Feature Requests / Re: [DONE] Movie Restart on 5D3?

Many thanks for fixing this feature. I long ago sold our 5D3s & have given up filming weddings but it's nice to know that work still continues on fixing ML.

Feature Requests / Re: Movie Restart on 5D3?

I got no reply to my questions but almost instantly I did get a PM warning me about double posting. I tried to reply to the PM but cannot. So will reply here instead.

I realised after posting on the General Development sub-forum that Feature Requests was a more appropriate sub-forum so then wrote a new & expanded post on this sub-forum. If I could have deleted my original post I would have done but there is no option that I can find that allows a user to delete a thread once started although presumably the moderators can do this. So please instead of issuing warnings why not just engage in dialogue? Perhaps the moderator who sent me the PM could delete the thread from General Development & leave this thread in Feature Requests? If I could have done it myself I would have & it's not really my fault if the forum software does not allow basic functionality to the user like deleting a thread that they realise is in the wrong sub-forum. I also didn't just cut & paste the same post in both as in the Feature Requests sub-forum I expanded on my original post & have spent some time describing why this feature is important to me & others.

Cheers
Nigel

Feature Requests / Re: Movie Restart on 5D3?

I have posted a couple of times in the General Development forum regarding this issue without getting an answer so perhaps it will get more visibility if I post here. Perhaps someone could even be incentivised to fix it.

Move Restart does not work on any of the 5D3 builds that I have tried including most recent Nightly Builds even though there is a Magic Lantern menu item to enable this function.

According to this webpage which is a Feature Comparison Matrix http://nanomad.magiclantern.fm/jenkins/features.html "This table was generated automatically from ML source code. It only shows what things are enabled - they may work or they may not." Movie Restart on the 5D3 is not enabled. I had wondered whether this was because the 5D3 recording limit is fixed by Canon firmware at 29'59" rather than the single 4GB file of the 5D2 & other older DSLRs on which Movie Restart does work. However according to that matrix Movie Restart is enabled for the 6D, 700D & EOS-M all of which have a 29'59" limit so span multiple 4GB files for one video clip.

Perhaps someone using Magic Lantern on the 6D, 700D & EOS-M could confirm whether Movie Restart indeed does work on these cameras.

I recall reading somewhere that Movie Restart was deliberately omitted from the Alpha 3 version of ML released last December but am not sure if this is still the case. Can anybody who is familiar with the source code answer the simple question of whether Movie Restart could be enabled on the 5D3?

This would be such a useful feature for those of us who use the 5D3 for weddings & other events. I typically have one or two locked off B/C cameras while I shoot the main action on a 5D3. Ideally I would use another 5D3 or two as the wide angle locked off 'safety' shot so that I get a consistent look between all the cameras. The regular 29'59" limit is OK most of the time but too often a ceremony of the speeches will just run over & I would be losing the last few minutes & because of that I cannot use the 5D3. I have been using a proper camcorder (Canon XF105) but this isn't so great in low light. I have just switched to a Panasonic G6 which doesn't have a recording limit but is MFT so it looks a bit more 'videoy' & the colours don't quite match up like they would if I were just using another 5D3. If Movie Restart really does work on the 6D that might be an option but while the 6D has the low light capability of the 5D3 it also has the moire & aliasing of the 5D2. So I really really want this to work on the 5D3.

What needs to be done to get this working?

I used it once back in March.  It worked then.
Was this definitely on the 5D3? Movie Restart was deliberately omitted from the Alpha 3 version of ML released last December. It seems that we now only get Nightly Builds with no attempt to freeze features & debug a definitive version. I know that this RAW video & Dual ISO stuff is really exiting for the developers but for those of us using the 5D3 for paid event work having Movie Restart would be far more useful. The current versions are more polished but I would be perfectly happy just to have only the features in the Alpha 3 version with Movie Restart added. Zebras, peaking & extra Info display like GB free on card is such an improvement over stock firmware that it keeps me happy enough but knowing that Movie Restart is possible & was working is very frustrating.

TBH, I never had the patience to wait for half an hour to see if it really works.
I was shooting a wedding last Friday with ML on two 5D3s. Movie Restart was On but during the ceremony both stopped at 29'59". I really just wanted to know if it is supposed to work. I was assuming that it should be working otherwise what is the point in having the setup menu option? If failure to restart is a bug then I'd like to notify it as such so perhaps someone will take a look at fixing it.

General Help Q&A / Re: 5D Mkiii record restart

The menu option is there but it doesn't work at least not in the 2nd August Nightly Build that I just used. It's annoying testing whether it's working or not means waiting for 30 minutes:-) I would be grateful if anyone can confirm whether this should be working or indeed has had it working on another build.

Feature Requests / [DONE] Movie Restart on 5D3?
August 10, 2013, 01:27:09 PM
I have been using the Alpha 3 build of ML for months but finally got around to trying a more bleeding edge version to whit the August 2nd Nightly Build with RAW video etc. I was excited to see that an option for Movie Restart is available under the Movie Tweaks menu. However this doesn't appear to be working. Is this deliberate? I recall some discussion when ML was ported to the 5D3 that this was omitted (for reasons that didn't make sense to me). If there has been a policy decision to omit this code from the 5D3 Nightly Build is it possible for me to take the source code & build it myself with the Movie Restart function? I was a software engineer in a former life so this would be a viable option for me. ALternatively is this just a bug in that Nightly Build?

Here in the EU all DV camcorders that had a Firewire input were classed as video recorders & subject to 14% import duty rather than the 4.9% for video cameras. To avoid paying the tax the manufacturers disabled DV-in but it was possible either by entering a service mode on the camera or using so-called DV-Enabler device to re-enable the DV input. This has echoes in the way that many DVD & Blu-ray players can be rendered region-free by similar methods.

Quote from: scrax on January 19, 2013, 04:47:59 PMThat external recorder, if imported to EU, has to pay the tax since it will record more than 29'59". That's why Canon don't have to pay the import tax even with clean output.
No clean HDMI output does not make it a video camera because the camera itself will not record >30 minutes of video. You could record the clean video stream with a computer & capture card & no duty for any recording equipment would be liable.

Here in the EU there is 0% import duty on digital stills cameras but 4.9% on video cameras. Here is an extract from the actual regulations defining what is a video camera

products are classified as still image digital cameras 'unless they are capable, using the maximum storage capacity, of recording in a quality of 800 x 600 pixels (or higher) at 23 frames per second (or higher) at least 30 minutes in a single sequence of video'. Cameras that meet each of these criteria will be classified as video camera recorders.

Auto restart where there is a break in recording does not produce a single sequence of video hence even if it were implemented by Canon would not make the 5D3 a video camera under this definition.

As mentioned a few times, this feature is surrounded by some legal uncertainity. On 5D3 and probably on all DIGIC V cameras, the only purpose of this feature would be to bypass the 30-minute legal limit (because Canon already removed the 4GB one). Bring some lawyers to prove that it's OK, and I'll enable it.
Auto restart is exactly what it says. It restarts recording after a short break but it does not remove the 30 recording minute limit as e.g. the GH2 hack does. It's exactly the same as if you press the record button again immediately after recording stops. How can there be any objection to that?

The new firmware for the 5D3 allowing clean HDMI output will ignore the 30 minute limit if you connect an external recorder but does not require Canon to impose a limit to evade the EU tax because it is not an in-built recording function.

There is no real comparison between the GH2 hack & Magic Lantern. The GH2 hack i just a way of accessing the internal controls of the camera & adjusting them e.g. increasing bit rate etc. there are no extra features. Magic Lantern is a fully featured reverse engineered additional interface with a load of extra features e.g. zebras peaking Magic Zoom HDR etc

General Help Q&A / Re: Ml 5D3 installation procedure
October 26, 2012, 07:34:42 PM
You need the ml-5D3-113.fir file & the ML folder containing all the required files in the top level directory. I just unzipped magiclantern-5D3.113.alpha2.zip & copied the contents of the magiclantern-5D3.113.alpha2 folder created to the top level of the SD card.

I just downloaded the Alpha version for the 5D3. Now it's either a problem on my part or a problem with the documentation for while I managed to figure out that I needed to push the trash can button to access lots of pretty menus & I was able to navigate these menus to select zebras & peaking unfortunately I don't see anything has changed when I am using the camera. I am assuming that there is some other combination of buttons that needs to be pushed to actually activate zebras & peaking so please could someone tell me what they are. A simple step by step press this press that guide would be a good idea rather than assuming that everyone just knows how to use it or gets told by someone who is experienced.
