DNG's with raw2dng (0.13)... or it could be from how I edited them in ACR???

I had to go to a doctor's appointment this afternoon and frankly I arrived early and had the 5D3 with me in this parking garage that was exposed to the alley outside with good amount of DR all over the place.

Only had about 20 minutes to get some more Dual ISO RAW Video test footage before going in...

Here are some stills of Dual-ISO to take a peak at ISO 100/800 (both graded in ACR after cr2hdr)

Will process the Dual-ISO RAW Video with raw2dng/cr2hdr tonight and then edit them in ACR to get them online as soon as I can.

Thanks guys!

Hello once again -

Here's a few more of my 2nd tests with Dual ISO Raw Video recording in 1080p 24 fps with ISO100/800...

Down below is a purposely test with ISO 100/1600 (I KNOW IT IS NOT RECOMMENDED BUT WANTED TO SEE WHAT IT WOULD LOOK LIKE although it turned out to be OE)

To be continued...

A1ex - Thanks for the suggestions. That makes perfect sense about how the flickering may have been caused by different black and white levels on each frame because we don't get the flickering with the original files.

However, I will check the values with exiftool.

If you still are curious about the RAW file...

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/24998329/Dual%20ISO/M19-1151.RAW

That's the smallest size file (which is the original RAW from this video above) at 1.3 GB.

FYI -
Processing RAW files individually with multiple raw2dng's

This one down below is my way of testing 2 different methods for each RAW files (One would be the original DNG's being processed while the other is actually CR2 files after changing the file names in NameChanger) IMO, they both seem to be doing the same process but I don't think changing the names from DNG to CR2 is no longer necessary with the latest cr2hdr (1.9) on Mac. (Correct me if I'm mistaken pls!)

Of course, all of the DNG's were processed with the latest raw2dng prior to this.

This is going to be a LONG night... =)

To be continued...

Thanks again!

Nothing to do with your build.  Read the post processing raw video guides..

Thanks RenatoPhoto for the links. I've read them previously but as always I scroll down to review the latest comments from our members.

I actually did use the older version of cr2hdr (1.6) but then I found the latest update for Mac so I used that as well and it still shows the flaws.

I still believe it may be an error on my part but I have done many Dual iso photos and really understand the work flow for post processing really well.

Really frustrating but I just shot some more dual iso raw video tests this afternoon and will post them as soon as I can...

Thanks guys!!!

I am currently using the Nightly build from 2013-11-18...

Gonna check out the change log on the latest ones and see if there's any bug fixes yet.

Do you get these as well after post processing Dual ISO Raw Video files?

Magicians -

Once again here's one of my first tests with Dual ISO Raw Video recording with ISO 100/800.

I have tried two different known methods of workflows for Mac (from this forum) in attempt to try and avoid the flickering as well as the horizontal lines...FRUSTRATING!

Absolutely.

I'll try to keep it as simple as possible...do you have the lastest nightly built for ML? (I am currently using Nov.11 build)

If so, then you would want to make sure that the Modules are on for both Raw Video recording as well as Dual ISO. You can find them under the Modules section in your ML menu.

Then scroll to the Expo section (2nd to the left screen on ML menu) Be sure to turn on Dual ISO and your preferred settings. (KEEP IN MIND THAT IT ALSO REQUIRES FOR YOU TO HAVE RAW VIDEO RECORDING ON otherwise!)

You may also want to look into the ETTR which I think its an amazing feature that definitely helps in certain shooting situations whereas heavy DR is involved. Which also has to be turned on in the Module section as well.

Would be glad to answer any more questions if needed to.

*cheers*

SJ

Did the info from up above not answer to your question or did you meant how to do it in POST?

If so -- Dual ISO Raw Videos should be converted to DNG's with Raw2dng and then Take the DNG's (which will still have the Dual ISO lines) into cr2hdr (just drag the folder and it'll do the work for you which will take awhile!) and then FINALLY you can colorgrade them and EXPORT as TIFF's in order for you to Open as Sequence Files in Quicktime 7 (not 10)...

Lastly would be to export from QT7 in whatever format you desire depending on your editing system's requirements.

Hope this helps!

literally just watched this video for the 7th time...you got me there!

again, well job done s---70!

Can someone pls upload the link to the latest working build for 5D3 as the last one i can see is August 21st

I'm assuming you're trying to bleed on the edge with most of us by using nightly builds, if so...

http://builds.magiclantern.fm/#/ and be sure you choose the platform to 5D3.

Otherwise - you can just get the latest Alpha version from here https://bitbucket.org/hudson/magic-lantern/downloads/magiclantern-5D3.113.Alpha3.zip

Enjoy!
