General Help Q&A / Re: CF card speed restriction?
March 24, 2013, 05:06:41 PM
One of my early cards which I still use is a Kingston 266x, which has roughly 40mb/s write speed. Never had any recordings stopping, so I guess you should be fine with similar cards - Transcend cards (such as the 300x) can be found for quite a cheap price.

Go to 3rd tab of ML menu (Overlay), and set Global Draw (first menu item) to all modes.

General Help Q&A / Re: Using ML with a RODE Videomic
March 19, 2013, 04:24:51 PM
As long as input is set to external, you'll be recording from the Rode Videomic.

However, don't expect that you won't pickup any background noise just because it's a shotgun mic. Just watch out for sound reflections depending on your environment. Personally, I would opt for another mic which can be placed as close as possible to the person being interviewed. I have just finished filming some voxpops and I used a similar setup, and had the person asking questions hold a Zoom H1 with a windshield in front of the person being interviewed just out of frame, and sound was much better than that of my on-camera Rode ViMP.

General Chat / Re: SD to CF adapter for video

As far as I know they are quite limited when it comes to speed. Why not see if the rental company has any available for rental as well?

We use the setup you're talking about at weddings. The audio guy mikes up every source possible into a mixer with 2 outputs: an audio recorder and a Sennheiser transmitter (G3). The receiver is then mounted on the main camera (the one used for speeches etc.) which is connected to the camera through 3.5mm cable. If you're going for this setup, remember to check with the audio guy at the venue to make sure you're not using any of his frequencies.

Alternatively, you can avoid the wireless lav since they're expensive, and get a decent on-camera mic. I use the Rode VideoMicPro. You can then record the feed from the mixer directly into your Tascam recorder and sync everything in post (e.g. with Pluraleyes).

One of these may be the cause:
- Audio recording is disabled from Canon menu (set it to Manual instead of Disabled)
- Audio meters turned off from ML's audio menu
- You're in photo mode

Re-install the latest firmware and try re-installing ML

The only pros of the H1 are its size (compared to other recorders) and its price. For weddings, I find it quite handy to have it attached to a wired AudioTechnica lav for recording speeches.

You're right. Didn't know about that so I just tried it out on an old 18-55 kit lens and even if you set the exposure manually, you can still hear the aperture clicks at certain focal lengths. If you really need to zoom and keep the same exposure, you might try unscrewing the lens a little bit. Tried it out myself and aperture won't change since the lens isn't making any contact  ;)

Feature Requests / Re: Expo lock in video
March 04, 2013, 11:35:16 AM
Why not just set the exposure manually with an aperture of f/5.6? That way the exposure will remain constant at any focal length. I understand that this may not be optimal when shooting in low light, but if you're considering zooming then you'll obviously need to use the f/5.6 aperture.

You sure about negative analogue gain? To my knowledge, the lowest value is 0db (no negative values).

You're not doing anything wrong. It's the way the ML bracketing works. It's also slower on other cameras such as the 60D which has 5.3fps. If you need fast bracketing, stick to Canon's bracketing.

General Help Q&A / Re: video frame by frame

The closest you can get is to reduce the frame rate using FPS override since you want a single MOV file. Not sure if that would be enough for your needs though

In case of: On 550d the User Picture style is NOT working  Neither in preview nor in recording IN THE MOVIE MODE.

It works on the photo mode.

Did you change it while in movie mode?

These are the presets used by Adobe Media Encoder. Note that these are based on 25fps.

Youtube:
Codec: H264
Bitrate: VBR, 2 pass, target 8 Mbps, max 8 Mbps
Key frame distance: 75 (i.e. 3 times the frame rate)
Audio: AAC, 320 kbps, 48 kHz, stereo

Vimeo:
Same as above but replace target and max bitrate to 5 Mbps, and key frame distance to 25 (i.e. same as frame rate)

I use the presets in Adobe Media Encoder for youtube / vimeo uploads. You might want to check them out.. I think you'll manage to find the settings they use online. If not, I can always post them here for you :)
#94
I believe that's what picture styles like Cinestyle do
#95
You might see a minor difference between the t2i/t3i and 5d2 due to the different sensors, but definitely no noticeable difference between the t2i and t3i. I use a 5D2 and 60D for weddings and never had any trouble of footage not matching up.. just make sure you're using the same settings (picture style, wb, etc.) and you're good to go  :)

Combine bracketing and intervalometer  ;)

General Help Q&A / Re: color bars
February 17, 2013, 09:13:37 AM
You can create a custom cropmark with colour bars and set it to one of the display presets so you can quickly switch it on and off as required.

The firmware update process also makes your card bootable, so it's required unless you're using an application to make your card bootable.

Feature Requests / Re: EC on M
February 08, 2013, 08:08:36 AM
Isn't EC only used in automatic modes (P, Av, Tv) where the camera picks the exposure reading? In Manual I don't think this is necessary as changing the shutter speed or aperture basically gives you the same result.

Well shot! I love how natural it looks for an HDR.
