Hardware and Accessories / Re: SanDisk Extreme Card Details
« on: April 23, 2014, 08:51:31 AM »
I believe Sandisk 120MB/s cards only writes at 60MB/s. I just tried one of their Extreme Pro 100MB/s* cards (that claim to write at speeds up to 100MB/s, however I only get about 60-65MB/s which is not enough for max resolution recording on my 5Dmk2.
I will try to get hold of a Sandisk Extreme Pro 160MB/s (their fastest with write-speed up to 150MB/s) today. This card has something they call VPG65 which means video performance guaranteed at min 65MB/s, so I believe this will max out my camera.

I will come back to this thread to report my findings.

Really nice images Ryan!

@HamboDeluxe : Search the forum for info about the bootflag. I believe it is not possible to remove it safely yet, but try search the forum (I know that there is some function for removing bootflag in latest nightlies, but don't know if this is completely correct/working etc.

I have been looking around for one of those benchmark threads. Just returned a Transcend 64GB 1000x card because it got unusable after a couple of recordings.
Changed it (in the store) to a Sandisk 128GB 100MB/s (667x). This card really performed well with a stable 60-65MB/s write speed. However this seem to be on the edge of too low for my 5Dmk2 (1856x928) for continuous recording (that should be possible with a 1000x card according to Ted Ramasola here:

Tomorrow I will return the Sandisk 128GB in favor for a Sandisk 64GB 160MB/s. Hopefully that is good enough for highest possible recording on the 5D2.

Trying to figure out if 1856x844 is the highest resolution I can get with my 5dmkii?
If not - will a Sandisk Extreeme Pro 160MB/s do any difference against my current Sandisk Extreeme Pro 100MB/s?

So far i have tested:
Transcend 64GB 1000x (not stable for even 1856x844) - sometimes continuous, but mostly just some seconds. I returned it.
 Sandisk 128GB 100MB/s* (stable 1856x844 MLV w. sound). - only about 500 frames if going 1856x928

By the way, does anyone know if there is any live thread to post the 5min ppm (benchmark-files) for above cards?

Regarding Transcend 64GB 1000x.
I will return mine, because I think it is very unstable in its performance. It's like it is fast only at certain areas on the card, like if its only fast first time you write data on it, then it gets slow. I don't know if this is correlated but my card is very slow the first 2 GB (only 300 frames before framedrop) then it records continuously for about 10 min.

If I benchmark the card i get very various results - but at the moment only between 35-80MB/s write speed.

The store will have the card replaced for another of their brands if I wish. I am Thinking of adding some money and go for a Sandisk 100mb/s (according to test data that card is above 83mb/s write, and so sufficient for 1856x844 RAW recording on my 5Dmkii).

Feature Requests / Re: Silent pictures raw full camera resolution

Is this implemented anywhere or has anyone experimented with this yet? (bump)

Hi, just tried the latest version (1.1.4) - but if I do MOVs the files are created in an old directory (where i was using it the first time).
Is it possible to change output directory - or shouldn't it just save the output in the same directory as the source (if that is the case, I seem to have found a bug?) Anyway - great work! Use this alot!

tried several MLV files + MLVs from the latest nightly build

Raw Video / Re: 2014: NEW Current Raw Capabilities
« on: March 30, 2014, 11:58:58 AM »
Ok, so about the new raw capabilities, does anyone know a good thread for all the compiled (OSX) versions of the
- MLRawViewer
- raw2dng
- mlv_dump
- cr2hdr (or is this automagically supported in the raw2dng now?)

Anyway, if there are no compiled binaries for the above - where do I get the latest source of these things? I can't seem to find it on the bitbucket page?
So, can anyone point me in the right direction?

This is so neat! Thanks a lot!
Great work!

I am doing all my work on a macbook air 1.7Ghz i7 with 500GB SSD and 8 GB ram. I just started to experiment with filming in RAW and it is possible to work with if using proxies. However, with a dedicated GPU (as in my old iMac) I could run daVinci Resolve (this is unfortunately not possible with current setup).

SSD is the most important thing for fast editing etc.

Prof of concept is that I did everything in this ad on my macbook pro (even the VFX). (Not filmed in raw though)

I have tried two lenses with mars 15 build.
Both goes on, putting random dots all over the line up to +- 100 (until I cancel).
My lenses are: Tamron 24-70 2.8 vc & Canon 50 1.4

Same behaviour on both lenses.
Camera: 5d mark ii
build:mars 14

The problem is with all the other cameras e.g. 5d3,6d . Read the link that a1ex talk about.
There  asking the 5d2 user if there want 1888 or 1856 , Do Not leave This in the hands of the
Other people to decide for you ! Just because some more work , beside all that
The 5D Mark2 should be not limited , Its the Camera that Started
The DSLR  revolution and gave Birth to Magic Latern ! So let make this camera
The best it can be even it we have to put more work in the code. It's well worth the extra
effort .

Well, if I had to choose between some few extra pixels and perhaps higher dynamic range, faster recording (continous as say 1856 - I have a 1000x card but it still stops sometimes), shutter-free full-res timelapse etc I would go for the latter. That means, any time the developer needs to put into this few extra pixels is lost time in other development areas. Im just saying that the difference seems too small for me to care. Anyway its my oppinion - thats what forum are for :)

Nice images. Some aliasing problems. Did you try to denoise it with neat video or something. (I also have the 5D2 an I actually had to track/replace problem areas in my previous work due to the aliasing problems).

I liked the film! Great work

I would vote for letting the developers decide, but would encourage to keep it simple. Exceptions might be added later (if really needed). If kept simple, more time can be put into other work, and the releases might get even more stable.
Again, thanks all devs for great work!

Nice Work!

Which build works the best for 5D mk ii ?
I have following the nightlies for a while, but since february (i think) the raw_rec module does not seem to work (gives me early stop (8-11) error). Does anyone know a good release or a deadly combo of modules of different release dates (i know, don't). By the way - the MLV works for me without problem.

Have I missed something here or does this feature not work in 5Dm2?
For any of my lenses (restored camera settings, new ml 8th of feb) - the dot-tune module iterates for eternity. It does not seem to change anything between the beeps and results always ends up at 0 (no change).

What have I missed? (RTFM - is there a manual somewhere?)

Main Builds / Re: Nightly Builds - try the very latest stuff here

I don't want to dictate what others should do, so I'll only decide what I should do. I just can't continue like that, sorry.

I think you do the right thing not dictating (not much for regulation), however, is there anything one can contribute with, other than programming? I mean, would money solve anything?
Maybe one could start a tip-jar for people working with the unified ML-branch? Maybe a simple list with things/functions that need to be unified before new features, and a tip-jar for it. Could that encourage people to do some "boring" programming for the sake of the ML-project?

nice edit and great colors!

I have the similar question. The current SilentPicture is 1880x1250, but I can record raw (just a few hundred frames at 2144 x 1076 in crop-mode. Can someone point me to the discussion behind the RAW function?

I can recall that one early version (or maybe the recent?) SilentPic was a cropped scan trough the whole sensor. I don't remember the resolution though. But to me, (with my absence of knowledge), it appears to be possible to sequentially scan the whole sensor and store the info in separate files, say every 1 minute without letting the mirror go down (like silent pic) and then just turn off the LCD meanwhile.

In post, one could stitch the images to one large etc...

When paning back and forth in 1:85:1, I get around 50-55 seconds.

Why would there be any difference if you move the camera? If it was any compressed video I would assume the bitrate to be higher if panning, but in RAW?

Im testing right now and got continuos recording in 1872x936 (2:1) with sound.
Global Draw: Allow
Preview: Auto
(didn't improve anything turning them off)

Transcend 64GB 1000x
Extra hacks on, card warmup (128 MB)
Global Draw OFF

Get 305 frames on max 1872x1054 (16:9) compared to 244 on last build (not very scientific, but anyway)

mlv_rec seem to perform better than raw_rec? (with raw rec I only got continous when using 2.20:1). Is it a different Buffer fill method? (4 seems to work best for me). Will do more testing.

Great work!

No magic bullet, but I would appreciate not having to use the resolve GUI on my mac book air (takes minutes to just load it with dngs :) so, for me a batch approach would save time (the time I sleep :P )

I know resolve and have used it for several years now, but I still need a more batch-like approach when working on my mac book air (yes, it's working with raw). Resolve is veeeery slow on my mac book air making any dng->prores very cumbersome. working with prores in AE or Premiere works like a charm and ideal (for me) would be to have a batch going from MLV -> Prores (w. correct WB) + audio.

I don't know how these formats work and how white balance is burned into prores but not dng (need to do some research there), however hasn't the white balance been saved in the "exif"info of the new MLV format?

Good work so far though!
