Raw Video / Samples???
November 06, 2013, 02:47:10 AM
Anyone with raw video samples that they dont mind uploading online(say dropbox or a site similar)
I;d like to do some grading tests. Id appreciate it.
I will NOT upload my results anywhere unless you state that you don't mind.
As many clips as possible. any length(longer than 5 seconds please)
Everyone, feel free to place your files here if you don't mind me doing some grading on them.
Thankyou so much!
I sold my 5d3 and am getting bored so would like to try out some new techniques until I buy another cam. Prores or any flat videos are fine, but I would rather the .raw files or dngs or tifs.

General Chat / Sharper video, REAL cinematic look?
August 14, 2013, 03:19:19 AM
Now, we have the 180 degree rule.
for cinematic look, they say to shoot at around 24fps with 180 degree shutter so about 1/48 shutter speed.
BUT, I notice that when most people shoot with these settings, it looks ok, but real videos have a MUCH crisper less blurry image. Just take any movie and pause it when a person is moving(not FAST of course) and you can still see perfect image. Now pause your video with these settings, everything is really really blurry.
I mean, even folks who shoot the black magic, like in the link below. Pause it anywhere on the video with movement and it still looks crisp! anyway to get this quality. Sure, I guess the slow shutter speed creates a filmic look by using the blur it creates, but are we creating TOO much blur?

Raw Video Postprocessing / Raw2dng help!
July 22, 2013, 06:14:16 AM
So, all of this raw shooting has me running out of disk space.
I had a file on a CF card.
I loaded up raw2dng for the mac(created by scrax)
I dragged the app icon onto the opened app to get to the settings
I selected an out put folder which was on my CF card, in the folder that the RAW file was placed in.
Before the process started, my computers hard drive had 9GB available(my computer NOT the CF card)
when Raw2DNG was finished, the files weren't on my CF card, but my computers hard drive was now only 4GB remaining.
Where can I find these lost files?
I've tried to view package contents of the raw2dng app and they aren't in there.
This may have happened because my Cf card is called 'CF Card' and I heard that there's a problem converting into folders with spaces in their names.
But where on my computer can these files be?

Raw Video Postprocessing / How many bits?
July 21, 2013, 02:49:18 AM
I know that none of the programs to extract the DNG's from the raw files are able to produce 14 bit.
With that said, I'd like to get a list of programs and their corresponding outputs(12 bits, 16 bits)
also, please post if they have any negatives(pink frames, black vertical lines...)
Also, please post if they output the regular DNGs, or cinema DNGs
Im curious to know which would be the best program for me to use to extract these dngs

I am on a mac, but wouldn't mind if you list the PC programs as well so that others can make use of the list.

As we all know, when plugging our cameras into a usb device for monitoring(or hd device), the amount of frames that we can record without dropping goes down. Im curious, will there be a possibilty to use the devices in the future with less strain on our camers? Without these monitors giving us less recording time?

Hardware and Accessories / Monitoring on tablets
July 12, 2013, 02:31:16 AM
Does anyone own an android tablet that allows you to hook up your canon and view the cameras Live view on the tablets display?
If so, how are you hooking it up? Usb or HDMI?
Is it easy and clear to focus
Also, what is the lag time?
Last, if you are using Magic Lantern on your camera, how is it looking on the tablet?

I'm thinking about buying something like this
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Samsung+-+Galaxy+Tab+2+7.0+with+8GB+Memory+-+Titanium+Silver/5064393.p?id=1218604366681&skuId=5064393

Do you think it will work good?
By the way, this will be used for video, not photos so it's got to be pretty smooth with preferably no lag time to get a good focus on moving people

Raw Video / 60FPS slow motion
July 09, 2013, 05:52:41 AM
I have two questions.
I recorded some footage in crop mode and had the canon menu set to 60fps@720p. When I etracted the dngs using raw magic, it said 29.97fps.
I couldn't figure out why I was unable to record in 60p. If anyone else has the same issue, the answer is that crop mode doesn't allow 60p.
Now, my first question is, is there anyway to record crop mode using canons 60p mode, or will it be possible, to record a higher resolution than 1920 vertical without crop mode in the future?
My second question is... The aspect ration wont ever allow for a 2:35.1 when shooting 60p. So the image they say is squeezed as the vertical is alot less(like 500 something). Is the actually recording it squeezed so that when I stretch it to 818 vertical it would be a normal size, or when I stretch it to 818 will it actually be a lot longer looking than it would if I were to just naturally record it at 1920x818 (24fps)?

Post-processing Workflow / Premiere pro coloring
July 05, 2013, 09:24:21 PM
Ok, working in Premiere Pro CS6, I have Magic Bullet Colorista II?
In MB Colorista they have 'secondary' category which allows you to select the skin(by color and tone using a key) and applying whatever colorista settings you want to it, or you can invert the skin selection and apply the setting to the surroundings instead.
My question is, when applying a LUT(using lut buddy or something) is there a way to only apply this LUT to only the skin or the scene(without the skin)?
I don't want to use a 'mask'(where you draw an oval or circle shape) as it's not as acurate and the composition changes and the person moves to a different area of the image, then the mask will be off.

Raw Video / Turn your RAW footage into LOG
July 04, 2013, 06:56:08 AM
If you're looking to get the log look from your raw footage, simply open up your DNG's in Adobe After effects(may work with other software that accepts LUTS)

make a new layer
add lut buddy to the new layer
open this LUT
enjoy!

if anyone needs this uploaded to a different site, let me know. I just did a simple google search to find this one

Raw Video / Recording RAW at 30FPS?
July 04, 2013, 12:07:40 AM
I just recorded a bunch of clips. I had FPS override set to 23.976, but for some reason, when I extracted the dngs and brought them into after effects, it automatically showed my footage being imported as 30fps. I have changed this to the desired fps, but is there a reason that its displaying 30? I believe the camera is recording my clips at 30fps, is there a program that will tell me what fps the raw footage was shot in?

EDIT: Raw2ng(the gui for mac) used to show the information for the raw that it was converting. with the 0.13 build, it no longer does. Any idea as to why?

Raw Video / Naming video recording.
July 03, 2013, 10:40:06 PM
I believe the 5d3 has a way of naming the future photos taken in the menu. So I can say that I want the next photos to start with 01 and each photo after would be 011,012,013...
Is there a way to change the way the raw videos record? Would be nice if I shot a few shots and could rename them b4 recording. Ie. when I go outside I'd type 'outside' and the recordings would be outside1,outside2,outside3 so and so forth. That way, it would be much easier to know which recording was taken where.

How is everyone handling their audio?
I will be shooting a music video in a couple of days(that I'd like to shoot completely in raw) and was wondering how everyone is syncing their audio???
what is the easiest method? I have a studio recorded song that will be used as the audio, but when placing the video clips, how would I go about syncing correctly? by eye and ear?

I have yet to buy one. I didn't really want to spend the money as my 600x sandisk worked. Problem is, my card is only a 16gb.
Now, I was ready to purchase the komputerbay card, and it's went up $30 in the last month!

They're $130 now. WOW!

General Chat / Any new updates yet?
June 27, 2013, 10:29:23 PM
Has anyone come up with a software or some way to playback the native RAW files from these cameras yet?
Something like this vimeo video shows(or something in like a VLC player)
https://vimeo.com/67542994#comment_9394519

Also, has anyone come up with a solution to use native raw files in adobe(premiere/after effects) OTHER than Ginger HDR plug in?

Forum and Website / User CP?
June 16, 2013, 08:30:35 PM
Anyway for you all to add a 'user cp' section to the forum? Some way that will allow people to subscribe to threads and we can go to the user cp and see which threads have new responses.
Also, the option to get an email to topics started would be nice.
It's kind of hard to remember which threads we've commented on and what and where we started topics. Would be convenient.

General Help Q&A / Aligning Partition?
June 12, 2013, 04:52:46 PM
Anyone know how to align the partition of a CF card in OSX?
I hear that you get faster speeds for your card by aligning the partition.
any ideas on how to do so?

Post-processing Workflow / Best end quality...
June 08, 2013, 07:19:28 AM
If I were looking to create a 720p video, would I get better quality from shooting and editing it at 720p, or shooting and editing it at 1080p and then exporting it with adobe media encoder to 720p? Or would there not be a difference?

I notice how having a 5mp image from the start doesn't seem as clear as say a 10mp image that is exported to 5mp. Seems like it gets squeezed down therefore being cleaner

I'm not speaking on 1080, I only used the numbers as I don't recall the bigger ratios that ML raw allows.

Raw Video / 1080 vs 720 raw quality
May 18, 2013, 06:27:12 AM
Why is the 720 recording seem to take a huge hit on quality when shooting raw(in comparison to 1080)?
Now, I know that of course 1080 should be a better picture than 720.
But for some reason, it seems to me that 720 isn't even close in quality to the 1080 raw recording.
Am I doing something wrong? Is there a setting that maybe I've over looked?

General Help Q&A / Autoexec.bin?
May 08, 2013, 06:02:27 AM
Is there anyone who is willing to upload the autoexec.bin with the newest nightly build(may 8th) for the 5d3?
I've tried using the older nightly build with the 5d3 fir that Alex posted and it won't boot. I've also tried using the fir from this nightly build with the old autoexec.bin that Alex posted and it does boot, but it states that it's still only the April 30th ML.
I noticed that they've added a couple of things over the last 8 days and would like to try out the newest nightly build, but it states that it's  for the other cameras(5d3 not listed).

Tragic Lantern / Tragic Lantern VS Magic Lantern?
May 08, 2013, 02:56:32 AM
I've noticed "tragic lantern" being used around here. I thought that it was another term for magic lantern. I've since realized that TL offers different raw recording options for the 5d3 than ML. What are the differences between the two? Also, are they created by the same people???
