Feature Requests / Re: Force fixed aperture for non chipped lenses
« on: March 05, 2014, 04:13:31 PM »
I forgot about this until a few nights ago when I tried the exposure override feature on my 60D with the new nightly. It worked perfectly!

Now, the problem I have is with a 6D. That feature is not working on that camera.

Is anyone else experiencing this?

Quick question guys. To upgrade from stable v2.3, do I just delete the old files and copy the new ones to the card?

Thanks

IMO DPP is not very good.
Yeah, I don't like it either. I actually never use that software, I used it in this case to convert to jpeg from raw since I never shoot jpeg and I wanted to have a kind of SOOC picture.

Nope, this is totally normal, all cameras sensors have dead and hot pixels, it's a fundamental defect of the CMOS manufacturing process (though higher end sensors usually have fewer, my 60D has fewer than my 1100D). They will always be in the same place. Longer exposures tend to make them more likely to get stuck.

Try opening the raw photo directly in photoshop with ACR, it should take care of them. Also, if you shoot JPEG you will notice the camera itself will remove them.

If you don't believe me, simply take some photos with the same exposure settings without ML on a card and see if they're not still there.

I know it's normal on these cameras, but I was surprised to see so many of them because the camera is brand new, it was my first time out with it. I purchased it about 2 weeks ago. Also, the one that looks like an X is really weird, never saw anything like that.

My 60D has dead pixels too, but not that much.

General Help Q&A / Can Magic Lantern cause dead/hot/stuck pixels?

Recently I went out on a shoot and when I came back and checked my pictures I noticed there are a lot of dead pixels on my images. Since the camera is brand new, I thought maybe Magic Lantern is causing this? I will take a few more samples tonight with and without ML just to check this, but thought I should post the samples in the meantime to get some feedback from you guys.

EXIF is Canon 6D, 25s, ISO 1600.

ML version magiclantern-v2.3.NEXT.2013Nov16.6D113

I converted a raw file using DPP then cropped it in PS. All crops are from the same picture. And yes, I noticed this stuff on a lot of pictures on the same place.

These are 100% crops:

This one is a 300% crop, notice the X pixel:

Pretty weird.

Is ML causing this?

Thanks in advance!

Enable exposure override.

I tried that on my 60D with ML 2.3 but there wasn't any difference. Will try again on the 6D with the latest nightly build.

Feature Requests / Force fixed aperture for non chipped lenses
« on: November 10, 2013, 05:00:38 AM »
Hi developers,

I recently bought a Samyang 14mm and it's a full manual lens. I'm okay with that, but there's one thing that bothers me and it's related to the camera not being able to read the aperture of the lens because it doesn't have a chip.

Being used to chipped lenses, I never experienced this, but now I noticed that both my 60D and 6D don't show the correct brightness when on live view mode. Even worst, the exposure readings I get are way off. Often I get underexposed images so it's a must to check the histogram (something I always do anyway). But the downside of all this is that it's almost impossible to use a semi-manual setting, like say aperture priority.

Now, what I'm thinking is: is it possible to cheat the aperture and force a fixed one in the camera? I think if the camera reads for example f/2.8 it will show a correct exposure reading. But maybe I'm wrong.

What do you think, is this possible?

Thank you finally some feedback. I'll check it out and try to end this upgrade/downgrade stuff.

No problem. Let me know if you need me to test anything else.

Thank you for your hard work!

You won't be able to sign it.

Since my M installer worked, 6D one might too:

I just tried to install it with this file but it's not working. When I go to the firmware update process, I click OK, the red LED blinks, the LCD goes black and the camera turns off.

General Help Q&A / Re: Wrong focal length on Live View with ML v2.3
« on: August 29, 2013, 12:26:07 AM »
Thanks for the clarification.

I just did a few more tests and I also cleaned the contacts, but the problem is there.

Now, I noticed there's something wrong with the zoom ring, I think that's where the issue is. It's a bit loose and that changes the focal length on the screen from 17 to 42 or something strange like that.

I guess I'm going to have to send it to repair shop.

Thanks for your help!

Thanks for the information, Walter.

I see on that link you posted that the T3i is not on the list of unsupported cameras and I just tested the lens with that body and the problem is still there. So I think it's an issue with the lens' contacts.

General Help Q&A / Wrong focal length on Live View with ML v2.3
« on: August 28, 2013, 09:15:29 AM »
Hi guys,

I noticed this weird issue a few days ago when I was post processing some of my shots. When I go to live view I see all the information ML shows, and at the bottom left I can see the focal length is wrong.

Let's say I'm shooting at 17mm, ML shows 32mm. If I go to 50mm, ML shows 42mm. I tried moving the lens a bit and sometimes it changes to the actual focal length, but then it goes to the wrong value again. I also tested with a Canon 18-55 and that's working fine, so the problem seems to be the Tamron 17-50 lens. I don't have other lens to test.

I'm not sure, but I think this wasn't happening a few months ago (I'm not sure when or why it started). I was thinking maybe it's a problem with the contacts on the lens? What do you recommend to clean them?

I also deleted the config file but the problem is still there. I'm using a 60D.

Thanks!

I've been using ML on a 60D for quite a while. I recently acquired a T3i and now I want to install ML on it as well.

I was wondering, is it okay to use the same card on both cameras?

Thanks

muy muy bueno. ¿cómo lograste los movimientos de la cámara tan bien hechos?
Gracias. Usé un dolly, el Stage Zero de Dynamic Perception.

I think your timelapse is just amazing.
I am Argentinean too, and I am going to shoot in Jujuy this march. It is my second short film about the traspassing of knowledge between a grand child and her grandmother. Could you please let me know how exactly you did this? The short film is called: Catalina y el Sol. So I thought about using timelapses of the sun and the sky by night.
Muchas gracias y un feliz año nuevo.

Hi everybody.

I want to share with you my new film featuring some places from around my hometown in Argentina.

Some shots were shot with Magic Lantern, others with cheap intervalometers and others with Dynamic Perception's Stage Zero.

Any feedback is appreciated. Hope you enjoy it.

Thanks for watching!

It's actually 32"+/- .2/4

Now, to answer my question about why this is happening: http://photo.stackexchange.com/questions/21671/why-does-a-15-second-exposure-on-my-camera-actually-last-16-seconds

General Help Q&A / 30 seconds are not really 30 seconds?
« on: September 20, 2012, 08:35:21 PM »
Last night when setting up a timelapse I noticed that 30 seconds are not really 30 seconds (at least not according to ML).

I set my camera in manual for a 30 second exposure, but when I went into live view I saw it says 32" instead of 30".

Why is that?

I smell some incompatibility with Av mode. Keep the RAW footage for this, it's a good test subject.
Don't worry, I never delete my RAWs.

I tried everything to save that footage. Finally I got rid of the flicker using LRTimelapse + Donald Graft's deflicker plugin for Virtual Dub, the second one did the magic.
