General Help Q&A / Re: ML for landscape photography.
April 30, 2014, 07:06:27 AM
If you are interested in the A7r for its megapixel count it is something ML can most certainly not provide you with, other then that ML offers tons of features for photography; also for landscapes specifically: advanced bracketing, bulb timer, dual ISO, RAW histogram, auto ETTR just to name a few, to my knowledge the A7r can do non of those things...

General Help Q&A / Re: Mark II ML questions
April 30, 2014, 06:13:09 AM
Just to shed a little light here, you actually CAN use autofocus in life view by pressing the auto focus button and it will start hunting for focus while you keep it pressed, it just won't be coninuous autofocus in video or live view mode thus pretty useless and probably not what you meant when you asked for autofocus in the first place...

General Chat / Re: New desktop for editing RAW

If it makes a difference, i also have an iPhone.  :)
Great, this way you can chat with your friends while you wait for your iMac to render...
Jokes aside, nowadays the platform has a little less influence, although I still feel there are more Windows scripts and hacks when it comes to handling ML RAW, but the bottom line is performance to price ratio and optional upgrades (that's pretty easy and straight forward to figure out)
in the end of the day there is no machine out there that is too powerful to handle ML RAW yet thus get what gives you the biggest bang for the buck!   2K GBP may seem like a lot but it won't get you one of those fancy new Mac Pros thus you may just wanna max out a PC to make the most of it!

Stu Maschwitz has some pretty interesting color grading tutorials out there (not for RAW specifically but about the 'cinema look') although it is not only about color, focal length, aperture, glass, DR, texture, camera movement, shutterspeed all play a substantial part of it. Looking at your sample I'd look into cooling the shadows with Tiel, warming highlights with Amber and use scopes to hit the right skin tones, that is mostly what people call the 'Blockbuster look', and it has been abused extremely as of lately...

Duplicate Questions / Re: Raw files speedup videos!

Export to an intraframe codec from After effects (cineform, dnxhd, legarith) and to h.264 out of vegas, 50 mbs is way more then you'll need, your HD video should also look good at 10 mbs, if it doesn't there might be other reasons...

Raw Video / Re: Choppy video on 5d mk11

I think Premiere mostly still does a terrible job interpreting stills sequences and time-remapping, I grade (or convert to log) in After effects and render to an intraframe codec to edit in premiere, it is an extra step and potential minor loss of quality but so much more pleasant to edit.

If you are not a MAC user how do you intend to move to finalcut? I moved from vegas to premiere (creative suite) a few years ago and have never looked back, one of the most annoyingly confusing things about vegas I remember being the export settings, but as a general rule you do not need to convert to mpeg_streamclip that is from a long time ago when most nle editors had a hard time with h.264, unless you running a very old version of vegas it should handle the native footage.
If you wont to squeeze every bit of latitude in the footage or if you shot in some sort of lo-style picture profile yuo can denoise the clip in after effects (denoiser II, neat video, dark energy), set the bit depth to 16bit and export to an intraframe codec like DNXHD, Cineform, Legarith, etc... this will give you a bit more flexibilty grading and your NLE editor will handle the footage with more ease (effects will render faster or in real time) but all this has nothing to do with the NLE platform you choose (Vegas, FCP, PP...)

Great colors, very tasty looking! What lens did you use for this?

The industry has changed. Today's fast-track keywords are crowd funding, social media and transparency. High quality digital acquisition is accessible to the masses, simply lying about your acquisition method to sound cool won't get you anywhere, the look, feel and story are all there is to it.

Thanks PressureFM, well taken! And thanks for counting them  :o I kinda go by feeling there but I am aware I might be overdoing it... often I start out going all in one direction or the other and after I change my mind and time reverse them to have them go the other way around; but the simple fact that you noticed it means I may not have gotten it right on this one; thanks again in any case!

Raw Video Postprocessing / Re: Easy way to upscale?
April 12, 2014, 07:51:42 AM
Detail preserving upscale in AE CC does a pretty good job although the difference to a regular upscale is barely noticeable

Thanks evanbuzzell! On the 5DII I shot the HDR RAW sequence at 30fps, then import to ACR, eliminate the first few frames as they often are not alternating ISOs, then duplicate the comp, pick the first one and time stretch it by 50 to eliminate every other frame leaving only one kind of exposure and then stretch them out again with twixtor, then I offset the other track by one frame, trim the comp by one frame and repeat the hole procedure with time stretching and twixtor. Once that is done you need to move one track forward by one frame again to make sure both are in synch and render them out as TIFF sequences. I batch process this into HDR using SNS-HDR because after trying many different workflows this has given me the most consistent and fine-tuned results but other HDR - fusion techniques may work too.

This workflow is extremely slow, especially because SNS-HDR is quite render intensive, but other workflows including ginger HDR,  photomoatix, etc... had either more image artifact issues or flickering, or simply wouldn't squeeze as much dynamic range with sufficient contrast for most clips.

Sure I completely understand, just noticed it now and didn't seem to have it before and wanted to find out if it is a change in general forum rules or something that is particular to my account.

Under 'share your videos' and also this particular post, I can not recall ever needing approval before on any of those boards, thats why I was wandering if I maybe had broken some rules that put my 'status' in jeopardy...  Also I randomly keep getting these 522 errors when loading the page, not sure if it is something on my end, maybe slow internet?

Dear ML moderator team,

I haven't been as active in the forum lately as I maybe would have liked to be but today something caught my eye; my posts all of a sudden require moderator approval! Is this something you have applied for the entire forum or have I done something to invoke this? Not that this would make a huge difference to me but it is not as much fun when you're uncertain of when your post will go live... also, and I may have to warn you that this may bee a noob question; I can't see a way of getting email  notifications on post replies, meaning that not only will I have to be checking periodically if my post is life but also if someone replies. I understand this may give you some extra traffic but it is quite annoying, in any case thanks for you consideration!  That aside you seem to have an issue with your cloudflare set up, the forum is constantly down on this end...

Dear fellow Magic Lantern users,

Here is our latest video shot with the 5D2 in RAW, some HDR RAW video, and some timelapse from both the 5D2 and 600D, even some HDR timelapse in there too! As usual non of this would have been possible without ML therefore big thanks to all the devs! Would love to hear you comments here or on our website at the related blog post: http://africashot.com/video-production-in-kenya/ thanks!

Amazing work!

I also noticed when dropping the files onto raw2cdng it prompts a warning saying the file is corrupt and unreadable and I should run chkdsk utility, what utility is that? thanks again
#69
Thanks, I tried raw2cdng but it wouldn't work, now trying magic ISO since I am on Windows, will update on results

Couldn't find anyone else talking about this in the forum; have some RAW files from an older nightly build and they seem to be so currupt I can't even copy them to my hard drive let alone decode them  in raw2dng, there are only three files but rather relevant to the story and all 1 - 2 gb, is there anyway look into their code and to 'fix' them? (I guess uploading helps but my internet here is very limited thus this far I am looking for ways to fix this without uploading the entire files)

Hm, never even considered this could work with RAW, it would certainly be awesome if there was a way to make it work!

At least it looks like ACR is heading in the right direction!

Hi Valentino,

Thanks for posting, although I didn't have the time to watch your 20 minute+ video I must say I have trouble understanding why you would post this in the first place, you are critiquing a video posted by reedercity well over half a year ago at the beginning of the RAW development and it is clearly a test video; what's the point? Check out the reedercity's profile and you'll see he has posted several hundreds of posts since making all this helping out completely obsolete; in any case I'd say you have posted this in the wrong place as it has llittle to do with the video I had opened this comment thread with. In any case thanks for your efforts.

Absolutely agree, have stopped using 1880 ages ago and never regretted it, no difference whatsoever.

I have been fiddeling with this a bit further; since updating to 4.4.2 the system on the nexus seems to at least connect to the tablet each time and also reconnect when it crashes without needing to reboot.
By now I am pretty convinced the weak point of this all is the cable connection starting with the Nexus 7 plug, the slightest wiggle  will break up the connection, this is why I'd be interested if this workaround offers a viable solution: http://nofilmschool.com/2014/01/dirt-cheap-wireless-monitor-hacked-tp-link-mr3040-router-will-help/
Anyone here who has tried it?
