Shoot Preparation / Re: Raw video - preparation and shooting.
« on: August 30, 2013, 05:48:00 PM »
I am a little astonished that such an important topic gains that little attention, I also started over with RAW video and am unsure how to exposure right, and I believe there are many more shooters out there, no?

It seems argumentative to me following the ETTR rules to get good exposure, even more: With the new histogram with the little red, green and blue dots in it I consider this to be a good way:

Exposure everything to the right (ETTR) and even more exposure +1 EV so that the recoverable headroom of RAW will burn out in histogram but can be restored later in post. When looking at the small circles I realize that almost all the time the green channel is the first one that burns out. I ignored this one and overexposed the red and blue to ETTR +1. This was what I tried until now, but I have not that much experience to really compare different techniques.

But what do you think, is this a good way to start over?

Feature Requests / Re: [IMPOSSIBLE] Flash while taking a silent picture
« on: August 29, 2013, 04:07:26 PM »
Hopefully not annoying you too much, but I have to ask this again, because I still don´t understand why it is technically impossible to make a flash fire with silent pictures.

In the above mentioned Bolt-Trigger-Module, the camera is trying to capture flashes appearing at an unknown moment, whereas the time of the silent exposures is well known, no? Isn´t this a completely different thing?

Tanks a lot! Martin.

Forum and Website / Re: Monitoring recent development in ML, how?
« on: August 29, 2013, 03:01:16 PM »
Yes, this comes much closer, although it is very cryptic to non-coders to get a real overview. At the top is stated what I am am missing there:

"Need some help in adding links to relevant forum threads or user guide sections (edit features-html.py to add them)."

At least one could have an opportunity to look what is behind the module names. Some of the topics are already linked to threads...

Thanks a lot!

Yes, thank you very much!

But this is not really what I meant. I was thinking of a short list of the works that are in progress, without all the users questions, camera specific stuff and so on. More like an index, a table, a summary, maybe where every coders project is described shortly, with a link to a thread. As a real overview, even shorter than the menu entries of the ML tabs. Is there something like this too? Thanks a lot! Martin.

Hello, I think it would be nice if one could have an overview of all the developments all the ML gurus are working on. For me it is hard to find the important features that are in progress or may find their way into the next mayor release.

I really would like to test the the code at the bleeding edge, so I wonder if there is a list of all features that are under construction at the moment, maybe with links to the corresponding threads?

Thanks a lot! Martin

General Help Q&A / Re: Exposure Lock, I don´t get it
« on: August 29, 2013, 12:37:57 AM »
I don´t really understand the article, probably because the Google-translation from Spanish is not very good. However, I can´t believe that ISO 12800 is a pushed ISO 1600 only, is this is what is said there? Pushing a ISO1600 RAW won´t result in the same quality as a RAW shot at 12800, no?

Raw Video / How to preview RAW-Video on HD?
« on: August 28, 2013, 10:16:42 PM »
Just a short question: Is there any possibility to see the contents or at least a single thumb of a RAW video on harddisc without extracting all the single DNG-frames?

Thanks!

General Help Q&A / Re: Exposure Lock, I don´t get it
« on: August 28, 2013, 10:24:27 AM »
Thanks a lot for your answer. So it is meant to be like that. I think it would be nice to enable and disable expo lock on the fly then, it would make it more flexible. By the way, is there a way to overcome the ISO limits too? When doing stage photography I would like to make my 5D2 to go up to 12800, too.

Thanks! Martin

General Help Q&A / Exposure Lock, I don´t get it
« on: August 27, 2013, 07:09:18 PM »
Hello girls and guys, I am trying to grasp the "Expo Lock"-feature. I unterstand how the whole thing works, but I cannot find out how to dial an exposure compensation.

How do you use that? Switch it off, put all parameters to a desired exposure, then switch it on, so the exposure is locked? Okay, even though this seems quite complicated to me, what if the lighting situation changes? How do I compensate on the fly then?

Thanks alot for your help!

Jesus! Incredible stuff! You are real heroes! Okay, today I´ll try to learn some curves! :-D Thanks a lot!

Hello, I don´t understand some things happening here. I have installed the todays nightly build to have a look what has happened to ML during the last month. When stumbling upon this new ETTR-module, something that is completely new for me, but I get the idea behind it, I was wondering, if my long desired  min-max ranges for AV/TV and ISO were realized meanwhile. When googeling that, I found stated in a thread, that the module ml_auto_iso was dropped because now there is ETTR. But here I see a thread that is talking about a "real P"-mode, which, looking at the curves and so on, seems to be fantastic. And I can´t see how ETTR replaces min-max-ranges or even curves for exposure values? I see you discussed ETTR vs. "real P", but I can´t see your final conclusion.

However, this module discussed here is not implemented yet, no? What do you think, will it be linked into ML, and if so, when? Thanks a lot! Martin...

I don´t unterstand either. I need this feature too, I am looking for a fast shooting solution that can trigger flashes every frames for half a year now.

Isn´t it possible to trigger a flash at all from ML? Thanks a lot!

38
Okay, seems noone knows about it, so I will post this topic as a feature request.

39
Noone knowing nothing not at all, no?

Maybe, could some of the developers fighting at the edge of ML give me a hint? Could I build that feature into ML myself? Is it hard to do that? Is it possible to adress the PC-Sync-port from ML already?

Thanks a lot!

Martin

Hello guys!

A year ago I already asked, if it was possible to get a flash trigger signal out of my 5D for every frame while recording video. That wasn´t possible.

Now that the RAW still mode is here, do you think it will be possible to trigger my studio flashes while shooting with that new fast still mode? I need a very fast shooting mode while having single triggers for each frame. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

a.d. & pravdomil's 5D2 builds / Re: 14-Bit RAW video Builds for 5D2
« on: June 13, 2013, 05:57:48 PM »
Hello, since I suppose that the RAW silence mode is basically the same as the RAW video mode, I post a maybe slightly OT question here, please apologize. I was asking more than 4 months ago here in the forum, if it was possible to get a per-frame-flash-trigger out of my 5DII while recording movie. This seemed not to be possible. Now that there is this very fast burst mode coming into my camera I wonder if I can get my studio flashes triggered with that? I can´t test it right now. Does anyone know something about that?

Thanks! Martin...

42
Please, could anyone help me with this question? I am totally eager for knowing whether the silent mode will trigger flashes at the PC-Sync port? I´d be very happy if this was possible, since I am looking for such a thing for more than 6 months...

I don´t have any gear here, so if anyone could ease my pain by testing this, I´d appreciate this very much!

Thanks a lot!

Martin...

I still need this feature on a 5DII, 5DIII or better a Canon that shoots movie faster than 60fps, if available. After having an odyssee trying to find out how to trigger flashes at a RED EPIC camera, I return here to maybe ask for a solution? Is there any chande to get a fash trigger signal while shooting movie? I know, this is very special. But I appreciate that very much. Thanks a lot!

Maybe I should put this thread into the feature resquests?

Orgs!  :o

Hmmmmmm.... I would prefer that someone could to find my needs of a per-videoframe-signal out of the came so useful, that she/he/it implements that in a regular relase... Yes I know, noone needs such a strange feature...

Ok then, I have to dig into the development-environment of Magic Lantern. Hmhm....

Anyway, thanks a lot! Martin...

Ok, that looks good! I suppose I could have the skills to build such a photodiode/opamp circuitry. But what do I have to do to make my cam- a 5dMKII - fire an LED when shooting a video frame? Thanks a lot! Martin...

Dear g3gg0,

please, could you give me a hint to the astrophotography topic? It would be very great for me having this feature! Although I am a programmer I am unsure whether working in the inner camera software is really an option for me. I would appreciate it very much to have this thing working!

Thanks a lot! Martin...

Hello, I want to shoot video and meanwhile the recording runs shoot stills with studio flashes, but I don´t get a flash signal out of the cam while in video recording mode. While being in Liveview without recording, flash signal are delivered. Why is this and can Magic Lantern help me with it?

Thanks a lot!

Hello, I need a signal out of the cam when exposing a frame while shooting video footage. I need to use flashes for every single exposured frame. Is there any chance to catch such a signal out of the camera? Thanks! Martin...
