Share Your Videos / UNREAL - short film
March 17, 2014, 12:16:54 PM
As part of my dissertation on the use of colour in film, I have produced a short film called Unreal. It was shot on a 5D2 in ML raw  :)

I would really appreciate it if you watch it and answer a short survey through the link below!

I am primarily a weddings & events shooter, and my current setup is built around a Canon 6D & 5D2 along with several Canon & Samyang lenses. I am currently looking at replacing the 5D2 however I'm quite baffled with the amount of options available.

These are the replacement cameras I am considering:

- 5D3: the next logical step. Advantages include same media (CF), same batteries, high ISO performance, can shoot both h264 (for weddings & events) and ML raw for commercials etc when required

- C100: excellent run & gun camera and log mode would be nice to have, however I find it difficult to spend €4-5k on a camera that still records in 4:2:0 and has been out 2 years

- Blackmagic alternatives: both the BMCC and the 4K version are interesting alternatives and prores would be nice, however their design & ergonomics (such as media & battery) make them look not so ideal for this type of work

Any feedback? Would love to hear what you think or if you have experience with any of the above cameras especially for weddings! Thanks in advance.

Since I'll be shooting a short film in the coming weeks, I've done some testing with ML raw on the 5D2 and so far this is the best (or rather most efficient) workflow I found:

- Converted RAW to CinemaDNG in RAWMagic
- Used Bridge to open each sequence in ACR for exposure changes & colour correction, and applied VisionLOG camera profile
- Imported all sequences into AE & interpreted each sequence at 23.976fps (since default is 30)
- Denoised using Neat Video
- Exported each comp to Prores 4444
- Imported into FCP X
- Added Osiris LUT through LUT Utility and added grain through FilmConvert

If anyone's interested in more details post below  :) I'll also be able to do a video tutorial in the coming weeks if it's of interest.

This topic has been moved to General Chat since it's not directly related to ML and doesn't fall under any of the other subforums.

I'm in the process of building my own minimal build for the 6D, however I noticed that the movie recording time (usually shown in the top right corner) is not visible. What function should I look for, and where is the function related to the debugging info found in the same area (there are some other numbers which I think are related to buffer in the top right corner)?

Share Your Videos / Cyber Trends (short documentary)
April 22, 2013, 10:28:59 AM
Cyber Trends is a documentary about the latest internet sensations happening around us, produced as a project for University. Footage was shot on a 5D2 running ML, with a NEX5N as B-cam.

General Help Q&A / Screenshots with ML overlay
February 06, 2013, 04:38:07 PM
I am trying to take a couple of screenshots showing ML menus or ML overlays in live view, however so far all my screenshots do not show these GUI elements and only show the picture when converted from 422 to jpeg. Am I doing something wrong and/or is there any way to take screenshots of these?

Shot some videos yesterday at this beautiful beach called Ghajn Tuffieha in Malta. Very popular location with tourists in summer, however at this time of the year it's really peaceful. Approximately half of the shots in the video were shot in HDR and processed through Enfuse.

Camera: 60D
Lenses: Canon 10-22, 24-105L, 70-200L, Walimex 35mm T/1.5 cine

Main Builds / Missing files in latest zip (Jan18)
January 18, 2013, 08:57:37 PM
The current nightly build (magiclantern-v2.3.NEXT.2013Jan18.60D.550D.600D.50D.500D.5D2.1100D.zip) seems to have some missing files (for example there is only the .fir for the 1100D).

Share Your Videos / Showreel 2012
December 03, 2012, 03:35:00 PM
Since 2012 is slowly coming to an end, I've made a quick cut of some projects I worked on this year. All footage was shot on the 5D2 and 60D, each running ML. Both timelapses included where shot using ML's intervalometer. The live view tools I use are histogram, zebra, cropmarks and focus assist (especially when using prime lenses).

General Development / OT: Sony NEX & Alpha hack
August 16, 2012, 02:32:18 PM
Hey there!

During the last few days, a developer has shown interest in working on a hack for the NEX & Alpha series on the DVXuser forum. He's already had some success in modifying a firmware for the A55. Me and Andrew Reid (from EOSHD) have offered our help since no one else did, and till now we have already purchased the first camera for this developer in order to use it for research & testing, financed through donations given by users.

The developer (known as Someone1.00) expressed his wish to have other developers who are also interested in this project help him out, which is the reason why I'm writing this post here. He is looking for the following:
- ARM decompilers
- CE Linux guru
- QEMU guru
- Binary file analysers (Linux guys who are able to see images patterns in binary and able to detect encoding or byteorder and depth are required)
- Mac programmers (not really necessary but can still help out to work faster)

Please note that this project is in no way affiliated to Magic Lantern. If any one of you is interested in helping out, please get in touch with me!

More info about this project here:

Thought I'd share with you a small utility for Windows I've written a few months ago in C# in case it's useful to you guys  :)

This is a simple light-weight app which allows you to offload footage from your memory card to your PC. I've found it quite useful as a backup for on-location shooting, and carry it on a small netbook.

Here's a break-down of the features:
- Copy files from memory card to a primary & secondary (optional) location of your choice
- Filter file types to copy (currently MOV, THM, JPG, CR2, WAV, MP3)
- Renaming video files to creation date & time (as a timecode reference)
- Verification of data after copying (by comparing exact file sizes)
- Storing up to 3 profiles (video, audio & photo profiles)
- Quick profile switching using CTRL+1/2/3 keyboard shortcuts
- Copying all Magic Lantern files, only the configuration file (magic.cfg) or the config and hidden.cfg (introduced in ML 2.3) from a pre-defined location
- Generating a shot list based on data obtained from LOG files generated by Magic Lantern, which includes the date & time, lens used, shutter speed, aperture, ISO, focal length, white balance, picture style, FPS, HDR and bitrate
- Exporting shot list to Excel spreadsheet
- Transcoding of HDR videos captured through ML
- Argument passing for running through scripts or batch files

Let me know if you have any ideas for new features or encounter any bugs.

Share Your Photos / HDR photos

Thought I'd share with you some HDR photos I've taken using ML's HDR feature  :)

I believe these were all made out of 3 exposures with 2 EV difference.

I also have some others in my flickr set here:
