Camera-specific Development / Re: Canon 50D
November 12, 2015, 08:10:18 PM
Hey all, been a while since I posted on here. I used to do RAW video on my 50D and even used it to shoot a 30min short film, but I got an A7s Nov 2014 and never looked back. My 50D is still in great shape and I have 4 KompuerBay CF cards (all 64gb, 2 of them are 1000x and 2 are 1066x). If anyone is thinking about picking one up or needs some spare cards email me with an offer at:

Thanks!

Based on my tests b/w my 50D and 60D (same resolutions as 7D but shorter recording time), the difference in resolution is negligible when looking at it at 300%.

Any chance to ever get this working in Raw video mode for the 50D and 5D2?

Hey guys, so I shoot on a 50D and a wondering how stable the 7D is - Im going to test my 50D vs my 60D for noticeable resolution differences and if I prefer the 60D I may wanna grab a 7D (based on initial tests the differences seem very minimal). But if it's not gonna be stable I may as well stay with the 50D which is pretty stable.

So yeah, how stable would you say? Is FPS override working yet? Random stops? Pink frames or weird lines? Color shifts or random errors that ruin files and make you have to do footer edits?

And lastly, does Dual ISO work for video (it doesnt on the 50D yet and this is killing me altho I can always do 10s clips on the 60D :/ )

Thanks for the reply, how weird that it would be different than on a 60D, etc. I guess I can always do short shots with 13+ DR on that >_< lol

So does dual ISO only work on the 5D3 for video? It's greyed out for me on the 50D in video mode :/

I can't get dual iso to run in video mode for the life of me, but i can see the lines in RAW photos >_< help!

Edit: I was able to enable it on my 60D

the 15xx frame size is the full width of the sensor, it's not a crop.

Hey guys so a couple questions.

(1) How do I shoot at ISO 6400 or 12800? I set ISO to 6400 in camera and it says 6400 but it looks the same in-camera. RawMagic sees it as ISO 6400 in the metadata (.MLV) but then in Resolve it still looks the same as a clip shot in ISO 3200. And 12800 doesnt register in-camera. It does if I turn exposure override off but then the camera also does a bunch of crazy stuff.

(2) How well does Dual ISO work on the 50D and how would I go about processing the files on a Mac?

I love my 50D and use it for RAW video over my 60D and T2i (and EOS M), but the BMPCC just dropped to $495 and if I didn't have a 50D and 4 CF cards already I would probably have spent the money on that (heck I still might!). Something to consider.

You should change your fps setting to Exact

Great test! I bought a 50D for RAW video and while it looks very similar in image quality to the 5Dmk2 (i coulnt tell them apart when cut together), the moire and line skipping do make a difference when comparing it to the 5Dmk3. While not as huge as the leap from h264 to RAW video, I think I still want a Mark3 after watching this video >_<

Thanks for the comparison!

The 50D does close to 1600 x 900 and it upscales really well. The 7D does a bit higher resolution but it doesn't seem as stable, although I've been debating getting one if the resolution makes any noticeable difference in quality.

Raw Video / Re: Raw Video: 50D vs 7D

Hmm I'm in a similar boat. I'm considering getting a 7D and I own a 50D, but so far I haven't gotten a definitive answer saying the 7D's RAW footage is in any way superior to the 50D (mostly figured it may be sharper), and it seems to not be as stable.

The 128gb 1050x works great for me. I can easily get continuous 1:1 no crop or 1920*800 and can record 1920*1080 for 1200 frames (50 seconds). Here is the benchmark, bear in mind the cards benefit a lot from being warmed up first.

Cool, thanks! I ended up getting (2) 64GB 1066x to complement my (2) 64GB 1000x cards. Gonna use the 1066x on a Mk3 today for a short film (and the 50D with the 1000x). :D

I did some further testing and it appears that the 64gb 1066x is way more reliable then the 1000x!

I am using:
5d3, 1920x1080 25fps MLV+sound WITH HDMI viewfinder connected! GD off

1066x 64gb
does continously record 25fps without ever skipping frames/stopping!!
It never stopped yet!

1000x 64gb
does record 25fps continously, however it stops every now and then. You never know when and if.

1066 128GB
this one can actually record 25fps 1080p, but 50% change it will stop by skipping a frame. This can happen after a few sec or after 12 minutues or so. you never know...

This is exactly the comparison I wanted to see, as 64gb seems to perform better than 128gb at any speed, and 256gb is out of the director's budget for the film I'm DP-ing. I have two 64gb 1000X that work pretty well on my 50D, but we need to grab two more cards for the 5Dmk3 we'll also be shooting on, and 1066x seems to be, based on your test, the best bet for consistent 5D3 performance. Plus, at the end of the day I'll get to keep them and use them on my 50D (and maybe a 5D3 in the future). :)

Thanks for your testing!

Has anyone tried out the new Komputerbay 1050x and 1066x cards and are they any better for the 50D? Or are we still se ton the 1000x as the best?

I get similar performance drops with MLV, but the benefit for the 50D would be the WB metadata if you know you're nailing it in-camera, so you can skip the WB settings in post.

Yeah, yesterday was my first time shooting in MLV and in multiple instances I wanted to just switch back to RAW, but because I need to batch export so many clips with varying WBs I just dealt with the random skipped frames and freezes. :/

Hey guys, so I'm trying to make the jump to MLV to save myself having to adjust WB on each clip like in RAW, but I found that the "fix black level" option does nothing but create pink DNGs that even ACR has trouble reading properly. It seems like a dangerous design flaw to have that option automatically be enabled in mlv_rec. Can we make it harder to reach or simply remove it? I'm hesitant to use MLV now because I'm scared I'll accidentally turn it on or maybe after a bad reboot the camera will turn it on, and unlike some bad settings that can be easily dealt with, gross pink DNGs even in ACR doesn't seem like an easy fix. Thanks.

For photography? The 60D seems to have a huge buffer, but the 50D shoots a bit faster (and you're looking at about 600 used vs 300 used - I got mine from a photographer I work with for $200 :3 ).

Has anyone else noticed that the max resolution has dropped from 1584 to 1568 wide? I guess this isn't a huge deal, but what gives?

Also, the latest nightly I downloaded doesn't seem to have mlv_play on it :(

Hey y'all been a while since i checked up on EOM M TL. Quick question is RAW still squished in non-crop mode?

What's the difference b/w Magic and Tragic Lantern on the 50D?

I shot this https://vimeo.com/85953508

with the v2.3.NEXT.2014Jan28.50D109 Build. Am I better off using TL?

My card started acting up once I got 58GB used up on a 64GB KomputerBay 1000x card. Also white balance may not be registering in the RAWs I have to manually set it in ACR from 4800K. Also I have no idea how raw histogram works it looks the same as regular histograms to me :(
