I just read this WHOLE THREAD front to back (as it has been a while since I have kept up with where we are) and I'm more lost than I was before I read it! All this talk about all these features I don't understand, boot flag this and dumping that...I'm LOST! The features I DO need and DO understand are audio meters in video mode (why Canon didn't include this is beyond me), zebras, and longer recording times because quite frankly, 29:59 doesn't cut it for a wedding videographer like myself. Does anybody have any enlightening advice or do I need to read that "answers" thread I read about somewhere? I have been longing for ML since I bought my camera in August.
Another good place to look is YouTube.  There are quite a few videos that show how to install and others that go over different features with examples.  I've found them very helpful.

I don't know, I've known people who do wedding videos with DSLR's and they make some amazing stuff. There are definite advantages to a camcorder, but definite advantages to a DSLR as well.

I've been to two weddings in the last year or so as a guest and the Pro photographers used DSLR's for videos.  It was after the last one I decided it was time to upgrade to one.  When the T4i/650D was released I knew that was the one for me.

Interesting - the weak link I find in the 650D/t4i user interface is having to hold the aperture button down on the back of the camera to change aperture in Manual mode, so i kinda agree with your thinking here. It's a rub-your-head-pat-your-stomach move to adjust aperture.

I thought only I felt that way.  If you are holding down the shutter 1/2 way it's a 3 fingered pain.

Thanks. I go with 600D...  ::)

I wouldn't give up that fast.  I bet in the next few of months they have a stable version out.

There's work too, but you know?

Same here, I think you took it wrong.   I figured you where busy because you haven't really been on and didn't expect you to answer.  I thought others were working on it besides you and thought they would update us.  Just stuff like found this, tweaked that, turned on this function and testing that.  Definitely not how far along are you or when is pre-alfa 2 coming out.

Any updates ?

Found any issues with the build so far from the previous tests ?

Keep the hard work up :)

It has been awful quiet.  No real news or updates either way.   I'm hoping that's a good sign.

where is this verson please ?

They don't want any one else testing right now.  They feel it is to unstable to keep testing.  Just sit patiently,  when they feel a new pre-alpha is ready for more testers they will pass it on.  If you keep bugging them it won't ever get released.  Yes a few of us have it already and most of us have stopped testing like we were told.

I am still using it and I detected a bug in the normal Canon Firmware when ML is loaded.
Sometimes in Picture Review mode I can't use touch or go to other pictures.
When exiting and reentering via. the play button everything seems to be fine again.

Interesting, I had that happen but I pulled the batt. out.  That was yesterday so now I'm only loading ML when I want to try one or two feature and then back out.  Up until then I only had questions about how to use certain settings I couldn't get to work.
Thanks for posting that.  I was going to try it a couple more times before I posted it.  I wanted to make sure it wasn't me first.  Now I feel comfortable knowing it wasn't me.

I know nanomad said we should all remove and stop testing the Pre-alpha but I'm curious who other than the Developers are still using/testing it? Other than mine and one other I haven't seen what I consider a lot of major bugs.  I know I'm not a developer so I can only go by what I read posted here. The little I have tested so far has been trouble free. I hope this is a good sign so we can continue our testing soon.
I'm not rushing them because I know the pre-alpha and alpha are where the majority of issues are corrected so that the beta version can be more stable and hopefully just need some tweaking.

Thanks Dev. team for all you do on your free time for us.

You have to do at least 4, 5, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18.
In my opinion, there's no need to flash the firmware again.

Thanks I'll give it a try later.

We have a green light.
The install procedure is not really straightforward but it should be doable by someone with a ML knowledge

WARNING: This will make both your card and your camera bootable. It should also be the only "permanent" change to your camera this build does, but I cannot guarantee you that

  • Reset camera settings
  • Reset custom functions
  • Turn dial to M mode
  • Place a spare SD in the camera
  • Do a in-camera low level format
  • Download the firmware dumper: 01_650d_dumper.rar
  • Extract it on the card (the structure is similar to traditional ML installs, just with less folders and no autoexec)
  • Do a firmware update
  • The camera will do some stuff, dump the firmware and then stop with a solid red light
  • Turn off the camera
  • Remove card and battery
  • Place card in the reader
  • Run EOSCard, select your card, make it bootable (check all the flags, don't touch the ML or CHDK buttons)
  • Hit save a couple of times
  • Download the pre-alpha1 build 02_650D.101.PreAlpha1.READTHEFORUM.zip
  • Extract it on your card, replace files when asked (if it doesn't, you're probably doing it wrong :P)
  • Put card in camera
  • You know what you do ;)

Do I have to follow every step here to put ML on a second card.  ML is running ok on my 4gb card but I really want it on my 32gb card.

Thanks after I thought about it the number of shots was right.

Is the shutter count a true number right from it's first shot taken?

baga, In live view, If you turn on "Exp. override" to ON (bottom of Expo Menu) the ISO is adjustable in ML menu. But if you take a picture you will see that your ISO was not used. Canon's ISO was used. Think this will work when props is enabled.

nanomad, Now i can reproduce camera freeze! Exp. Override: ON. ML Auto ISO: ON. Turn off camera. Turn on camera (shoot mode). LV on. Press trash (ML munu). The menu doesn't appear, but the picture and overlay is live. No other buttons respond ither. When I turn off camera the LV remains on ...Removed battery...

I have reproduced it 5 times, but it's mostly OK. With these settings the CPU is at 99-100%...

That did it thanks!

I thought it worked. Here is how i tested it:
In movie mode/AV, set the Canon ISO to 100. In ML menu set Exp override to ON. Turn the ML ISO to 100. Turn the ML auto ISO on: Now the iso rises in steps up to 1600, but the AV Shutter and Aperture sustains unchanged. The LV is now brighter, and if you shoot a movie, that will also be that bright too.
BUT the ISO only rises. Not even when i point the lens directly to bright light it goes down...
Now i see a short message on the screen when i turn on the camera with theese settings: "!!! Auto Exposure !!!  Set Movie Exposure -> Manual in Canon Menu". So I suppose Canon exposure is working in the background... :-[

Glad to see more testers here, blade! :D Good to see that you double check my testings - maybe other combination of settings can bring other results. I'm also a bit confused of what props does...  :o

I was just going to ask about the ISO.  I couldn't get it to change in ML menu, works only on the camera's menu.

Thanks for the feedback everyone, and sorry for the troubles caused to our two fellow testers  :-[
I'll see if I can get a fix out ASAP (not today, probably during the weekend)

Thanks, I'm lost without my camera ready to shoot on the coffee table. lol

If there is anything you'ld like me to try?  I'll be leaving to pick up my grandson.  I always take my laptop I'll be taking my camera also.
So if you do could you PM instructions like format, macboot, files etc.
