I just noticed a problem that I THINK it is related to Magic Lantern.. cause I read it around here but now cannot find the specific posts.

I use my 7D for filming only, hardly ever take any photos. So last friday I got a photo job.. ok, let's do it! But it looks like the autofocus works like crap!! At first it wasn't working at all.. half-pressed my shutter button and nothing, completely dead.. Tried swapping batteries, cards, removing ML, nothing.. still the same.. the lens worked ok, because I tested it on another camera earlier.. So after several tried, workarounds, taking pics in manual mode, then turning autofocus on, etc etc I managed to get it partially working.. it didnt work all the time.. every now and then I had to swap the AF-MF button on the lens.. :/

I think it is ML related because I think I read around this thread that people had 7D's with autofocus broken... truth is I am really scared about this.. if this is true I won't be able to sell the camera, or take pictures.. am I hallusinating or does this happened before? If so, is there any fix??

BTW I haven't been able to test it with another lens.. but the one that was given was good I believe!!!

Thank you very much to all, I love ML and hope there's a way out to this!!!!
Cheers!

I did my first RAW tests with my 7D over the weekend and let me tell you as a Former Red One Owner, the 7D sensor is miles ahead of the original Red M Sensor.  I shot using the 2.35:1 - 1472x626 (which is slightly more total pixels than traditional 720p).  It blew my mind.

I rendered out these images from AE CS6 to CineForm 444 1080p24 avi's and compared to similarly transcoded Red files.  Here's the Truth:  The Canon 7D footage is deeper, richer and definitely more Film-like than the Red One (and I don't say this lightly: I'm one of those guys that shot in 65mm Super Panavision and did own the Red).  In the end, the Red One is too bulky, gets WAY TOO HOT and the RAW images are just way too...RAW (takes too long to grade a Red Image).  And with Magic Lantern RAW for the 7D, the Red is WAY TOO EXPENSIVE.  I can't believe how little tweaking the 7D RAW footage needed to look so....RICH!

Magic Lantern is really doing something truly special here.  My hat's off to all involved.  This really does change the game.  These great software guru's have proved to me that at this level Bit depth becomes truly more relevant than pixels.

Man, I wish I could write code!  I know the 7D is a struggle because of it's hardware architecture, but let's hope the ML folks stay at it!  It's definitely worth it!

BTW, I use the VAF filter on my 7D and there's ZERO ALIASING.  Get a VAF filter and forget about it.  You won't regret it.  It's a wondrous optical device.

Wow, it's so great to read this from someone with your background!! Can't imagine what you'll think about the 5D3 then, hehe.

I'm interested in knowing about the Cineform 444.. it must be the equivalent to ProRes 444 right?? I'd like to know how much disk space have you saved with the convertion and how much quality did you loose (if any).. does it convert the 14bit to 10bit or something???

Regarding the VAF filter.. I'm impressed.. all the tests I've seen are like the original footage (withour vaf) but ALL blurred out, I mean, the lines the sensor skipped are still not there.. they just blur everything.. there are NO vibrations of course but the details are lost anyway...

Again, would love to see some test footage of yours :)

Thank you very much! Have a good day!!!

Nice!! Was it shot at 2.5k?

I have a question.. WHY do we have a lot of alisasing and moire on 7D, same as 5D2 and others... I mean, the 7D when shooting H264 does NOT have that HUGE amount of moire.. it just has a tiny biy, which makes it completely usable!! But the raw.. it just makes the footage not usable at all if you do a wide-shot..

I'm thinking.. if it makes the same extact line-skipping to get to 1920x1080 as the H264 does... then, why?? And, it could be possible to fix it right??

Thanks!!

I have a small problem with MagicZoom window.
When I use x10 and back at normal view , magic zoom window don't hide.
What the problem?

Exactly, me too. I gotta change to photo mode back and forth to make liveview visible again. I think it was mentioned before! Also, it has happened that when I hit record the liveview freezes. I know there's an option to do that.. it was set to Auto, maybe ML decided to set that option on.

Will be converting my footage soon, using a 166x card, and getting 135 frames in 2.35:1 and 109 I think on 16:9, maximum res available of course. I think the first video I recorded was corrupted... will see!

THANK YOU SO F*** MUCH PELICAN!!!! :D

First off, I wanted to express my sincere gratitude to all the developers over at Magic Lantern for their hard work.   You all are doing some seriously awesome and amazing work!

Next, I wanted to ask if there is anything a moderately tech savvy non-coder can do at this juncture to help out the developers in making their way to the next full build for the 7d, including raw video recording?  From reading through the forums, it seems that right now what is left to be figured out is a way to enable fps override so as to enable continuous raw video recording on the 7d.    I'm unclear about what the process entails, but if there is some monkey work type tasks that can be given to the enthusiastic community at large by the developers, I know that I for one would step up (assuming of course that the job of explaining what would need to be done to laymen would be simpler/more efficient than doing the actual task )

In any case, holding my breath and super excited about the potential of my lowly little 7d becoming a raw video beast!

Thanks again.

Joe :)

I was gonna suggest the same thing. I want the 7D to be as full as possible, and I am SO excited!!! Not a programmer but I am very nerd indeed!! Would love to help Pelican so much, so if there is any "monkey work" that can be done, like finding stuff through the code or something, I don't know, ANYTHING! will be willing to do it!!!!! Also would love to implement some audio features like headphones monitoring.. and stuff like that... Is it really hard to learn how to program this?? I have a tiny background on programming.. so I understand quite a bit.. but I feel this is dangerous!!

Thanks!!

Just out of curiosity, what kind/speed of CF card are you using? I seem to be getting dropped/pink frames every time I try to shoot. I'm using a 600X Duracell card. I would have thought it was fast enough, but because of the odd frame issues, I'm assuming it's not.

I wanted to add that I don't get any pink frames nor corrupted ones.. and I'm using Trancend's 166x, 16gb and 32gb.. so I am not sure if it's a speed problem!! :/

I wanted to know if it's possible to port the headphones function?? Also, what is necessary to port the remaining of ML functions to the 7D? Are there certain limitations? I don't understand about programming.. about the work that Pelican is doing.. what are 'stubs' for example??

Thanks!!

I'm noticing a grid pattern in my DNGs...  Anybody else noticing this?

Yes me too.. will try and upload some pictures when I get the time!
#287
Yes you are right in your math!! But, if you hit the magnifying glass ONCE, you get into 5X... that FULL 1:1 crop mode? I mean there is NO line skipping? If there is NO line skipping then you are right, but if there is some, then we're talking about a bigger sensor in that crop mode :D.

Downloading the full res video now!!! Simply cannot believe the quality that we are getting.. will try and test myself but got crappy cards.. 166x... :/

Cheers!

How did you enable crop video? Is another module required? Can you give a more in depth description to the video you shot? What is the framerate? How is it possible to record more frames than the usual 41 in silent pic burst mode at an even higher resolution? Please share those infos :)

I think you have to zoom in 5X and then do the burst.. that's how you get in crop mode if I'm not mistaken..

I wonder what crop factor would that be in the 7D...

Excuse me! Is this DIY project useful for this?

http://www.davidhunt.ie/?p=2641

It's basically a raspberry pi which communicates with the camera via USB.. and can download the material on realtime to a hard drive.. I don't know if the USB speeds are that high.. but I think it's an interesting project.. the author managed to do lots of stuff with it.. maybe even could open a wide range of possibilites for magic lantern! (i'm just wondering lol)..

Thanks for the nightly build!!

One question.. as the new 7D firmware said it accepted UDMA 7 cards.. BUT it will treat it as UDMA 6... which CF card should I buy?? The 1000x or the 600x? It was never enough clear to me what they were doing with the speeds...

Thanks!

How can we start helping into developing Raw Video?

I did some silly tests with silent pics burst but will do a more serious one.. For now I did not get any pink frames.. but only 2 to 3 seconds of video.. I noticed some green "aberrations" on some borders of objects, I saw that this had happened in the development of raw video.

So, how can we get at the same level of development as other cameras? What do we need? Testers we have, do we have a dev? Someone to program??

If the code is already done, isn't just a matter of changing a few values to address the proper "properties" of the 7D? Asking from my complete ignorance..

Would love to help by testing, tell me how please!! :)

Cheers!

BTW: I have only 133x Transcend CF cards... (will buy the KB in the future.. 1000x or 600x given that is the 7D?)

Haha yes! I read that after I replied.. me as a user would love to contribute by testing of course..

What I meant to say is at which stage is this AWESOME breakthrough? Is it at the same level of other cameras or is it just bursting silent pics? I'm asking 'cause I don't know how to compile it myself! (though it may be easy if I put my mind to it! ;) )

Thanksssss!!!!! If you're confident, then I'm confident! :)

If you look at DxO dynamic range numbers, you will notice there's no point in going above ISO 1600 on 7D. I've left the higher ISOs so you can experiment, but that doesn't mean you should use the extreme settings.

The 5 EV difference means the highest analog ISO is 3200, which confirms this: http://www.guillermoluijk.com/article/isos5dmkii/index.htm

BTW, got something cool for you: https://bitbucket.org/hudson/magic-lantern/commits/c2a01891156e

From now on, it's your job to get it fully working.

WHHAAAT WHAT WHAT WHAAATTTT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OMG I'm about to literally cry!!!!! The gods must have listened cause I was browsing for used 5D's.... and of course the gods have the names of ALL the ML Dev team!!!!

Alex, does this actually means that it's *very* possible for this to happen?? :)

Thats really Great news for 7d, i,m hungry to  use the new interface in the  latest build, but without  the
autoboot, can i use the new build without autoboot ? Isn't that than cause frezze camera?

Is the auto micro adjust implented?

I think the errors are only due to the Dual Iso function.. myself haven't had a chance to test it fully.. but as I'm not using that I believe I'm not going to have errors...

I'd settle for output only.  :-)

Hey anotherdave! Maybe there's a simpler and smarter solution! There are LOADS of android / iphone apps which control the camera, so: Why not connect it through usb and the phone would act as a TC generator, allowing via the headphone jack to give TC Signal to whatever devices you want? (by using miniplug splitters of course..) I mean if there are already apps for that it means that it has been done already, and comunicating with the camera also, the pieces are there!! We just need one big smart guy to put them together ;) haha

Cheers!
