How make files cropmark.bmp?
I made it, but it have 1,4 Mb, instead of 7 Kb of origin ML. Finally I finish to create a littke bmp 7kB with XnView (Great software photo free), but once selected in the menu ML,it does not display known the LCD screen, as if it was transparent.
With what free software we can save as a little kB bmp, and which is compatible with the ML menu?
Hi,
This will help.

Feature Requests / Re: [Invalid] Flash WB/Tint
September 11, 2013, 04:07:32 PM
I forgot to add,
Since your on camera flash is a small localized source, when you change the white balance for your exposure from that flash (Say for example you make your WB 3200 and plus 8 magenta) it's only in post, when you correct back to daylight, that you will see the effects on the rest of the scene. To be more clear.
If you are shooting a subject horizontal wide angle, and that subject is a person. You are framing the individual half chest to top of head. they are standing in front of the ocean, it is about 6 pm. Your flash is set to overpower daylight by 2 1/2 stops. Your WB is 3200. You shoot the photo. In the computer you open your image, the image is too blue on your subject. when you correct the white balance to be pleasing on the skin tone (back to 5000) what you will discover is that your background is now much more orange than it was. This is a result of your main light being "incorrectly" White balanced for the exposure. And when you correct it voila. Your on camera flash is a small source. And it's light falloff is governed by the inverse square law, which states that for every doubling of distance your flash looses half it's power. ex. If you measure f/8.0 2 feet from your flash, it will be 4.0 @ 4 feet and 2.8 @ 8 feet. Therefore, rarely does your flash have the power to illumiate your subject and the background fully. And in that is your control over it's WB in relation to your surroundings.

Feature Requests / Re: [Invalid] Flash WB/Tint

The short answer is yes, it just depends on the balance of your flash vs. the ambient. If you overpower ambient by at least 2 stops you will begin to see the flash WB more and more. Try setting your camera to tungsten and use your flash all things will be blue. Try dialing in green or mangenta and see the difference. Also, when you shoot moving subjects with flash @ shutter speeds below 1/15th, you'll really begin to see the double exposure effect. Though it is more of a freeze motion with other blurred stuff around it. I recomend shooting @ dusk and messing with your white ballance and exposure to see what you can do. The slower shutter speeds are more interesting. I say dusk, due to the variance of color temperature you'll encounter and then you can really experiment. Remember, everything is relative, Content to Composition to color temperature(the cameras setting and the WB "Setting" of the world around you to Exposure to contrast ratio.
(Ever done a bulb exposure using nothing but flash as the shutter?) those are cool too. (And you can still them in this digital age)
So, yes it is a double exposure of sorts, but only when the flash begins to act as the shutter (when it's dark outside). Because the shutter opens beginning the exposure but the flash acts as the shutter because it creates the light needed to actually illuminate the scene sufficiently enough to reflect photons back to the recording medium, causing exposure (in the old days of the halides) these days of the pixels. The shutter being open allows the photons in, but the flash is the mechanism which creates the duration of the exposure, much like a shutter would ordinarily do.
One last thing, get an off camera e-ttl flash extension cord ( cause who says the flash always has to illuminate from 8 inches above the axis) or (who says the flash has to illuminate what's in front of the camera at all) why not the tree behind your subject or maybe a side light. Flash is fun and powerful especially when you can move the two (camera and flash) independently.

Hardware and Accessories / Re: 550d VAF-txi filter problem

Hey John!  Actually, that's part of the installation process.  The mirror has to be raised for the filter to fit properly:

http://www.mosaicengineering.com/products/vaf/txi/install.html

(Camera is placed in Live View mode, raising mirror, VAF-TXi is installed, which holds the mirror up.)

Copy that. That's what it is for the 7D too.

I don't have one, but it seems you should raise the mirror, then install the filter?

Thanks John.  I sent the dev a private note.  Don't see why a C++ person (scripting is all this old dog is useful for anymore) couldn't make a quick Windows command utility to parse MRV into RAW.  Anyway. offered to help.  In the meantime, I put my 50D back to one of Andy's stable builds.

Hey man, mlvdng.exe goes all the way to .dng no need for raw inter. Also, i'm pretty sure g3gg0 put up a mlv_dump.exe I may be wrong. but i would check developer g3gg0 threads.

I did something to my 50D, now I have these .MLV files and am lost in a sea of forum posts.  I'm on Windows.  Can someone point me to where I can get a program/script, whatever, to get me to RAW so I can RAWanizer it :)  I've read just a thing exists, but have also read many problems.  So don't want to download something old and gnarly.  Thanks!  I just hope I can find my way back to this forum thread! :)

check out mlv2dng by gnarr.
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/3181048/mlv2dng.zip
the program is command line executable on windows something like.
c:> folder/where/mlv2dng.exe c:> file/where/Mxx-xxx1.MLV > c:> folder/where/you/want/xxxxxx.DNG
I make my folder before and drag and drop it onto the DOS prompt window. works good.
mlv_dump, is available from somewhere around here it's linux, but it's got more options (as far as I can tell)
search mlv_dump. or compile it yourself from g3gg0's repository @ bitbucket.org.

I just ran mlv_dump successfully for linux. works great. I did a verbose dump for 7D. i put the code below.

studio@studio-linux:~/Desktop/MLV_Dump0$ ./mlv_dump -o M01-001.RAW -v -r -l0 /home/studio/Desktop/MLV_Dump0/M02-2157.MLV

Hi,
I compiled all the latest stuff for the 7D from g3gg0/magic-lantern. I'm not able to get any results from mlv_dump other than a read out of the file structure of the .mlv.
I wonder what it is I'm doing wrong? maybe my usage is incorrect?
studio@studio-linux:~/Desktop/MLV_Dump0$ ./mlv_dump /home/studio/Desktop/MLV_Dump0/M02-2157.MLV

So, I searched and found.

In linux type

./mlv_dump -h and get the usage RULES

I'll keep my post so people can see and learn from my own mistakes

When I try mlv2dng.exe I have no problems getting the .dng output.

BTW. I am having no issues recording continuous frames at 16x9 @ 1782. on a 1066x toshiba 16gb.
no pink frames. no small hacks enabled. works great. I compiled these modules for the 7D. file_man, ime_std, ime_rot, xml_cfg, raw_rec, pic_view. Raw_rec works well. Am checking the buffering strategies for speed gains. right now with my card I get upwards of 67 MB/s write speed whilst recording. the card benchmarks avg. 90MB/s.

Any help. I'm not so skilled at all this. I've learned how to by reading all the stuff the Developers of ML have shared but, I'm no programmer, an advanced user at best. Please, any help. If you point me in the direction I will figure out the rest.

I'm guessing my problem is.  #error This file requires compiler and library support for the upcoming ISO C++ standard, C++0x. This support is currently experimental, and must be enabled with the -std=c++0x or -std=gnu++0x compiler options.
Thank you.

Hi, I've tried to use the mlv2dng on osx and linux. ( both the gui and comand line versions) and as yet haven't any success.
On osx 10.7.5 I get the error with the 4 in it. and Linux is permission denied. I ran as sudo and sudo -s. to no avail. I also installed it to usr/local/bin and /opt/mlv2dng/bin and changed updated path each time also didn't work. I also used the regular suggested usage, but that didn't work. Always permission denied.

I'll try the windows version later to see if I hve success. I am on OSX 10.7.5 so that might be the problem there. other wise it's xUbuntu 12.04 LTS.

Update:
I now get this result on linux:
Operating mode:
- Input MLV file: '/home/studio/Desktop/MLVDump/MLV_Start/M01-2046.MLV'
- Verify file structure
Reached end of file after 3324 blocks
Opened file '/home/studio/Desktop/MLVDump/MLV_Start/M01-2046.M00'
Reached end of file after 218 blocks

But no files.

Update:
tried mlv2dng on windows and it works like a charm. only thing is no subfolder is created by the process dumping all the file into the folder containing the .exe /or the .mlv. I don't know which cause they're both in the same folder, now along with all the created DNG's.

Also,  I cloned your source from bitbucket, but don't see a makefile. I tried build. Didn't work. how do you compile this I wonder. Thank you for any help.
I tried arm-none-eabi-g++ /the/folder/where/main.cpp but it didn't work so good. I'm a unix user so i don't do windows well. Is this best compiled on windows ?

have you tried a card with canon firmware? maybe you may need to reinstall canon firmware?

I don't know. But im super mega glad to offer him one 7D. If we get all together i think we can get the money easily to buy one in second hand. Like we did with the 50D.

In Portugal one 7D in second hand cost 700€ + shipment + customs it's more money like this but i think that 1% is from USA. If some one can find one good and cheap 7D in USA we don't have to pay large money in shipment and in customs... and i think in USA the cameras are more affordable. Also he already have good cf cards from the 50D.

-we have a monster that wants to wake up-
I'm in, whataya need? money? tell me where to send it.

Hi UnKnown,
so i just tried 1.1.3 for mac and it works like a charm. seems a little faster then 1.1.1 also the DNG with linear uncompressed looks fantastic. also 6.5 MB file, very nice. I have no bugs for you as of yet. But I can mention that the XML seems to be stripped or not carried on because Dimensions aren't transposed to the created files. ( I also like the tiff out option for speedy outputs to Dav Resolove) thanks a lot. Have you considered some sort of file browser? something like RAWmagic? I am asking only to see if you've considered it. I've got NO programming chops so I don't know if it's easy or hard. But, i would still suggest some form of thumbnail preview. (it would make your app the cream of the crop Honestly, because your output seems to mine eyes cleaner than RAWmagic) does your app span files ****.RAW, *****.R00 or do we have to cat them in terminal first? I don't have any spanned files on my drives to try)
Keep up the fantastic development.

You can't build a fir anyway since the signing tools are the only "undisclosed" thing of ML.

Aahha, so that's the Builder_Dir. ?
Gotcha. Thank you. i've been trying to figure this thing out. All I want to compile is an autoboot 7D alpha 2 with the video hacks active. The Raw_rec is great and all but from a production stand point the variable GOP and Bitrate is some of the trully most usefull to me. I know and see the modulariztion of ML and understand the beauty, I just don't have the chops to write my own Video_Hack.mo yet. Thank you for your input nanomad. (nice new website design, BTW)

I had that error as well a few months back. I installed via MacPorts to get that command ('port install truncate'). I also had to edit makefile.src to remove the following option flag, I think it was 'truncate -r ....' which I replaced with 'truncate'

I've had a few other stumblings compiling on a mac. Let me know if you run into anything else.

Yup, yup, yup, I see there is some new stuff in the makefile.src ( I forgot about that one.) There's a few more instances of truncate there then there used to be. I just updated my ports and sudo port install truncate also helped ( as I have truncate now). Also, sudo port install montage for make docq problem and all should be good.
thank you.
I was also wondering about build_fir7.py which should be in the a dumper directory, I just am not understanding which Dump, is it an IDA dump of canon firmware or is it a dump via firmware from my 7D?

i typed man truncate in OSX terminal and get the proper man for BSD system calls ftruncate and truncate but I am still getting the compiler error, I just don't know where to start looking for the source of the error due to lack of some kind of other indicator.

Hello,
I am getting this error with the latest Unified whilst I try to compile.

Johns-Mac-Pro:magic-lantern johnkesl$ make 7D
make -C  /Users/johnkesl/Development_ML/magic-lantern/platform/7D.203
[ VERSION  ]   ../../platform/7D.203/version.bin
make[1]: truncate: Command not found
make[1]: *** [../../platform/7D.203/version.bin] Error 127
make: *** [7D] Error 2

I have tried compiling ML from Unified today, with a freshly cloned rep. And received the error.
I tried compiling ML from an older Unified clone 08/11/13 and didn't receive the error. I have checked my make file and it looks in order was wondering where the truncate command comes from and also I see the version.bin which I've not seen before.
What am I missing?
please help.
Thank you

I got EXACTLY that screen when upgrading my 5dm3 to the latest Canon firmware, it was unrecoverable and I ended up sending the body back to Canon where the replaced the logic board at the cost of over $200.  I'm not saying that this is your problem, just that you maybe up a creek without a paddle.

that happened last night but i had a new dumper firmware in there try and download the firmware again.
jk

make sure it's 7D000203.fir

https://bitbucket.org/a_d_/magic-lantern/overview

should be this one.
and it's the full build of unified so you should be good to go.

hg clone https://bitbucket.org/pravdomil/magic-lantern-hack

open terminal. type cd /your/folder preffered dl folder/here hit enter
type the above link and it'll clone the repository to the folder you specified with cd

Um, could you please elaborate on that :-p for a simply magic lantern enthusiast - what are "name strings"?

Here's what I did. I hg clone -r unified https://bitbucket.org/hudson/magic-lantern. Remember to cd to where you want the download before you do it.
then once it's done I copy the folder in place. Example: /your folder/magic-lantern is the original clone from bitbucket.
your folder/magic-lantern2 is my working dir. as soon as I copy the folder I open terminal and cd /your folder/magic-lantern2.
if you have your source code on your computer, copy it to this folder in the appropriate places (e.g.. if your working on modules don't overwrite the whole folder just add your part. type in terminal make clean and then make, then, cd /your folder/magic-lantern/modules/your module, then type make (name of your module) minus the parentheses. if you need to see how to set up the makefile look at the other modules. I recommend sourcetree it's free from bitbucket.
If you want to combine unified and some other fork or branch. do as before and make a copy of your clone. then go to bitbucket.org/hudson/magiclantern/downloads. if you click on tags or branches you can download the source for a tag or branch in zip format. Once you do. Unzip and copy the stuff you downloaded to your copy ( this is where making a copy of the clone and using something like source tree is wonderful). once you copy the stuff you want to work on into your copied unified, make clean && make, and go nuts. If you screw something up, you can either make yourself another one by copying your original clone, or use sourcetree to revert your changes. ( the beauty of copying the clone, is a) you never mess with the "pristine" code, and it's like undo for me ( cause i'm a dumb noob at this, and sometimes i just gotta start over) you can use this method for versioning, once you've got a change that works, make clean and copy the folder, so your next working dir is /your folder/magic-lantern3.
hope it helps.
and name strings looks to be an author descriptor for the module, so when you open it on your camera your name and such is there instead of no one or, one of the dev's, I think.  :D

ALSO. In your makefile.user make sure, to turn on TCC and modules. it's at the bottom in the config section, you must turn both on TCC helps make modules and modules make you yourcamer.sym file, and that's the one that's giving you all the trouble i'd say, is, you need to make (at least as far as I understand it) your autoexec.bin and your yourcamera.sym file at the same time, the modules not so much.
