Camera-specific Development / Re: Canon 1100D / T3
September 18, 2019, 10:17:20 PM
Hi,

So something strange has happened to my footage. For some reason some of the videos have been recorded without the sound, which I thought was going to be awkward to match up with my external sound recording but not the end of the world. Thing is though, when I load the footage into premiere with my two clips of seperately recorded external sound, and match everything up with the clap I make at the begining of each shot, the two sound files match up and the but the video quickly finds itself out of synch! Really don't understand what could have happened! I've tried fucking about with the audio and video and using other anchor points to match them up but they always end up out of synch again. Anyone got any ideas what's happened?

I was using my 1100D with whatever the latest version of ML was in february - april this year...

thanks

EDIT 3.35pm: I've just checked another bit of footage that was taken the same day with no change in the settings but this time the camera's own audio was recorded also but even that is out of synch with the video! I just don't understand how this is possible and if I can fix it.

Hey, sorry to highjack this post, if I should be creating a new one just let me know and I'll do that but this is a very interesting topic: why the hell do dslr only record for 30min ish???

2 hours of continous recording would be a god send for what I am trying to do. We record some very emotional interviews that sometimes run over 1 hour long and usually can't be stopped mid flow so always miss something when the recording stops. Also it's a pain in the arse matching up the sound with video that i've not got a clap in.

Currently using an eos 1100d and looking at getting a second camera. would be great to be able to leave the 1100d running and just be able to forget about it while I get some more arty shots with the new camera.

anyone know how to manage this feat with DSLR? even 1 hour continuous would be great for me...

Hi!

I've been using ML for a few months, to record interviews I publish online. So far so good, it has given me loads of control in video settings where the 1100D's firmware gives you next to none. One thing canon does give you the option to do is record only video not sound, not sure why you'd want to do that as sound can be removed later and weighs almost nothing, and so have never tweaked that option.

Sometimes though, an ML box pops up when I'm filming warning me that "sound recording is turned off". I didn't worry about it too much since I thought I could match up my external sound by eye although it is tedious. However, now that I am trying to edit all this footage, I'm finding that all the videos which recorded without the sound are slowed down to be completely out of sync with the external sound recording. I usually use two external mics and they sync up fine with each other so I'm pretty sure the issue is with the video.

I sometimes use the ML card when I'm going to have the time to play about with the settings but if it's the interview requires me to be quick, I just use one of the cards that doesn't have ML on it. So far it seems that the problem has only occured when I've been using the non ML card but not every time. Using the software MediaInfo, I've found that both the files with sound and without sound are in constant 25fps, which suggests that I was using the non ML card (with ML I film in 23.976 fps).

- does anyone understand what might have happened?
- does anyone have a fix for bringing my dodgy videos into sync with the audio?
- what shouldn't I do in future to always have my reference audio (and normal unwarped video)?

Any help greatly appreciated!

EDIT: I appear to have been mistakenly using the ML card for at least some of the footage I'm having problems with. So I'm guessing now that I have accidentally toggled some ML setting which cuts the sound and slows the video. Could this be RAW filming? In my research before writing this post I found some stuff that suggested that RAW filming doesn't record sound, I have no idea about RAW filming and don't even know if it's an option with ML on the 1100D, I certainly couldn't find that option in the menu. Hopefully this new clue will help some of you out there help me! thanks in advance!

Hey all,

thanks for quick replies, I'm in the land of powercuts just now (honduras) so not able to log on often.

Yeah, obvs the 5D iii is the beast but with a price to go with it, I am tempted to wait and gather more cash to get the mark iii or iv but that could be a while and might be out of my league just now in terms of my ability to make the most of what it offers.

I haven't been shooting in RAW so far, and not sure if it's something I'd need at this point. More important to me would be the ability to shoot for longer that 20 or 30 minutes at a time (=continuous shooting???) as I'm loathe to interupt the flow of an interview which can last up to 2 hours or more, but hate to miss anything too.

Hadn't considered the 50D, that definitely looks like a great option. I seem to be missing something though. It seems awful cheap for all it's specs. What have I missed? what are it's drawbacks? how does it compare to the 80D out of the box? thishttps://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=17360.525thread makes me feel that ML for the 80D is not too far away either.

Also, I have no experience whatsoever with autofocus. It strikes me as something that is great in theory but isn't likely to work well in practice. Can dual pixel autofocus be trusted to work well or is there something else I should be looking for? And how well would that option work if I was working with a shallow depth of field (really want to get that pro interview look).

thanks

Hey all!

First off apologies if this is a thread many times trod, but I couldn't find quite the answers i was looking for.

I am an amateur documentary maker and have been using my old canon 1100d (= rebel t3? I think) to do interviews. ML has unlocked some cool features for me on it (w/o ML the 1100d only shoots video in automatic) but I think I'm ready for an upgrade / second camera.

I've got about $1000 to spend and was looking at the 80d since I have two lenses for my 1100d both of which would fit it. Also it's within budget, has been touted as a great model in terms of what ML can unlock and it meets some of the stuff I want from a new camera.

Requirements are:
Min 60fps
Great image quality
Good focus in low light
Full frame would be great for shallow depth of field as i'll mostly be doing interviews - the effect I want to achieve is focused subject with blurry background.

Budget isn't set in stone it's just what I've got at the moment if the perfect camera is more than that I could wait and try to gather more cash.

Anyway any advice is very welcome, especially if you make documentaries / interviews. Which model do you prefer? Also what features have I not mentioned and I don't even know I want?

Cheers

Hey

I'm new here so apologies if I'm posting on the wrong thread but i have a question specific to canon 1100d.

On page 52 of this forum someone suggested that it might be possible to rewire your camera to be able to take a mic...

I Just bought rodé videomic go thinking it could connect to my canon 1100d (it does have  something that looks a lot like a 3.5 input) but when cable wouldn't go in input i looked it up and found that that model  doesnt take external mic... Bit of a bugger as i'm travelling and it was a mission  to get the microphone in the first place...

Has anyone managed to hack their camera's hardware to allow it to take a mic?

Cheers
