But would you still recommend RAW video and the 5d Mark III for documentary work too?
Depends, do you NEED it?

Hello, I'm getting a black bar on the right when I do 3x. It's not there the first few frames then it pops up. I followed all of the settings from the video, 24P 1080 build from couple days ago 5d3 with a Kombuterbay 1000x 64.

Also does 3x the only zoom factor that works? I thought it would go in 2 levels. When I push the zoom button again it goes in on the screen but same mag factor on record.
Move the joystick to the left. Probably about 7 or so steps. I'm not sure WHY it happens, but move your recording area over, fixes it.

Raw can not be recorded through the hdmi, only the cards.
What I would recommend is either, taking a laptop with you(to dump the footage when you swap cards), or one of the field hard drives.
The hard drives are about as big as a H4n recorder I believe and they allow you to insert your memory card and it copies all of the data to the hard drive. These are small, compact, and seem to be useful. I've never used one, but I've heard good things!

2 things I've noticed.
I am using a tablet as field monitor. But its hooked up to my camera(5D3) through USB.
One thing I've noticed is that I'm getting MUCH less frames at 2560x1090
When the tab is NOT connected to the camera, I get about 950 frames at that resolution.
When the tablet IS connected to the camera, I'm only getting about 320-340 frames
Any plans to make this better?

Also, when recording at 2560x1090, I noticed that after about the 3rd recording, I start to get less frames as well. Sometimes it's 100 less, sometime 2-300 less frames.
I haven't done MANY tests, but the few that I have, that's what happened. Im using Lourencos latest build.

Another sample, this time a video frame from 5D3:

(bottom left is ISO 100, top right is with a small ADTG trick, at the same shutter speed and aperture; both graded with the above script so I could compare them)

DNG

Still fine-tuning the details.
ISP ONE HUNDRED... Is the noisy one?
How'd it get so noisy?
Pitch black room, you got it that bright in post?

As we all know, when plugging our cameras into a usb device for monitoring(or hd device), the amount of frames that we can record without dropping goes down. Im curious, will there be a possibilty to use the devices in the future with less strain on our camers? Without these monitors giving us less recording time?

Did you charge the battery?
Try charging the battery, turn the camera on, then turn the camera off. Remove the battery first then the card, then put the battery back in then turn the camera on.

Raw Video / Re: Video in 3.5k raw
July 13, 2013, 06:30:22 AM
I uploaded a 2.5K video the other day. It allowed it to be viewed with the ''original quality' setting. I went back to it a few hours later and *poof* that setting was gone and now the highest quality that you can select is 1080p.
I noticed that the highest quality on YOUR video that can be selected is 1080p as well.
Does anyone know why youtube removes the original quality option when they were advertising it?
Also, how long do they allow the option to remain before removing it?

I own a Nexus 7 which I hook up to my 50D.
Hook up over USB
Using the app DSLR Controller you have full control over all Canon functions.  Focus, ISO, Shutter, Focus, etc.
Usually outputs around 15fps which is pretty reasonable for video review on set.
Using this app, it does not show any of the Magic Lantern functions. However, it does have a few of its own. Bracketing, Timelapse, etc.

The Glaxay Tab 2 should work for you.

Be warned though, if you plan on shooting RAW video, you will get no video output over USB with RAW enabled.  I tested this in the 50D dev thread for RAW video, and as of now there is no workaround.

I LOVE THIS TABLET NOW!!!
I'm able to record with Raw WHILE viewing on the tablet and its not even having an effect on my write speed. Maybe it's because I have a 5D3. Maybe the 50d is your problem?

I'm in the parking lot of Frys right now so I literally just got this going but had to write about it. I'll do a more thorough testing when I get home. I do hope that focus peak and everything else works.

Hardware and Accessories / Oh golly gosh!

I was contemplating buying a monitor for focus or whatnot. I was thinking small hd.
Instea of doing that, I thought I'd try the cheap way out first. So, I went to my nearest electronic store and picked up a Nexus 7 16GB for $169.99
Then I searched for HOURS to find a micro USB to female USB A OTG plug to hook my camera up to this thing. In the entire Chicago are there was ONE store that had this item which was Frys. The cord cost me $6
Then I went and bought the DSLR Controller app. I believe it was $8. I hooked my camera up and I've got Live view!!!
Now, I was quite skeptical because these controllers are usually VERY sluggis(think eos software that comes with camera) but this tablet shows the image damn near instantaneous very smooth it's unbelievable. I bought this anticipating taking it back for not working how I hoped it would. Now I guess I'm out of my money because I'm keeping it. So, for those wanting a monitor for focus and just an all around bigger view(7") this entire setup only cost me $184(really $214 after taxes)
I have TWO issues.
1) it doesn't work with my iPad. Idiot Apple smh. Would have saved me $200
2) while recording in crop mode(raw video) the image that ML shows me(the hacked one in black in white for the correct field of view) shows up in normale color on the tab(not a bad thing) BUT its waaaaay to the side. What I see on the cam and on tab(in crop mode) are two different things.
Any ideas on how I might be able to over come this anyone?

If anyone is curious. I'm using a 5D3. I'm soooooo glad I didn't just dish out the money to smallHD
I sound like a commercial but I promise, neither of these products are mine(except for the ones that I just paid for)

Most clients I deal with want a 1080P deliverable and I was curious to see how it would look scaled down.

This is the first time I hit the Resolve Lite 1080P ceiling, it made me sad...
Anyway you'd be willing to upload the full file? I'd like to check it out

I have been creeping for far too long...I have to start interacting with you nice people.

Here is a RAW 3.5K test, done in Resolve with Hook's LUT and then scaled down to 1080P.

Why shoot 3.5k and scale it down?

It seems that all of the Raw builds have been updated except for the 5D3. Does anyone have a newly compiled build from today that they are willing to upload?

Hardware and Accessories / Monitoring on tablets
July 12, 2013, 02:31:16 AM
Does anyone own an android tablet that allows you to hook up your canon and view the cameras Live view on the tablets display?
If so, how are you hooking it up? Usb or HDMI?
Is it easy and clear to focus
Also, what is the lag time?
Last, if you are using Magic Lantern on your camera, how is it looking on the tablet?

I'm thinking about buying something like this
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Samsung+-+Galaxy+Tab+2+7.0+with+8GB+Memory+-+Titanium+Silver/5064393.p?id=1218604366681&skuId=5064393

Do you think it will work good?
By the way, this will be used for video, not photos so it's got to be pretty smooth with preferably no lag time to get a good focus on moving people

Raw Video / Re: 60FPS slow motion

Yes, you can not do 60p in crop mode. I figured it out. And it fps over ride won't go anywhere near 60fps

Raw Video / 60FPS slow motion
July 09, 2013, 05:52:41 AM
I have two questions.
I recorded some footage in crop mode and had the canon menu set to 60fps@720p. When I etracted the dngs using raw magic, it said 29.97fps.
I couldn't figure out why I was unable to record in 60p. If anyone else has the same issue, the answer is that crop mode doesn't allow 60p.
Now, my first question is, is there anyway to record crop mode using canons 60p mode, or will it be possible, to record a higher resolution than 1920 vertical without crop mode in the future?
My second question is... The aspect ration wont ever allow for a 2:35.1 when shooting 60p. So the image they say is squeezed as the vertical is alot less(like 500 something). Is the actually recording it squeezed so that when I stretch it to 818 vertical it would be a normal size, or when I stretch it to 818 will it actually be a lot longer looking than it would if I were to just naturally record it at 1920x818 (24fps)?

Selected 720p 50fps in the canon menu then loaded the raw plugin in Magic Lantern. Raw resolution selected at 1080p and 2.35:1 aspect ratio. no fps override. All other plugins were disabled to free up the buffers.

Was filmed using a glide cam and some of the shots were further stabilized in premiere.

Port Willy is great! I'm lucky enough to live there :D
I tried selecting the 60fps in the canon menu and I had fps override in ML menu set to off, then I recorded a clip. I was able to get quite a long clip at above 1080p which didn't seem normal(for 60p). Problem is, when I brought it into Rawmagic, it showed up as 29.97 fps.
Did yours show the same as well???

Also, in post, did you use twixtor or something, or did you simply drop the file on a 25fps timeline?

One more test please. How many frames at 2560x1072 2.35:1 aspect ratio

Raw Video Postprocessing / Re: Pomfort ClipHouse
July 09, 2013, 12:30:11 AM
ISSUE I exported a 'colored' file with the 422 pro res output setting(I believe) the setting was a 1920x1020 setting(which is how I export in after effects)
but the input file that I recorded was 1920x818 2.35:1 aspect ration.
When I viewed the exported file from THIS program, they created the 1080 image, but instead of the picture being in the middle(like AE would do) it put the image on the top.
so I have a huge black area under the photo and no black above the picture. That should be a fix as not all incoming vid, will be 1080 vertical

In order to change the setting for the export clip, you drag one from the list, to the clip where it shows it's current export settings. This isn't clear and I'm not sure if it works for clips that already have a setting, as I've only done it when adding a new location

Another thing. One of the settings for export I accidently deleted.
I selected a clip and hit delete since it was going to be exporting somewhere on the hard drive that i didn't want, but when I deleted that export location, it took the pro res 422 option out of the list of available presets???

I can't figure out how to change the output quality of the videos that have been colored.
Also, is there any way to actually set your own resolution for the output? I have a file bigger than 1080p
