Welcome to the forum! Please do make an effort and use a more descriptive title next time round  ;)

I would say remove the 5D2 out of the equation and go for the 5D3 or 6D (5D3 is slightly better for stills.. check out some reviews for detailed comparison). Then again, I'm sure you'll enjoy whichever one you end up getting!

If I want to install new firmware from the 1DX on 1DC?

Why would you want to do that? They are 2 different cameras, so I'm quite sure that's not possible.

Share Your Videos / UNREAL - short film
March 17, 2014, 12:16:54 PM
As part of my dissertation on the use of colour in film, I have produced a short film called Unreal. It was shot on a 5D2 in ML raw  :)

I would really appreciate it if you watch it and answer a short survey through the link below!

I'm sure he means playing the sound when starting recording  ;)

Interesting discussion  :D Picture styles seem to be a rather hot topic that no one agrees upon. We did do some tests of our own for weddings and found that Cinestyle did introduce a bit of noise in the shadows even when exposure is next to perfect. We ended up going with PB's Neutral Flat.

For now I've decided to wait till April to see if Canon does indeed replace the C100 (as the rumour mill goes) before making the decision. The GH4 should come out by then as well so I'll have some time to see reviews and samples as well.

I am primarily a weddings & events shooter, and my current setup is built around a Canon 6D & 5D2 along with several Canon & Samyang lenses. I am currently looking at replacing the 5D2 however I'm quite baffled with the amount of options available.

These are the replacement cameras I am considering:

- 5D3: the next logical step. Advantages include same media (CF), same batteries, high ISO performance, can shoot both h264 (for weddings & events) and ML raw for commercials etc when required

- C100: excellent run & gun camera and log mode would be nice to have, however I find it difficult to spend €4-5k on a camera that still records in 4:2:0 and has been out 2 years

- Blackmagic alternatives: both the BMCC and the 4K version are interesting alternatives and prores would be nice, however their design & ergonomics (such as media & battery) make them look not so ideal for this type of work

Any feedback? Would love to hear what you think or if you have experience with any of the above cameras especially for weddings! Thanks in advance.

I found it best to export in the highest quality possible (ProRes 422 HQ or Quicktime PNG sequence usually do the job depending on what I'm exporting) and then convert to H264 using one of the Youtube presets in Adobe Media Encoder

Did you run firmware update on camera when you place ML files on SD card?

Raw Video / Re: Missing frames with ML? Why?
January 24, 2014, 04:44:26 PM
It means your card isn't able to keep up speed-wise with the settings (resolution, aspect ratio, frame rate, etc..) you're using.

There should be an option to stop recording when a frame is dropped.

I'm guessing you're using the stable 2.3 version. Download the latest nightly build from the url below and make sure to overwrite the files you have from the 2.3 release with these.

Tragic Lantern / Re: Green cast after
January 22, 2014, 09:04:51 PM
Not sure if it's related, but I do find that when processing raw files with Adobe Camera RAW after converting them to cDNG through RAWMagic, the green/magenta slider is set to around -23 by default, giving the whole image a green cast.

that bullet was close!!!  :o

thank you!!  ;)

I was wondering...
If I use several sd cards I need to have ML files in every card after installation?
Or I don't need those ML files on any card anymore?

Regards,

Yep, you need the ML files on all cards you intend to use ML with  :)

I suppose you mean the stable version as this one:

Even if I got a 650D right? not an alpha version...
If I understand you well, I guess I should replace only those files that nightly build zip overwrites.

thank you

Sorry about that, forgot there's no stable release for the 650D. Download the alpha version from the link dmilligan posted (2 posts up), then update any new files from latest nightly build to get new features.

Helo there,
First of all, thank you very much for improving the software in our Canons!!
I've been trying to install LM in my T4i /650D but I can't. I've had read the install guide, an several other guides on the net but I simply can't...

My camera says something like ".fir file needed" and in fact there is no .fir file in the downloaded zip.

What can I do???
I'm using magiclantern-v2.3.NEXT.2014Jan06.650D104
Camera firmware updated to the correct version (1.0.2)
4GB Sandisk SD formated in camera -Low level-
4GB Sandisk SD prepared on macboot in MAC, even EOScard on Win
Inner zip files loaded to the SD card

nothing...

.fir file needed..""

Thanx in advance!!

Download the stable 2.3 release from the downloads page, then extract & replace new files from the nightly build you downloaded in order to get the latest features. Nightly builds don't come as complete releases.

Raw Video / Re: Not sure if am doing things right
January 14, 2014, 05:36:09 PM
Exposure is good.

Raw footage is shown as rec709 by default, so it won't look flat unless you convert it to log (for example BMDFilm in Resolve or VisionColor in ACR). Converting to log may be useful for applying certain LUTs.

Does something like this look better?

Hello folks,

sorry for opening that old threat again, but i'm currently using a 6D as well and the moire issues are horrible. It seems like that filter does a lot to solve that exact problem, but still kgv5 mentioned he's got a 5Dmk3, although the filter does a good job. My question is whether the 5dmk3 is worth the money when the filter works just fine.
Maybe kgv5 could give some insights about his thoughts on that particular topic, as he now is in the perfect position to summarize whether the 5dmk3 really is the better choice for video (especially raw) or if the 6D with the vaf filter would be totally ok?
I guess he wouldn't have bought the 5D then?

cheers!

For raw video, the 5D3 is definitely a better choice since it takes CF cards (unlike the 6D). For h264 video I would say the 6D with VAF filter is an excellent choice.

Raw Video / Re: Real world use of RAW video on DSLRs?
January 13, 2014, 05:24:14 PM
Raw video has it's uses. It can't really be just good or just bad. I for one rarely use it, and in fact I've only just began experimenting with it recently as I'm aiming to use it for a short film which I'll be producing soon. I definitely wouldn't imagine shooting weddings & events in raw.

My point is that it really depends on what you're doing. This can easily be compared to cars: having a sports car can be wonderful, but I'd rather get a 4x4 if I'm driving on rough terrain.

Raw Video Postprocessing / Re: Raw workflow - Mac
January 13, 2014, 05:19:13 PM
Having an external drive definitely helps. One of the most cost-efficient storage solution which still gives good speeds is getting a USB3 dock and using 7200rpm drives.

What kind of workflow are you using? Are you using any particular programs (Resolve, AE..)? Since you mentioned that you're using a slow computer, you should definitely look into integrating proxy footage in your workflow which should help performance-wise during editing (it won't affect rendering performance though since you'll need to reconnect original media).

It's greate news about sound with RAW, but after update of firmware I have an error on my 5dm2

> tcc: error: undefined symbol 'mlv_set_type'
> tcc: error: undefined symbol 'mlv_rec_set_rel_timestamp'
> [E] failed to link modules

Can somebody help me with this error ? :)

Most probably you enabled the mlv_snd module without enabling the mlv_rec module. Make sure that both are enabled

Since I'll be shooting a short film in the coming weeks, I've done some testing with ML raw on the 5D2 and so far this is the best (or rather most efficient) workflow I found:

- Converted RAW to CinemaDNG in RAWMagic
- Used Bridge to open each sequence in ACR for exposure changes & colour correction, and applied VisionLOG camera profile
- Imported all sequences into AE & interpreted each sequence at 23.976fps (since default is 30)
- Denoised using Neat Video
- Exported each comp to Prores 4444
- Imported into FCP X
- Added Osiris LUT through LUT Utility and added grain through FilmConvert

If anyone's interested in more details post below  :) I'll also be able to do a video tutorial in the coming weeks if it's of interest.

For something 'pocketable', definitely the RX100 (or m2). Produces lovely photos & video for it's size (EOSHD had some great footage shot with it).

Raw Video / Re: Real world use of RAW video on DSLRs?
January 08, 2014, 09:41:33 PM
Just like RAW photos, the primary reasons for shooting RAW are more latitude (ability to bring back highlights and shadows to a certain extent) and changing white balance in post. Tests have also shown that even when shooting raw video at a resolution lower than 1080p and upscaling it to 1080p, it is often sharper than standard 1080p H264 footage.

I have never actually shot in raw for any real work (apart from personal footage & tests) since I mostly shoot weddings & events. I think it's nice to have a camera capable of shooting raw video, and I wouldn't think twice to use it when the need arises (such as commercials). In fact it's the primary reason why I'm keeping my 5D2 as a second body to my 6D :)

Camera Emergency Department / Re: 5d mk2 does not boot...
November 24, 2013, 03:47:15 PM
Hope you've managed to resolve the issue by now. If not, can you please provide more details such as whether or not you were already running ML on the camera or whether you were still installing it? Also, did you try booting from a bootable card with all the necessary ML files? The only way I've managed to encounter this issue thus far is by having a bootable card without the ML files.
