General Chat / Sensor Sampling and Dual ISO
August 20, 2013, 02:41:08 AM
This may be a stupid question for you, and sorry if it is but I have to ask.
The dual iso mode changes the way in which sensor is sampled, right? Since it reads every other line at different ISO. Would it be possible to change the way in which sensor samples the image on cameras other than 5DmIII so that we would get rid of the line skipping and kill moire? Maybe make the image sharper along the way.

Raw Video / Canon 650D/T4i RAW Video Thread

Here's a thread for Canon 650D/T4i RAW Video that nanomad suggested so you can keep your 650D RAW discussions here ;)

No, that's just the data rate of the codec.

dont know if this is actual write speed proof due to it being a H264 stream but quicktime reads the data rate at 64.27mbps on the file straight from the camera.

ignore the current size, thats just the size of the video in the window not the actual video size.

footage is HDR video from a high street, lots of chroma and luma variation plus switching ISO values between frames with CBR +1.4 active.

That's Mb/s. It's quite different from MB/s. One byte contains eight bits so 64.27 megabits per second is not the same as 64.7 megabytes per second.
Cheers

What's the best resolution we could hope for on 650D raw? Could we get something in the neighbourhood of 1920x800? Cheers! And thank you for you hard work!

It's a pity that Canon made a mess with the SD controller. It says that it's UHS I, but the writing speed doesn't really confirm this. It could have been a decent raw recording little camera. I hope ML guys will be able to squeeze something out of it.

Good luck doing that in camera ;)

But could it be done in camera? Either to Lossy DNG or mjpeg. Do you think there is enough processing power?

Hi, 1% mentioned mjpeg, do you think that it could theoretically be possible to compress the DNG stream to get mjpeg video in camera? Even on SD cards like Sandisk Extreme? If you could make it output 2k mjpeg that would be more exciting to me personally than raw. I don't even have to tell you how great you guys are, that's a well known fact!

You're right. 700d is the same as 600d bar the touch screen. I don't see any particular advantages of the faster processor and 600d has the advantage of having ML so it's the best of the 3. I was a fool and got 650d the day it got out because I thought it can't possibly be worse than 600d that would be impossible and it was worse! I can't see how a responsible company could do such a thing!

Thanks for the reply. I'm not a programmer but I thought it would be possible to maybe somehow see the difference between the two firmwares and that would help you enable the option on 650d. Maybe that is only logical inside my head.  Since Nanomad used EOS M's firmware to start the ML port on the 650d I figured maybe this would be possible too. But it obviously isn't that simple.

Hi guys,
I was wondering whether at some point you could use the 700d firmware to restore the Video crop mode on the 650d? Since 700d has it and 650d doesn't as you already know. 700D should have been a firmware update for the 650d not a new model. I don't know what Canon is doing these days but I sure don't like it. I'm a life long Canon customer and the only reason I'm still using Canon is Magic Lantern. It will cost them a lot if they continue this business model, seriously they should pay you for what you are doing, they should hire you to develop their official firmwares because they don't care about customers as much as you do obviously, and they are getting paid for not giving a ****. It amazes me that you are doing all you are for free. Develop your own camera! :)

I was just wondering how Red's HDRx works and how does it differ from Magic Lantern's HDR video? They say that there it records to tracks of video simultaneously, without time gap between properly exposed frames and what they call highlight protection. They also say that ISO and Shutter speed/or angle don't change. How does it work then?

It is DIGIC 5 but I thought it was going to have 5+. Because putting an old processor when you have a new one out seems like planned obsolescence. 7D, 60D, 5D Mark II, 550D and 600D all had the same processor. Can't wait for the FW from Canon.

That's brilliant! Now I'm glad that I went for the 650D (I only wish they put a Digic 5+ in it but alas). You guys are pure gold for the Canon community and the fact that you are doing it for free is even more fascinating. I'll definitely donate as soon as I collect a little bit of money.

Thanks very much nanomad. Sounds promising, if we could get the bitrates that GH2 got after hack that would be brilliant. But the feature that would make me the happiest camera owner in the world would be 48 fps in 1080p. Because I could film HDR in 24 fps Full HD. :) I've always wondered also if it were possible to unlock filming in resolutions higher than 1080p - Full 2k for example?
I can't tell you how much I appreciate the effort you all put into Magic Lantern software. I've spend all my money on a new camera now but as soon as I get some of it back I'll definitely donate to show my support to you guys.

Hi people of Magic Lantern,
I recently bought a 650D, as soon as it came out in fact, before the tests on the internet and everything. When I came home I was disappointed to find out that the image quality in video mode was almost the same as 550d and 600d if not exactly the same. I was expecting that there would be no line skipping because of the new processor, and that maybe image quality would be somewhat better, especially in the details. So what I want to ask is - would it be possible theoretically to disable line skipping or find any other way to fix moire issues with a firmware hack? Also, because it now has a faster processor would it be possible to enable higher bitrates and higher framerates? The last thing I wanted to ask is would clean HDMI be possible and how would it improve the image quality?
I've been a Canon user since I was a kid when I used to film with their 8mm camcorders, I've never had a camera that is not Canon. Therefore I am bitterly disappointed that Canon launched a camera in 2012 that has no image quality improvements over the 550d which was launched in early 2010, especially when pocket size cameras like Nex 5n now have better picture quality than Canon with much less moire and aliasing issues. I was not expecting that kind of neglect, arrogance, and lack of competitiveness from Canon. Since I cannot return my 650D, because I bought it in another country I am only hoping that firmware hacks can make up for this bad investment.
All the best to you guys, and thank you in advance!
