The experimental build that you need is called:

crop_rec_4k_mlv_snd_isogain_1x3_presets_2019Dec12.5D3113

and you can download it from here:

https://bitbucket.org/Dannephoto/magic-lantern/downloads/

I can confirm that it works very well with all compressed modes and is quite stable too.  Please give it a test and see how it works for you.  Personally, I like to use 12-bit lossless.  The difference to 14-bit lossless is negligible and barely perceptible but it will save you even more card and disk space.

I will test it this weekend !
Thank-you all so much for your advises.

this is time and the opportunity to change my old firmware version, especially if I gain fluidity and disk space !

Thank you again so much.

Good stuff as alway, Francis.

But you should look in to Lossless 14 bit, you effectively double the amount you can record to your cards, with 100% same quality(lossless). Also increases file transfer 2x, post-production works with about half of the bandwith, meaning almost doubled performance in NLE and Grading programs.

If you feel unsure about it, buy a 2nd 5d3 and install it for testing and to get a hang of the lossless 14 bit post process as the Legacy converters won't work with. But there is mlv app and Danne's Batch converter. Both are superb.

Thank you very much !

Could you advise me on a link to download this lossless 14 bit firmware version ?
I got the 1.1.3 canon firmware => is it compatible with Lossless 14bits ?

You mean that I wont be able to encode the DNGs with  Batch_MLV if I use a lossless 14 bit ?

Superb! What build is it? Care too share??
And what lenses did u use?

I haven't changed firmware version since 2015 or 2016 maybe... I'm sorry, no secret.....just I dont remember. It works without any problems ... so why changing?

I use Canon lenses :

  • Canon 100mm f:2.8 Macro USM
    Canon 85mm f:1.8 USM
    Canon 50mm f:1.4 USM
    Canon 35mm f:2 USM
    Canon 24mm f:1.8 USM

At 1:36  I use Dog Schidt Optiks lenses, Falre Factory oval Aperture.

Very nice.
What lens did you use in the 1m36s scene (woman in red dress passes through guy with white tshirt)? It has a very cool bokeh, just like anamorphic, but there's no anamorphic distortion. I also like the shadows being green, gives this Fujifilm-look from Matrix.
Good job.

At 1:36 I use Dog Schidt Optiks lenses, made by Richard Gale (UK).
Flare Factory is built from optical components of HELIOS 44/2 Russian lenses.

I bought them in 2014 this guy was just beginning building crazy lenses.
My kit of Lenses have been made specifically for me (in 2014 it was still possible). Today his lenses cost so much
My kit has an oval aperture x2 at T2.8.
I got a 38mm, a 58mm and a 88mm T2.8 oval aperture.
These lenses are not being manufactured any more.

Here is new (actual) Lenses :

Yes 1080. I use a very old version. But it works fine, without a bug from years now.

I have tried several versions (4k) but the one I have worked so well that I have not changed.

Then she thinks of her husband, of his mother ... everyone fuck her tonight ... she is exhausted.
No one is in the car, outside of her....

That was incredible! Your work is always by far among the best cinematic stuff I have seen using Magic Lantern! What was your recording resolution? Did you use the crop_rec module at all?

Thank's so much !

Recording resolution =>  FullHD 1920x1080
Did you use the crop_rec module =>  No. For what reason ? I've never use it (just for tests).

I never re-frame a shoot, then, no reason to shoot in high resolution...
I upscale the Full HD final Master in 2K to make a DCP at the end of my workflow, wich is a very smal Upsale. The image texture is very nice in a big movie theater screen, quiet "cinematic" in fact.
Framing is so crucial to even think shooting in 4k to re-frame in post.

Sometimes, I zoom a bit in post to simulate a smooth traveling. I know I can zoom 15% and max 20% in a FHD image, without any big visible impact in the image. This is the only "trick" I do in post, concerning the frame (and add a 2:39 letter box !!)

Thank you very much for your comment !

Here is a short movie in my series =>  Sequences without consequence...
Title :  I come home empty...

https://vimeo.com/364067783

Camera : Canon 5D MarkIII

3 Canon lenses

  • Canon 35mm f:2 USM
    Canon 50mm f:1.4
    Canon 85mm f:1.8

    4 Compact Flash Komputer Bay 128Go 1066x

Light : 3 Led Panels :

Two Yongnuo YN-600L II 5500k just in front véhicule throught a diffusion châssis de diffusion at 50cm from the light sources at 4 mètres from the car.
One YONGNUO YN600 RGB on the side of the car to create a color light border on the back side of actors

Workflow / Steps / softwares :

  • Batch_MLV => MLV Development in .DNG
Resolve15 => Audio Synchro sound engineer with  (bad) camera Mic
    Resolve15 => DNxHD 10 bits Proxies
Vegas Pro17 => Editing (with Proxies)
Vegas Pro17 => AAF Protools export to create the final audio Mix
Vegas Pro17 => Export final editing in XML to Resolve15
Protools => final mix export wave 48Hz -24bits stereo to Resolve
Resolve15 => Final color grading (DNG)+ add the final mix Wave file
Resolve15 => Export the master in DNxHD 444+ ProRes 444 (for archive) and H264 ( for Vimeo / youtube)
    Resolve15 => Export 2K Master in DCI 24p ratio 2:39
DCP o Matic => DCP DCI 24p stereo

Conclusion :

  • 95% of the "image Look" is made in set with light, 5% only in Resolve
No LUT used, just custom classic tools from Resolve15 (nodes / curves / color mask / noise reduction / tracking mask/ color weels...
To be precise, one input LUT to convert BM DNG colorspace in Rec-709.

Quote from: Tyronetheterrible on June 18, 2019, 05:46:38 PMI absolutely love the look 18 seconds in. Did you use a particular LUT for that?

No, no LUTs.... much of the work is lighting on set.
I use lights and gels to "print" my intentions on the sensor of my Canon 5D. In post-production, in Resole  I just "finish" the work...

You got a MEAN dead pixel that was kind of distracting at the bottom left of the image, but man that was amazing! Nice shots and nice subjects!
I like your use of lens choices! especially for the bathtub shots!
Did you use Davinci Resolve? After Effects?

I use Davinci Resolve.

Youre right => Lots of dead pixels, some bigger than others !
=> but....dont care. I'm use to shoot film and love defaults, scratches...

I add Film grain to "break" or "hide" the digital look...

I dont like the image, whatever the arguments of the author ...
The image is too overexposed and the color grading  really exaggerated, which gives an artificial rendering.
A grading like that could be very interesting for narrative reasons, in a movie, or a short... But in this case....no at all, I'm sorry.

Why using RAW to overexposed like that ? Use h264, and overexpose your shooting on set, with 264 it will be easy to overexpose without having to play with Color grading on post !!

In addition the 85mm is a focal lens not suitable for guimbal, it is a long focal length, the framing is rarely interesting due to this focal lenght.
This 85mm is a great lens, but not on a Guimbal. If you use it on a Ronin, try to find narrative reason...in this case only it could be interesting !

QuoteDamn, nice color grading. The scene at 0:22 seems like Alexa (the flat highlights). Do you care to share your workflow for this specific scene? Really liked it.

I did, a few years ago a Tutorial to explain my Workflow, I effectly use ALEXA LUTs (in French) :

Only the sequence of the girl with blue helmet (00:37 and 01:54) and in the snow 02:08 and 02:42
But I did the grading on Resolve.

The sequences 00:57 / 01:07 / 01:08 / 01:21/ are "classic" H264 (no RAW).

Thank's.
at 1:40  = Well seen !

This shot was the best and only one "very good" for the actress acting, but slightly out of focus....

Well seen cause this sequence is very short in the demo ! Ha ha ha !
